The modern day scene has been extremely quiet.

Most of the band's who broke through in the early to mid 90's are still basically the best the modern-day version of the genre has to offer.

Its such a shame, as most of the 'ska' bands popping up now are awful punk bands who say "hey my friend plays a sax, lets be ska".

the more well-known bands of the genre are, it seems, trying to leave their ska 'label' behind. Less Than Jake have been major culprits over their past couple of albums, I'm fucked if I can remember some nice two-tone guitaring and horns in unison on any of their latest releases.

Reel Big Fish certainly scared me for a while with the 'Cheer Up' album, especially that song 'where have you been'... christ I almost had a heart-attack as I thought they'd gone all emo on me! Aaron Barrett (tremendously underrated guitarist) is certainly the light that keeps their ska-stylings intact - Shame his side project 'The Forces of Evil' didn't stick around after a single album. :(

Also another point on what I've noticed about modern day garage 'ska' bands... the vocalists are all as weak as diluted rat's piss! Lovely two-tone, nice brass section, bass keeping the beat hopping along nicely, then..... *SQUEEEEEEEEK*.

Well, if by dead you mean not mainstream, then yes it is dead and has been for many years. But ska is still going strong. Bands like the toasters, reel big fish, streetlight manifesto, and mustard plug are keeping it going.

As long as SOMEONE is still playing a genre of music, I don't see it as dead.

Would you consider classical dead? Or just all of the composers.

Thirdwave ska is dead. The traditional ska/reggae rocksteady sound is coming back now. (at least in my opinion) Check out The Aggrolites and the Slackers for some great modern day sounds. Also, my city, Houston has a decent scene for it. Ryan Scroggins and the Trenchtown Texans just signed with megalith and will be putting out an album in August. Check them out, they are gonna be big!

ska was never alive.
People who don't know what they are talking about shouldn't talk.

Reel Big Fish's cover of "Take On Me" is pretty cool. I have that song on the PC version of Crazy Taxi.

There was some really good classic ska/rock music in the 90's. I haven't kept up to date on new music lately, but I imagine there are still a few bands from then making decent stuff.

Besides that, all new stuff is crap in every genre.

I actually gave it a chance when saw they were fellow Croydon boys. I don't know, it's just a bit happy clappy, everyone loves each other and we're guna dance around the room to upstroke guitars and trumpits to show it.

Hahahaha Yeah, their style of ska is a bit more upbeat. You'd probably like rocksteady ska better. It's not as happy clappy.
