Are we talking in terms of playing ability, or style? Because as you can see, I think John Rutsey is a more interesting drummer than Neil Peart, even though Peart has far more technical skill.

Neil is awesome, but there are many jazz musicians that are amazingly talented as well. i cant name any because im not a jazz enthusiast but lots of my friends do and whenever the subject of drumming comes up, many jazz drummer are mentioned to be just as badass as neil.(i havnt personally heard one but that doesnt mean it aint true

The only drummer I can think of is Joey Jordison from Slipknot, lol, he's an alright drummer.

Joey is Ok but somewhat clockwork (though for that music he does right). Regardless of music/stule etc., Tony Royster Jr. is great (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehmTBsmZhmY), Steve Gadd is good too; considering music - John Dolmayan is very strong, imho one of the best. Haven't heard Buddy Rich myself (posted above) but our drummer says he's a great one.
I think it's right to have several answers to the question; each of the best is the best in what he's doing.
