View Full Version : Is Tiger Woods's "clutchness" overrated?

So they mentioned yesterday that Tiger has NEVER won a Major when he wasn't in the lead going into the last day. Of course he has been incredibly clutch in KEEPING the lead. I believe he's lost just one major when holding the lead going into the last day. But it would seem that if you're one or two shots back going into the last day, that there's even more pressure to play well and make up ground.

Yea, it's a bit weird that he has never come back to win a major. He should have shot a lot better in the 3rd round....he needed to make some of those multiple birdie putts that he had. I think it's only a matter of time until he pulls a comeback off.

BTW, Tiger has never lost the lead when tied or leading a major going into the 4th round. You said he's lost 1.

But the guy, even when 2-5 shots back, always has a way to make it to 1 shot back with a couple holes left. In that aspect i guess you could say he is overrated, but only by a technicality. The guy is still a monster in 'game time' situations.

I think it is. I mean, yesterday he bladed the hell out of a chip shot and proceeded to hit the next one fat as hell and only about 4 feet. If he was as clutch as the media would have you believe, he never would have done that. That being said, he's still probably going to go down as the best golfer ever. So take this "over-rated" aspect of his game with a grain of salt.

The greens were so quick, and so unpredictable last night, that even Tiger messed up a few shots

^ unpredictability is one thing, but he down right screwed up 2 chips, completely miss-hit them. He bladed the first, then over-corrected and hit the next one fat. That's a sign of shaky nerves to me.

I won't argue, as I'm not 100% au fait with golf, I know some....honest. :)

This is US freaking open guys. If you look at the greens they are retarded which is why the highest score was +5. You can say what you want about his "clutchness" but he's just good and just because he misses a tying shot (which was incredibly tough) doesn't make him any worse. If he wasn't that good he wouldn't have set himself up in that position. Some of his greatness has worn off though...

It took a man playing the best 4 rounds of golf he has ever played in his entire life and having two below par rounds on one of the hardest courses in the world to beat tiger woods by one single stroke, not to mention he could have taken it into a playoff with his final put. You are a moron if you are going to act like if that somehow shows tiger woods is over rated.

Guess what... Jordan didnt hit every buzzer-beater either.

I think it's a fluke that he's never had a come from behind win, whatever the stat is... I'm sure he'll have some eventually. He's the only guy on tour you expect to win vs the entire field, and the one guy who's almost always near the top on Sunday. He's the best golfer ever, just a matter of time before he's the most decorated. And like people said.. Cabrera played the best golf of his life and won by one stroke over Tiger who couldn't putt at all.

You guys are coming off like morons, no one ever asked or said that Tiger was overrated or that he wasn't the best golfer in the world. The question was whether his clutchness was overrated or not. Just one small aspect of his game and his greatness. I think never coming from behind on sunday at a major coupled with his performance on sunday makes that a very good question. No one is even saying he isnt' clutch. But if you believe everything you hear and read in the media, then you'd think he never loses and always comes back to win every tournament. So, in that sense, I'd say his clutchness is overrated, from the strict definition of the word. But it's not like that's his fault, he didn't rate his clutchness and he's still the best golfer in the world.
