I was so fuckin pissed off when I realised that I couldnt play PES6 or GT4 on my PS3, I felt so ripped off after Sony claiming how great backwards compatability is on the PS3...... Yeah, but you cant play the 2 biggest and best games from the PS2 :banghead:

Hell yeah. Ive been wating for the upscale. Totally awesome. The only thing they can do great now is allow controller charging with the system off.

The backwards compatability problem was fixed in the first or second firmware update, with the exception of some incredibly -small- errors in a few games. None of those rendering the game unplayable though. Pretty sure they're all fixed by now.

You can update your firmware via the cross media bar where it says "Settings" then from there go down to "System Update." If you have no wireless connection to run your console off of, then just download it here

LOL GT4 has been playable since day 1 on PS3... not only that but you were always able to play GT4 in 1080i mode (fuck even the PS2 could do it).

But this is great news! Not even the 360 upscales DVDs. PS3 has the 1-Up!!!

actually the xbox 360 has been upconverting for a long while, it's just the type of cord that prohibits it. if you have been using VGA, you've been getting upconversion for a long time, also the xbox 360 elite also upconverts.

upconversion can ONLY happen under HDMI or for the xbox 360 through VGA.

i know right, the updates, though not as good as xbox live spring and fall updates, are still consistently good.

Why would 360 only upscale when using VGA? That sounds like a fucking cop-out to me. Other cables can do 720p/1080i np... so why cant the 360 upscale when outputting to Component? I have the 360, hooked up with component, on 1080i tv, and DVDs have always played in 480p on it.

Just a bump.

I was downloading it when it got to 60% and my joypad charge ran out. When I plugged it in to to charge the downloader had gone and it went to the page that told you what was on it. It then downloaded again, quite fast. Got to 60% then skipped to 100%

does that mean it done?

It didn't say anything about errors or anything, but I don't know how to check it downloaded.

nvm, it say the latest version is installed when i go to system update.

After fidiling, this is what i found........

1) PS2 games look great with the smoothing and upscaling, all games....including FFX and XII, Grandia 3, Dragon Quest 8, Odin Sphere, SF alpha anthology......look Phenomonal!!!!

2) Dont use the progressive scan setting in the games cause then it wont upscale!

3) Ps1 games look more natural, and it seems to be that 2D sprites are the only things smoothed for ps1, as textures and polys still look like ps1,which is to say, chunky!

4) The PS3 can only upscale to 720p for ps1 games, if set to higher, the frame rate drops on all ps1 games!

5)PS2 games actually have less jaggies with the smoothing, and all games look great! Even 2D ones! However, if the game has a filter option, still use it, because the games look even better and more clear, like less of a haze is on them!

Its a great update, they just have to work on PS1 games a little more! But now i prefer to use my PS3 for all my PS games, and that says something!

Well, I just watched my first upscaled DVD. Temple of Doom looked awesome. Definitely on scale with my Blurays. Now I dont need to spend the xtra chedda on the BR versions! :)

It's not a cop out. It's because of the HDCP, or High bandwidth Digital Content Protection. The PS3 is the same as the 360. You can only upscale DVD's using an HDMI or DVI interface. If you're using component cables then you're shit out of luck trying to upscale copyright protected DVD's.

If you dont have a wireless network and the 60GB PS3, you hafta download the update to a jumpdrive or memory card, and install it manually.

You do not need a wireless connection, just some software to make your PC a DLNA server. I recommend tversity, and there are many more.

Hell, even Windows Media Player 11 works.
