I just saw this, on its first day of release. I admit, I saw it because I'd never before seen a movie with an all Asian American cast before, and I wanted to see how the director dealt with racial identity issues.
It was much better than I expected. The director, Justin Lin, crafts a clever and entertaining story, and makes a flick about teenagers without making it cheesy. Freddie Prinze Jr. is nowhere to be seen, and I couldn't be happier about it.
Check it out at www.betterlucktomorrow.com, or Roger Ebert's review at http://suntimes.com/output/ebert1/wkp-news-better11f.html.
Any other impressions on this movie?

Here's an interesting thing-The story from that movie is based on things that happened at a high school in my town-Sunny Hills-where my sister is currently attending. The Asian population is pretty high there.

sure, kanism. it's about a group of kids who live in orange county, where suburbia was practically invented, who are bored with their lives. They get straight A's are on the honor roll, etc...their problem is, they seem to have no morality...they quickly get caught up in the drug trade and end up committing a murder...The film focuses less on the action sequences than it does the psychological mindset of these kids, and the script is on point.
The director, justin lin (http://www.asiasource.org/arts/justinlin.cfm) , is no sellout; he was offered a big contract to make this film and turned it down because the production company wanted a token white character. it wouldnt be true to the story, lin argued. And he's right. If, for example, Tarantino had put a token Black guy as one of the Reservoir Dogs..the movie would have sucked. this doesn't mean that Lin or Tarantino are discriminatory or bigoted. it means that they stay true to their characters.
