View Full Version : Thing That Aren't Really Sports

Some things that aren't really sports, for you confused "sport" fans.
Darts - It takes skill, but no athletic ability at all. I wouldn't call a 40 stone guy throwing a five gram needle an athlete.
Snooker/pool - I like snooker and pool. I play pool, and always watch the snooker when it's on the telly, but....same reason as above.
Golf - If you can still do it when you're sixty it isn't a sport.
Bowling - Again, I play this, it takes some skill, but you know the rest.
Bowls (Lawn Bowling?) - I actually watched this once.
I'm sure there are plenty of others. Maybe you want to add your own.

I've talked to girls that think they are in a sport cause they do Color Guard.
I don't really think of horse riding as a sport. Or cards.
you forgot curling and baseball and auto-racing (indy, nascar etc)

I would argue for Golf. It looks easy...but if you tried it you know that's its tough and you can never consistently be good even if you are Tiger Woods.

Not to mention the beating it puts on your body. Particularly the back and the wrists. Golf IS a sport.

Sport - A form of leisure-time physical activity that is planned, structured and competitive.
Nothing in there about athletes.
Golf, darts and CounterStrike can all be sports. I would argue against poker since the 'physical activity' part is questionable.

You're a moron. You've obviously never played golf. It takes the most amount of talent and skill as any sport out there, if not the most.

But let me guess, 'ZOMG DATS NOT SPORTSZ'.

It's tough to call between them to be honest. CS needs fast reflexes and good coordination, whereas poker requires control and calmness to keep the 'poker face.' By that definition, it probably is a sport. I'm suprised I didn't get flamed more for bringing up CS but at a high level, I would definitely regard it as sport.
Nah poker and cs arent "sports", i'd call them "games". Like Card/snooker/darts
Burningnun
07-04-2007, 12:57 PM
Snooker, darts and CS all require physical skill though, so by my definition they are sports. There was another definition floating around saying that to be a sport, large muscle groups need to be used. I'll check my big dictionary later.

I'd still say poker/cards, chess, CS, stuff like that are just games. The skill they require isn't really physical, it's more of a mental thing.
As far as darts and pool/snooker go, you gotta have good control, which is physical.
But chess, poker, counterstrike is more of a mental thing, as opposed to physical.
So I'm gonna have to say, despite what a dictionary says, Counterstrike and computer games are not sports. Neither is chess. Neither is poker.

Haha, wait, are people actually regarding Counterstrike as a sport? There is no physical skill, you're sitting at your computer pressing buttons, that's it. You're not jumping, swinging, shooting, catching, just pressing buttons. The people who made the game are the true competitors, because that actually takes talent.

Yeah, because my games designer friends spend all day "jumping, swinging, shooting, catching".

Hmm, did I say that? I said they were true competitors because they make the games. Nice try and being witty though. It's ok though, someday counterstrike will be a real sport just for you.

Sport: A structured activity that is both physically taxing, and competitive. (Thats my definition).
I feel Competitive Cheerleading and Marching Band can both be sports...given the right example. (Im prepared to argue both so call me out all you want).

CounterStrike = Not a Sport
Video Games = Not Sports
Poker = Not Sports
Must by physical if the way that, being in better physical shape will directly improve your ability to play the activity.

I have played golf actually, I don't find as physically draining as football, tennis or other sports. So I would argue that golf doesn't take the most amount of talent and skill as any sport out there.
But I won't call you a moron for thinking that, that would just be childish, and you're entitled to your opinion.
^^ just because golf in you opinion doesnt take as much skill as other sports doesnt mean its not a sport

Apparently to your mind requiring talent and skill means it must be physically draining. Makes no sense to me, but to each their own I guess. The bottom line is that golf is one of, if not the most difficult sport to master.

Yeah and what did you shoot? A 150?
Hell any old fool can swing a golf club for the first time, play 18 and say 'that was easy.'
But if you can't shoot below a 90, you're pretty sucky at golf.

Just because you're good at it doesn't mean it's an athletic sport. Something like glass eating may take skill as well, but it's not as impressive as those that are good at real sports.

Ok jackass, I'll call you out.
Neither are sports, they are both competitions. Just like figure skating, etc.
The differentiator is the judging. I'm not alone in saying that in sport, a clear winner needs to be defined at the end, more runs, points, goals, etc. The fact that to determine the winner, you need a subjective set of judges, makes it not a true sport, the correct term is a competition.
The most arguable aspect of this rule is Boxing, but it is commonly accepted that boxing is a sport because it can be flat out won. If I knock you out, I win. It is only "judged" when necessary. There is no way to literally win a cheerleading competition or a marching band competition.

Alright so Competitions cant be sports. I dont know if I can argue with that. MY definition of Sport says that Competitions can be sports...but the Official Definition may say otherwise.

Yeah...it was a sticky area with me as well until I read an article about the competition/sport scenario...really rang true with me. So, of course, I've decided to steal the idea and use it as my own.
For the record, I think Golf is a game and I think Nascar is a sport. It's easy to see it as a leisurely stroll with nothing but left turns...but get closer and see the endurance that it requires and it very well may change your mind. Guys lose like 5 pounds a race. The car is extremely hot, hard to handle, and races are very long.

Very good point about boxing. I think we can all agree that a "sport" in definition, has to take physical energy as well as some sort of intellectual capacity. And if anyone asks, yes, basketball does take brains, they don't all play streetball.
