You can put down Toronto vs Ottawa, battle of Ontario can't get any better. Also Lakers vs Celtics. The rivalry between the two were huge in the 80's and still are, well sort of since they're both crap now.

As i am from Manchester i gotta say United/City....Liverpool.

But i think Celtic/rangers is the most fierce with the whole Catholic/Protestant sectarian thing.

College rivalries are much better than pro sports. Ohio/Michigan would probably be the best. There are some other good college rivalries as well. Alabama/Auburn, UT/OU, etc.

Are you trying to say that fighting is an indication of a good rivalry. I find it an indication of idiocy personally. This is a game. A rivalry should consist of mutual respect mixed with a little bit of disdain and a lot of good competition. That is why I think the Boston/New York thing is a little overrated. New York has been dominating for decades until just recently.

EDIT: Except, ofcourse, for the NHL where fighting (on the ice in the course of the game) is a part of the sport.

I'm suggesting that if a true rivalry has been operating for a century or so then the passions involved might well have spilled over into violence between competitors or fans at some point.

Oh i voted Michigan Ohio State. But this is way to hard to decide. College Rivalries are better then Pro. Duke Carolina, Miami Florida State, Bama Auburn, USC Norte Dame, OU UT, Indiana Kentucky.

And the pros you got Yanks and Sox (which is way overrated, no one beside the east coast cares) Cowboys Redskins, Flames Oilers, Lakers Celtics, but that ones kinda dead. So probably more Spurs Mavs, or Mavs Suns.

I would say it's quite similar to people fighting over a flag or a line on a map, as demonstrated by my previous link where the football riot was a symptom of a greater national rivalry.

I picked michigan/ohiostate, dallas/skins or browns/pittsburgh i wouldve picked in the nfl. Most of us dallas fans hate philly the most because their fans are the gayest fucking people on the planet, but skins/dallas is probaly a bigger rivalry because unlike philly the skins actually won a superbowl.

Yes, some people care very little about arbitrary nations or flags and wouldn't fight for them even if they were 'threatened', and some people care so much about their affiliation with a team and associated fan base, that they will spend every penny on the club, spend every waking moment in activities related to the club, and on occasion fight for the club's honour.
Fanaticism is part of human nature.

It is only a great rivalry is the players are in on it too. In all pro sports rivalries with maybe the exception of soccer, the players do not treat treat the game any different. College sport rivalries are where it is at.

You need to watch more hockey than. Players get at each other like no other in the BOA or BONY or BOO:bigwink:

Here is another great NHL rivalry brewing. Sabres -Senators

I'll agree with you on the NBA (the only thing that comes close is Celtics-Lakers, and that's not even really a rivalry anymore), but the NFL has number of good rivalries.

Aside from, of course, the Browns-Steelers, the Cowboys-Redskins games are always good to watch. You also have the Broncos-Raiders, the Bears-Packers, and of course, the one that gets shoved down our throats every year, Brady-Manning...I mean New England-Indianapolis.

Being a Florida Fan, I left us out of Rivalry consideration because we have lots of rivalries, but no one great rivalry:

Football:
Florida v. Georgia
Florida v. Florida State
Florida v. Tennesse
Florida v. LSU

Basketball:
Florida v. Kentucky (Currently one of the top rivalries in College Basketball)
Florida v. Florida State (I dont know how, but FSU always manages to beat us once a year).

And of course, Every Florida fan hates Ohio State and every Ohio State fan hates Florida, but thats new to the 2006 Football/Basketball seasons.

You mean as the same level in only America right? and only idiots like you think it's stupid, cause you can't hop on some over-hyped, hood rat black players cock and dick ride him throughout the season. Your Lebron James pajamas will arrive in the mail soon you loser.:p

On a global scale Hockey is bigger than the NFL by a pretty big margin, i'm not sure about the others(probably even at best), but i know hockey is pretty big in Finland, Sweden, Russia, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany, Italy and of course Canada. NFL is only popular in America, mainly due to a big part of sports betting and fantasy football.

And for your information, the NHL attendance has a better game average percentage(over 17,000 per game @ over 85%) than the NBA, and the arenas seat less due to the size of the ice. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

Soccer is the #1 sport in the world, but not even on the radar in America. So i guess it sucks right, and no ones like it? Get your shit straight kid.

