Should they go back to making more (enhanced) 2D classic style scrolling games as opposed to 3D where often the playability has got lost?

the guys at newgrounds tried with alien hominid and you seen how that turned out I loved the 2D era but times change they just have to stop worrying about how good a games graphics are and get back to the good old fun

some of the games nowadays are absolute crap even though they have the best graphics

games are supposed to be games if I wanted a real life simulator I would go outside if I want to fly past in a gokart and rattle people with big red shells I'll play the computer :dunce:

I wish they made another ALUNDRA or zelda with the 2D top down view

I remember when I was 7-8 I loved to play my old SNES. And when I first got a n64 and my first 3D game I didn't like it because it was all about graphics and the controls were too complicated and there were too many things to look at and take care of. In sidescrollers, all you had to do is go left, right, up and down and hit few buttons and it was hella fun.

That's why I'm looking for a Wii, because I always prefered gameplay over graphics.

Most old games suck ass.

Sure you get your classics, however they all age in time.

3D games have far more to do and are far more fun, i dont believe any of that bullcrap that 2D games are 'more fun' than 3D games, because why the fuck do we still have 3D games? Why is there a multibillion dollar industry in 3D games? Why do we keep buying more powerful hardwear? Why are all decent new games 3D?

If we stick with 2D we permantly cripple gaming technology.

Shit why don't we stick with Black and White televisions ...

Thats just about the dumbest thing Ive ever heard. Since when are 3D games always better? Becuase they have good graphics? Thats bullcrap! Lets take this for instance. You start playing LOZ:ALTTP and you think its awesome. You look over and see your PC with Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing on it. You say, "Wow, that sure is a crappy game! But it has 3D graphics! So it must be better and more fun!" That right there is what you just said.

Sure you get your classics, however they all age in time.

Since when? I play the original Super Mario Brothers all the friggin time!
I perfered Super Mario Brothers over Mario 64. I did'nt even LIKE Mario 64.
Kid Icarus? I play more than Halo. Halo has good graphics, and it IS fun, but I just think that Kid Icarus is better. Its My opinion. Dont go around saying that all 2D games suck, and that old games arent fun anymore.

Dont get me wrong, I am an avid gamer, and both types appeal to me. There are great 2D and 3D games out there. I love Counter Strike. I Love Garrys Mod. I love Halo. But just becuase they are 3D does'nt make them better.

My 2 cents :D

Why does everyone assume that all new games are EA titles.

For every shit game that comes out today there are around 10 shit titles that came out on the old SNES.

However nowadays companies have to put hundreds and thousands of dollars into their games, thats a serious investment which in turn makes the developers much more focused on actually getting a good game out there.

Some genres are 2D, while others are 3D. FPS, racing games are meant to be 3D and Platformers or puzzle games work better 2D

I also feel Super Mario Bros is a different genre than Super Mario 64, so why compare? Personally, I prefer 2D games. I like Grand Theft Auto 1 and 2 better than 3.

It's silly to say that 3D is better than 2D, or the other way around.

And yes, 2D is often better than 3D. Proof: Worms, Lemmings, Bomberman

Yes, but I don't think less 3D games should be made.

I love 2D games but I also love 3D games. I still play 2D games all the time, both old and new. Some example are the Mario games, Castlevania and Kirby.

It is true that many 2D games in the past did suck but the same thing still is happening today. I feel that many games that are being released today suck. Some are even highly rated and get huge amounts of fans when they aren't really that great. It seems like there are less games being released these days than in the past though.

I would love to see a 2D sidescrolling game like Castlevania released on a next-gen console with amazing graphics, AI, effects, cinematics and etc. but I don't think it will happen much since they could just slap together a 3D game and make a better profit since it can be more appealing to a larger audience.

It has happened of course. Super Paper Mario is an example. It's mainly 2D and the game is really good. Not at fun as the older 2D Mario games like Super Mario though.

If I really want to play a new 2D game though... I just use my DS. There are still a lot of new 2D games with nice graphics coming out for it. Yoshi's Island, Castlevania and Kirby are my favorites.

3d games have more variety in most cases.

The guys from newgrounds are making another 2d side-scroller beat'em'up game right now. I can't remember the name, but it's a 4-player game where each of you play a different knight with a different weapon and skills. Looks pretty damn fun to me, and it'll be downloadable off of the xbox live marketplace for pretty cheap

Edit : Castle Crashers, this game is going to be dope. And check out the trailer in the media section of the page. http://www.castlecrashers.com

I submit to you that three-dimensional games do not exist!

Video games have always been displayed on a two-dimensional screen, and have always been two-dimensional images. Until we can actually see a game represented in the third dimension, free of a flat surface, than all games are in fact, two dimensional.

Okay, in all seriousness:

Neither 2-D nor 3-D games are truly "better". There are plenty of things you can do in a 3-D game that can't be done in a 2-D, and vice versa.

For example:

In a 3-D game, you can easily represent height, width, and depth. That single factor alone opens up enormous gameplay possibilities. This element allows much more freedom of movement.

In 2-D games, it's simply much easier to do things that are difficult or even impossible in a 3-D game. Two-Dimensional games don't require nearly as much AI coding for paths, and can also easily process enormous amounts of characters on screen at once. Physics are much easier to process and are usually much more accurate in 2-D games. And every individual pixel can represent a seperate object, in cases of fluids or sand, so the overall volume can remain absolutely constant, such as if you decide to move a few thousand grains of sand from one container to another (impossible to do with a 3-D game at this point).

Each have their own pro's and con's when it comes to possible gameplay elements.

We've already seen instances where 3-D versions of a particular franchise simply can't hold up to their 2-D predecessors. Castlevania, Megaman, Fighting games in general, and Chrono Trigger. Of course, all of those are debatable (I personally loved Megaman Legends, but it felt like a totally different game to me), but you'll find that the general populous of gamers would agree.

We're gamers, that's already out there.

I like both 3D and 2D graphics, but for different games...

For example, Mario and Sonic were FANTASTIC 2D games, but lost something when they switched over to 3D, Zelda on the other hand worked brilliantly as a 3D game, same with Grand Theft Auto.

As for fighters, I could go either way, I love the 2D beat-them-up's but I also love the 3D ones.

It all depends on if the game needs it really.

Pff, didn't even see that.

Whatever, okay, I'm a loser. Shit, I have fun to have fun, not to look "cool" with the crowd.

I play 2-D platformers, I nerd out about new technology, and I even enjoy playing dungeons and dragons occasionally with my friends. I even went out for some laser tag a month and a half ago, and I'm twenty-five.

I'll admit I'm a loser. But you're fucking boring to hang out with.

I believe both types can be good.

3D should theoretically offer more variety in some genres - i.e. Oblivion.

But there are many great 2D games. I still play Heroes III which is completely 2D. Then there's the Baldur's Gate series which is rather 2D but feels quite 3D - regardless, the art is so intricately awesome that graphics takes a backseat.
