Who would have guessed that video games could be so bad for Sony's (SNE ) health? On May 16 the Tokyo company said its games division's $1.9 billion loss was mostly to blame for a 68% drop in overall operating earnings last fiscal year. Sony cited the PlayStation 3's monster production and marketing costs, which it warned investors about before the machine's debut last November. But Sony also fell 500,000 consoles short of its production target. The 5.5 million PS3s shipped globally through March left the onetime king of the industry trailing both its main rivals, Nintendo (NTDOY ) and Microsoft (MSFT ). Worse, the actual number of PS3s in stores was closer to 3.6 million, with the remaining 1.9 million either sitting in warehouses or en route to retailers. New games chief Kazuo Hirai is under the gun to boost sales by discounting consoles once he takes over for PlayStation inventor Ken Kutaragi next month. Since Sony is already losing money on every console, a price cut would hurt. Then again, games won't be profitable for at least another year, so the company might as well take the hit now.

If only Sony (SNE) could fast-forward to March, 2009. That's when the Japanese technology company expects its video game business to finally make money after two years of hefty operating losses. But the prospect of Sony's PlayStation 3 gaming console dragging down earnings for another two years shouldn't have fazed anyone who attended the company's fiscal-year earnings announcement on May 16. Financial analysts have been offering a similarly gloomy forecast for months now.

However, investors were in for a nasty surprise on May 16: Sony failed to hit its own PS3 sales targets, Chief Financial Officer Nobuyuki Oneda said. Although the company had forecast global shipments of 6 million machines by the Mar. 31 end of its fiscal year, its factories made and sent off just 5.5 million. Worse, the actual number of PS3s in stores was closer to 3.6 million. The remaining 1.9 million were either sitting in warehouses or en route to stores, leaving as much as $1.1 billion in inventory. Perhaps that's why the company chose to stick to a more conservative sales forecast of 11 million units this year.

The results confirmed that Sony's newest console, launched last November, is off to a slow start. The one-time king of gaming consoles now trails both of its chief rivals, Nintendo (NTDOY) and Microsoft (MSFT). Earlier this month Nintendo said it had shipped 5.84 million Wiis in the same four and one-half month period. Microsoft, which had a 12-month head start, upped its tally to 10.4 million units through March.
A Drag-Down Effect

The shortfall raises questions about Sony's ability to meet its own timeline for a turnaround in the video gaming division. Making the PS3 a commercial success is crucial if Welsh-born Chairman Howard Stringer is to deliver on his promise of rebuilding the Japanese electronics and entertainment giant. While games account for just 14% of overall sales, their losses have bogged down the company's overall earnings.

Last year Sony booked an overall operating profit of $598 million—a 68% drop from the previous year—even though sales rose 10.5% to $69 billion. The gaming unit's losses alone exceeded $1.9 billion. (The previous year, the division booked a $72.5 million gain.) Had the unit been profitable, Sony's earnings wouldn't have looked so dreadful. Morgan Stanley (MS) analyst Masahiro Ono reckons the gaming division will lose another $240 million this year despite an expected 50% rise in sales, before things turn brighter.

Video games also play an outsized role in the company's image as a leader in digital technologies. The PS3 represents the first outing for two brand-new technologies: the high-definition Blu-ray DVD player and the blazing-fast Cell chip. Those newfangled technologies are expected to end up in other Sony products, possibly as early as this year. Lowering the cost of producing them would lead to the efficiencies that executives have been counting on for years.
Discount the Console?

To be sure, two years of losses are to be expected for a new machine that's crammed with the latest whiz-bang technologies costing billions of dollars. Sony executives have long argued that's a small price to pay for five years of steady profits, as production cost-cutting take effect and software licensing fees come pouring in.

But Sony is now under immense pressure to find a way to close the gap with the competition. One possibility: discount the console. That would likely spur demand among ordinary consumers and keep game-software developers from shelving their own plans for rolling out future PS3 games.

Blatant attack!? What!?

I merely quoted a source. I even said that they didn't know what they were talking about in the title!

Wikipedia's definition:

Fanboy is a term used to describe an individual (usually male, though the feminine version fangirl may be used for females) who is utterly devoted to a single fannish subject, or to a single point of view within that subject, often to the point where it is considered an obsession. Fanboys remain loyal to their particular obsession, disregarding any factors that differ from their point of view. Fanboys are also typically aggressive and hateful towards the opposing brand or competition of their obsession regardless of its merits or achievements.

What am I a fanboy of?

hmm i just copied and pasted my reply for that retarded Ps3 rap thread.

But yeah this is a bit console warish and so it would have been more sensible to place in the Console war thread since it isn't really about games but rather a consoles affect on a company.

Nope, not console warring at all. Just posting an interesting arcticle that's video game related. Everyone else can take it as they like.

Now if I wanted to say something like "Sony Sucks!", or "XBox 360 Farenheit", or even "Wiinie", I'd visit your thread.

It seems everyone is screaming for Sony to drop the price, but that could help them survive or be the final nail in the coffin.

As it says here, the games themselves are running them further into the red, or have I just misunderstood what they were saying? Anyway, it's probably on about the costs of the new format plus paying their Dev. Houses Millions to fund games at the same time, which is probably not helping them.

It also mentions Sony believing that what happened with Microsoft will happen with them, lose on each Console and gain in everything else but so far it's been the complete opposite. The Xbox 360 was sold out everywhere right until the end of April and then MS finally got the production up and hype slowly fizzed, but the PS3, in Europe, was on shelves everywhere a week after Launch and experienced a 80+% drop in sales and has been struggling since. One look at UKResistence is enough confirmation. With very little Consoles Sold, how can they expect such a boom in Software Sales that would make a Juggernaut like Sony care. Wasn't it said that Sony would need to sell 30 Games per Console Sold to see them through the 7-10 years?

I hope Sony come back, even after Hirai's statement of no PS4, to battle it with Microsoft, not because it'll be cheaper and such for gamers but for the fact I don't want every Console to be forced into becoming similar to the Wii. With both Sony and MS battling as the Juggernaut it'll be the best for the Gaming Industry IMO.

I think Sony are just waiting for the decent games to come out. They'll prob hit us with a slight price cut.
