... for large libraries... I am getting close to 300 gigs now and WMP takes forever to do anything, espescially if i want to search for a song...
Anyone have any suggestions for one that does good even with alot o music?

WINAMP if you're looking for organization. I like WMP though due to the album art being shown in the library.

Im assuming you are talking about WMP 11?
I rolled back to 10 because i couldnt figure out how to make it show the total quantity and number of tracks and stuff...
How is winamp for searching?
EDIT: i just realized im actually wayyyyyyy over 300 hundred lol.. ill get a pic and post it in the library thread.

On Winamp if you select "all artists" it tells you how long it woudl take to go through all the songs, how many songs you have and how much space its taking up.

300 GB of music is useless.

On winamp just press J and type in the name of the song you are looking for.

What's wrong with that?
I never use libraries for my music, mainly because it slows down whatever media player I use - I just use Explorer.

because it's near impossible to listen to all of the songs... unless you play a few songs a day for a few years.

not only that but who are you kidding? I guarantee only 1/100 of that collection is worth listening to never mind saving.

I know I won't be able to listen to every song in my collection, but that's not the idea. The idea is to have a large choice in what to listen to, so that if I ever want to listen to something, I have it.
I've listened to quite a decent portion of my collection.

Not true. ;)
If you like/listen to whole albums of a band instead of a few random songs, 1/100 of 300 GB (3 GB) doesn't cover much - I have a few bands/artists in my collection which exceed 3 GB alone. A very large percentage of a big collection is worth listening to if you have an open mind.

@ OP:
you could try Linux with a command line media player like mPlayer or such. Large libraries + command line aren't so much of a problem for Linux.
@ temp:
I have over 3Gb of Rush, and nearly 2.5Gb of the Ozric Tentacles, which far exceeds any other artist in my library at the moment, so yeah, I can see that 300Gb isn't much of a stretch if you have loads of entire discographies and live bootlegs and such covering many genres of music.

Rev'd and temp, you're both exactly right... Bob dylan is one of my favorite artists, and his music alone is 6.5Gb, and i have alot of complete discographies... and like temp said, whenever i want to listen to something, i have it. I listen to all sorts of music, and my tastes vary dramaticaly so it is nice to have a large selection to choose from. When I'm at work, i put all my music in a playlist, randomize it and push play. No, i probably won't ever get through it all, and yes there is some shit in there, but i have found ALOT of really great stuff that i would have never discovered before.
Thanks for allll the media player suggestions, i think im gonna give billy a try. I have an install of ubuntu on another machine so i may give the linux thing a try.
BTW, i had windows media do a local search for all media last night while i was sleeping, turns out im well over 400gb lol.

Billy is different in that it is 2 to 8 times faster than Winamp. For example, in Billy performance tests opening 4000 tagged MP3s takes about 4 seconds to load up. In Winamp, which is considered fast, this same task takes over one minute. Other players are just not optimized to handle such a load.
Billy also uses half the memory as Winamp, and has 28% less CPU load in its decoding engine.

(Freewere so no crap, either)

Why not iTunes?

eh.. nothing really wrong with it, but it does use alot of memory, and has alot of superfluous features that i dont use (i dont have an ipod or anything)

I don't like itunes one bit. If I got an ipod I would just find some way to get around using it, which im sure there are.

i have an iRiver H10, one of the older ones. All i ahve to do is hook it up and drag and drop music to it like its a portable hard drive. Only problem is its only 20gb.. someone needs to come out with 100gig or so that doesnt require a stupid media player to sync with it.

I want to get an 80gb ipod. Not that I have that much, but in the event I ever do I don't have to worry about removing shit. All I have now is a 1gb mp3 player with a 512mb card.