Hockey might get more people at games, but we both know the nba has ALOT more people watching their games then hockey. And im shouldnt even compare it to football, football quadrouples in attendance at games and probaly has 10x more viewers on TV.

I don't like non-professionals, Mostly which are NFL and NBA players. They can't speak right, dress right and act right and people(mostly which are white) should stop spending money to see them and there kids should stop trying to be like them(not all of them).

Sports in America NOW are setup to be viewed casually and for entertainment purposes only(NHL is not a casual sport), which is annoying as hell, it's all about money and the product has become so watered down, it's like Wal-Mart leagues.

A huge percentage of those viewers that watch the NBA and others are not real fans, they are your casual viewer who only know of that certain sport. It's a lazy/selfish act, typical average American people. So don't go thinking those leagues have huge fanbases. Just by internet alone, NHL message boards can be found more than others with more users on them. The Vancouver Canucks team site Message board alone has more users than every NFL board i've seen combined.:rollseyes

I think its funny how many people think American colleges have the best rivalry's. But in reality theres places if you wear the wrong jerseys you'll get stabbed. I think in all of sports its Celtic rangers because this boils down to religion and this is when it gets ugly.

Hockey- Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators.
These games get nasty on the ice and off the ice in the stands. Theres been brawls in the parking lots and everywhere.

Baseball- No real rivalries compared to other sports but the red sox and yankees. To me this isnt a rivalry since they play like 20 times a year and nothing happens.

American Football- No one really cares to be honest

The real football- Boca Juniors vs River Plate Argentina
Man city vs man united Man United vs Liverpool West ham vs mill wall. Fenabace vs Galatrasy.

And I think pretty soon Toronto FC and Montreal impact are going to have a really big shit fest because both cities hate each other and toronto fans are nuts and so are the montreal to. Soccer is booming in Canada.

its not like every time you wear another teams jersey you get stabbed, im sure theres been pretty bad stuff happen at nfl and college games too but i dont feel like looking

Buddy, when was the last time an NFL or college game got stopped because the fans were tearing the stadium apart. When was the last time that the team would not allow any fans into the stadiums during home games because of violence. If American NFL fans went to some stadiums in South America or Europe or even BMO in Toronto their is no dought in my mind that they would pay a costly price.

The players dont even hate each other that much anymore.
and the fans can freely go to the games and sit in rival fan sections without fear.

In places in europe and south america ,if you sit in the rival fan section you will be leaving on a stretcher or worse. You got fans who are willing to die for a team. No franchise in america has got fans like that.

first time i've really been urged to post...

Soccer rivalries are the best and most extreme type in the world of sports, they stretch every country... except the odd "let's invade other countries" countries :rollseyes

Nationally, it has to be Brasil - Argentina. historic.

and in clubs it could be...
Boca Juniors - River Plate (these fuckers tape themselves beating and torturing rival supporters)
Celtic - Rangers
Zenit - Spartak
Dynamo - Belgrade

He never said thats what makes a rivalry. When the fans trash the place, or there is fights that shows how inteanse a rivalry can be. Thats why soccer are the biggest. While the Yankees and Red Sox is still a big rivalry no one gets hurt, there is no damage, its way less inteanse than others. THats the point he was making.

Sigh. Just because people know how to behave themselves (see: act like adults) doesn't mean they are any less passionate about their teams or that there is any less of a rivalry. All it means is that they know how to act like human beings are supposed to act, not savage idiots.

How could you forget Miami? I know UF hasn't played them since 04, but the rivalry between Florida and Miami used to be much crazier than any other rivalry back in the day.

You need to understand one thing. Baseball and Football here are sports of entertainment. Soccer around the world is a sport of religion. Alot of Fanbases are literally gangs, and will attack opposing fans. You don't go into La Bombonera wearing a River Plate shirt or Newells old Boys jersey; you don't walk the Red mile in Calgary during playoffs wearing an Oilers jersey, you just don't and know not too. You can go into The Redskins stadium wearing whatever the hell you want, people as NFL fans don't take the game that serious, trust me, i know alot of NFL fans and they are as mild as they come.

It doesn't make fans better if they act crazier, but it does make fans more serious fans and rivalries rivalries.

