Stronghold: Crusader (2nd best RTS),

SuperPower 2,

Starship Troopers: Terran Ascendancy,
Dawn of War (best RTS imho, not really old school),
Romance of The Three kingdoms,
Aplpha Centauri,
Scorched Earth,
Black And White,
Settlers 4,
Cossacks,
Kohan: Ahriman's Gift,
Close Combat (I recommend all, recent one is Baghdad),
Freedom Force (RPG/RTS),
Soldiers of Anarchy,
Fallout: Tactics.

If you're hardcore and play RTS using numbers and symbols on a map, check out TacOps or Future Force Company Commander.

For a 4x strategy game:

I'd go with Galactic Civilizations.
