View Full Version : Diving and soccer......

To those who think that diving in soccer is necessary to protect yourself from injuries might want to have a look at this video from the 60's-80's of George Best, who died last year....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nplemK3Y4ns
check especially the part between 1:35-1:56......Damn, i wish there still were soccer players like this. Cant even think of how many times C.Ronaldo would have dive in that video.
RIP George Best.......

Yeah even though he was a Manchester United scummer I still have the greatest respect for Best, I would put him second only to Diego Maradona, even that is debatable with the great man himself (Maradona) saying the best player he has ever seen is George Best.
Also you are right there arent players like Best anymore but there are one or two who are going the right way to becoming legends.... Lionel Messi & Kaka.
And on the diving issue, its a european and south American thing, English players never dive or at least they didnt use to until the Italians started coming into the Premiership and bringing that annoying bull shit with them. Even now there arent many divers in the Premiership who are consistantly trying to cheat their way into winning a freekick or penalty apart from the obvious.

Greatest respect for Best, top 5 all-time, etc.
I don't really get the problem with diving, I mean, it's not proper sportsmanship and stuff, and it should be punished with a card, occasionally, but why does everybody make such a big deal out if it? I regularly see tackles that could destroy entire knees for the rest of an active carreer, I see players verbally abusing eachother almost every match, I see players asking for cards for their opponents more often than I can count, but diving is the one offence everybody keeps talking and whining about. For instance, Rooney almost prevented Carvalho from ever having kids ever again last World Cup, but we whine about how Cristiano Ronaldo was misbehaving. I really don't get it.

I think it has to do with that fact that it simply looks soooo stupid. Living in a country that isn't soccer crazy I've learned one thing...people REALLY hate diving. When I make my wife watch a game on TV, multiple times a game, when someone dives she says, "see, that's why I can't really get into soccer, these guys look like crybabies." Diving is bitch-made so to speak, it's whiny and lame and guys look like complete twats when they do it.

Now I will not claim to know a whole lot about soccer because, bottom line, I don't enjoy watching it. That being said, watching the World Cup final last year almost made me sick to my stomach. I didn't realize the wind off of someone as they ran past you could make you fall over, and I certainly didn't realize it was a penalty. I am sure glad you don't see as much of this type of thing in hockey.

You do have to realise that stability isn't a much sought-after quality in any footballplayer except possibly central defenders. For example, in American football, when a player gets tackled, and he keeps on running, that's a good thing, in football, when a player gets tackled and keeps on running, that's not specifically positive. Footballers are much more quick, short and agile, and they naturally fall over quicker. And not every time someone falls over it's either a defensive foul or a dive, sometimes people just fall over without breaking the rules at all. Also, in football, everything goes for the legs, which are often quite fragile, so an attempt to avoid a tackle, is always done by moving your legs and jumping, which doesn't improve stability, so players can even fall if they're not hit and they're still very carefull to avoid tackles. For example, Van Basten was a famous Dutch striker who played for Ajax and Milan, he was really good, except for his inability to dodge tackles. He played his last match at the age of 29 in 1993. Now, 14 years later, he still can't run, because his ankles are all fucked up.
So a lot of footballplayers fall without any clear reason, while still not actually diving, which is very confusing for people who don't watch the sport that often.

Understood. I must say though that I saw things in that Italy/France game that were very obviously dives, particularly (and this is nothing personal) on the side of the Italians. It was pretty sad I think. I do not know if it is that common or not, but I did see some poor acting skills.

Some players are known to dive, most noteably Sean Avery. They're doing it to get penalties called. However, the refs are quickly putting a stop on all of that.

Thanks for that Best Video. Him and Sir Stanley Mathews are like a breathe of fresh air:)
I hate diving because i feel its mainly a piss take. Usually when a player dives he ends up gaining a freekick and the person who tackled him can sometimes get carded. diving is cheated, its trying to con the ref into believing you've been fouled when really the defender hasnt done anything wrong.

Yeah I am glad to see them cracking down on it, although I don't think there is as much of it going on in hockey. One thing that bothers me though, and I do not mean to derail this thread, is when they call diving and call a penalty on the other player. I would think it is either a penalty or not, regardless of if it is embelished.

Nah, that's just Man City's tactics because they know they'll never be good enough to tackle him :lmao:
I personally hate diving aswell, because it's cheating the referee and it's not sporting. It also gives people who hate football some ammo.
Ronaldo is a complete twat when he does it, I hate him for it. But he's not so bad now, and there's people much much worse than him.
Ok, there's some tackles on football where a player pretends to be injured or hurt, but what gets to me is the people who say it's a fanny's game. It is not, if you've played proper, competetive football, you'd realise just how easy it is to get hurt, badly. Especially when you're running at full pace.
Oh, and this is the funnies dive in the world, ever

Anyway, does anyone have that dive from Patrick Vieira when Arsenal played Liverpool some years back? He fell over when there was about a foots gap between the two, can't remember the Liverpool player though. I remember seeing a picture of it in a sports magazine, it made me laugh me ass off.

Figo is the worst diver ever. He was the reason the aussie lost to Italy since h dover in the box. Thats the one thing I hate about soccer, most of them are diving pussies. Dont get me wrong I love soccer, its just so annoying to see so many dives.

Some rules were tweeked this year, and i bet that won't happen anymore. Now, if someone dives, he will get called out and get 2 minutes and no penalty on the other player, i'm hoping. Thing is, hockey players get really embarassed about that shit(unlike soccer where it's almost a normal thing), so i think it will mostly stop on it's own for that reason.

Arjen Robben when hes not injured
Robben does dive a lot, and he knows he shouldn't, but I think that fear for his knees and ankles play a much larger part in it than he would like to admit. He was a big fan of Van Basten, who got his career and legs ruined by being tackled very often and Robben is already easily injured, so he's afraid of tackles, which might lead to falling before he's tackled, which is both safer on the ankles and makes players a bit scared of trying to stop him.

Yeah, I admit Ronaldo dives a lot and I hate that. Especially when he clearly could have kept going or at least passed the ball.
He's still a very talented player though.

I cant find any videos of Klinsmann diving. Think it was him anyway. They were epic. It was like a dive, a roll, and he flicked up again to do another dive. Looked like a fish on land.
