I seem to enjoy playing old DOS games on my Windows 3.1 Compaq way too much. My NES gets more playing time than my ps2, and when I play ps2 it's usually Activision Anthology or Intellivision Lives.

Like, I have a shitload of newer games laying around but I just can't get enough of the simplicity of older games. It's hard to explain but I really don't think that "video games" are supposed to be realistic. I picture crude graphics and simple gameplay and the "up down left right A B" kind of gameplay is how games are supposed to be.

Anyone else as nuts as I am?

Check out some of the rogue-likes out there. Pure quality in those. I'd recommend starting off with one simpler, than working your way up.

In order from least to most complex:

DOOMRL- It's classic DOOM, in rogue-like form. Simplest interface, and just the classic enemies and weapons, so you aren't overwhelmed by a chainsaw, a steel chainsaw, a orcanum chainsaw of disembowelment +4. You'll probably die a few times in the second or third level before you really get the hang of things. The graphics are classic rogue-like ascii, but it does have DOOM sound.

IVAN- IVAN (Iter Vehemens ad Necem) is an acronym for latin words basically meaning "A violent road to death". It's a pretty accurate assessment of the game. IVAN takes all of the best parts of rogue-likes, and throws it at you in one game. IVAN is a huge step up from DOOMRL, the interface is quite a bit more complex. But IVAN is easier to play than most other rogue-likes because of the tilebased sprite graphics.

Angband- Angband is both simpler, and more complex than IVAN. Angband is about the purest form of roguelike you'll find out there. You can find both tilebased graphics, and ascii forms of the game. The best part about Angband is each time you delve into the dungeons (100 layers deep), each level is completely different than before. That means you simply can't map out the dungeons. This game will also rape your ass like IVAN.

Nethack- I haven't played much of this one, but I've heard it's a bit more complex than Angband. I hear stories of someone tripping down some stairs in the dark, and landing on a basilisk corpse, than turning to stone from the magic of the creature. Awesome. There's a tilebased graphical frontend, and also a really pretty, isometric one called Falcon's Eye, but I prefer the top down tiles.

Dwarf Fortress- This one is simply pure awesome. The game is a complete pain in the ass to learn to play, and I'd recommend finding a community to how to do things in it. But if you stick with it and learn the ropes, you'll be presented with one of the best experiences in RPG gaming. Dwarf Fortress takes aspects from classic roguelikes, the sims, rts games, and sandbox style play, and rolls it all into video game sex. Dwarf Fortress uses the ugly Ascii graphics that most people can't stand, but the game allows so much to happen. A more imaginitive player can create a room to execute dwarfs with a flood, or even lava. And I've even had a dwarf go psycho, kill another dwarf, and make a legendary pair of pants out of his hide. It's been awhile since I've delved into this one, hell, just talking about it makes me want to play it again.

If you can get over the graphics, and the sometimes terrible interfaces, you'll have some of the best games of your life.

old school games had something that the shit today lacks, sure graphics are better. But in those days those games had fun factors on astronomical levels the games had great story and focused on the things that matter.

I use emulators quite a lot; it's nice having basic graphics and simple gameplay. There seems to be a greater emphasis on gameplay back then. Sure, there was a bunch of shitty games, but I don't know, I'd rarely get bored with older games. Don't get me wrong, playing stuff like Gears of War or Rainbow Six: Vegas is outstanding, however I have to stop playing after a while.

I used to have aload of older consoles and computers, but had to get rid of them due to the space they took up. When I move out I hope to buy them again.

I have fond memories of playing games like Maniac Mansion on the C64, How to be a Complete Bastard on the Spectrum, Sonic on the Megadrive etc. The list goes on and on. It might be purely a nostalgic thing; in 10 years time we might be saying how we prefer playing GOW to the new stuff being created.

Meh, I dunno.

I was just playing street fighter 2 turbo yesterday. I used a cheat that allowed me to throw sonic booms without holding back for 2 seconds.

I got Duke Nukem 3D on my computer. I also got the Sims Complete Collection. Not so old school with that one, but the game was released about 8 years ago.

i love old school games.

i think some newer games like devil may cry 3 and god of war, where it is really just hack and slash, are pretty similar in the style of gameplay to the golden oldies.

As of late ive been doing a lot with the old school games that i grew up with and playing them. I still got my Super Nintendo plugged in with Super Mario World, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, etc.

Also been playing Commander Keen, Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure, Quake, Word Rescue (yes, fucking Word Rescue, where it makes you spell "dog" and find a picture of it while dumping sludge on random ass guys trying to kill you). Great stuff.

Old school games compared to new games are akin to the girl next door compared to the homecoming queen. Sure the homecoming queen's better looking, but the girl next door actually has a soul.

Back in the day, games just felt more magical than they do now. Even the old Atari 2600 games had a certain something that games today seem to lack. My favorite DOS games were Bard's Tale III, Wing Commander, and King's Quest. Old arcade games are another thing I look back on a lot. Half a roll of quarters was all I needed to while away an afternoon on Ms. Pac-Man, Galaga, anything that came out before 1989. Not like today's games that all look real nice, but only give you about 5 minutes for two dollars. :(

Nethack ate many years of my life. Back then though, I'd play anything with a title like that and call myself a "hacker". Also played the shit out of Uplink.

Old games relied on being fun, because they couldn't rely on looking good.

Everybodys banging on about the physics in Crysis(I think) and I watched a video, on about how the trees move.

WTF

Why the fuck would anyone give a shit about the trees, yeah sure it's impressive and looks fancy, but it's add fuck all the fun factor of a game.

I too also enjoy played older games. Brings back memories aswell, been playing the Sonic series recently Emulated (MS to MD), not as fun as on PC though!