PS- After the Sox won the world series, the Yankees/Sox has been anything but a rivalry. It used to be pretty good, pre 2004.

Soccer is booming in Canada.

don't give us this bullshit that american fans don't fight each other, go to a cubs/white sox game and sit in the bleachers i gurentee you will see fans beating the shit out of each other, ive seen it myself.

And the Yankees fans, if anything, are more like "Well.... I guess if you guys hate us, we should hate you too....?" Most Yankee fans I know really dont have a strong hatred for the Sox. They are basically just being polite and saying "Oh yeah, we hate you guys too." Really, every city hates the Yankees, so they can't be bothered fighting with just one.

My favorite was Wing/Avalance. Growing up in Detroit, that thing like encompassed my soul. Watching The Brawl in Hockey Town was like one of the greatest moments of my life. And seeing Lemieux curl into a ball as McCarty pounded him. I was only 8 years old, and I remember going to bed that night with a huge sense of pride and victory. Then the whole thing just died out. I would love to see it come back, Avalanche just need to play better.

But I voted for Ohio-Michigan.

I would bet majority of NFL fans are mild. Games i've been to(so called rivalries too) were boring as hell with no atmosphere. The NFL will always have a bad impression left on me.

You know it's a rivalry when, your ice girls(girls who clean the ice between periods or a timeout) get spit on by the opposing players and called names and the goaltender won't leave the crease so the girls can clean the ice.

What is means is that those fans don't know how to handle their excitement/emotion in a civilized manner. If that type of behavior was considered acceptable in a civilized society, one in which people do not resort to violence enmasse at the drop of a hat, I can guarantee you would see soccer style riots at college football games frequently. Fortunately for us we know how to act like grown ups instead of 4 year olds when we go to watch a sporting event. It is not about passion, it is about acceptable social behavior.

Baseball is dated to 1845. The National League began play in 1876 (I think). Loads of history there. It's always worth going back and seeing how the game was played in the dead ball era versus the game of today.

Selhurst Park wasn't their ground, they were sharing it on a temporary basis. I know about the franchise system in US sports, same applies to American sports in Europe to a certain degree (London Monarchs = Berlin Thunder). The whole thing with English style sports is that this doesn't engender enthusiasm.
English sporting clubs are traditionally much more integrated into the local community. In the olden days players would be from the factory next door, the ground and the players would be paid for from the gate reciepts, and the managers would be old players. The US system is to have the clubs owned by the league, with the league saying what players they are allowed to have, how much money they receive and can spend, and where the club is based, this just doesn't make sense to English fans. Just look at FC United Manchester and AFC Wimbledon.
So I'm agreeing with you, with colour.
I just don't think Wimbledon were always 'small time' they just lost support when they moved out of their own ground without a good local replacement.

once again...when was the last time the skins have been any good?

btw two receient good games do not make up for the fact that the bears and packers:
1. are only 200 miles apart from each other
2. have the most/second most championships
3. also have over 50 combined members of the hall of fame
4. have played each other 173 times.
5. combined to win every nfc north/central division championship in the current decade
6. play in two of the top five most historic venues (packers in top three of all major AMERICAN sports - fenway & yankees)

Sorry i thought you said when was the last time the rivarly has been good. The skins made it to the divisional round 2 years ago, and although this decade hasnt been the best for the skins, its not like the Packers and Chicago has had the best luck overall in the past 5-7 years. Before two years ago, the bears were filth besides the year when the A train came along. The packers have been almost irrelevant last few years. Also, you are trying to brag about winning the NFC North. Thats like someone bragging about beating up a five year old.

When the skins and cowboys play, its more nationally recognized than when the pack play the bears. Thats a fact.

Bosnia vs Serbia - Football (or any other sport)

I think Yankees-Red Sox is a pretty serious one and the Celtic-Lakers too.

If it gets your blood boiling then it is a true rivalry.

I voted for Michigan-Ohio State... I don't know of any other rivalry that can get as heated as this. The entire season can be boiled down to this game for these two teams, and usually, for the Big Ten in its entirety.

Granted, I don't live in Europe where futbol seems to get extremely intense. (I nearly voted for Barcelona - Real Madrid).

College football is less than a week away!!
