Konami needs a few good men and women.
Early this morning at Konami's celebration of Metal Gear's 20th anniversary, the company rolled out details and footage of Metal Gear Solid Online -- but also announced the opening of the title's beta application process.
From August 20 to September 3, a closed beta will run for the 3,000 fans lucky enough to successfully make it through the front door. Want in? Keep your eyes trained on the Kojima Productions website -- the selection process is supposed to begin today and run through August 6.
Metal Gear Online will be available for up to 16 players to duke it out in the same match. Konami showed some of the game today -- we'll have in-depth impressions in a little bit -- and the title seems to revolve around the sneaking tradition of the franchise -- online hide and seek if you will. In an onstage demonstration, the company showcased how the game will run along with a new team system called SOKKU, which allows you quickly and easily access info on your allies. You'll even be able to see them through walls.

As someone who has stated many times that the Metal Gear Solid series peaked with the first game, I have to admit that that did look pretty fucking good. Sure, I always thought it had some nice visuals, but what does that really mean with Metal Gear solid anyway? In terms of stealth action the Splinter Cell series has far outstripped Metal Gear in almost every aspect I think, but this one looks different.
I'm still not exactly thrilled at the prospect of sitting through an endless amount of gratuitous cinematics, but I may finally have a game I can place alongside the original Metal Gear Solid.

Obviously everything is subjective when you boil it all down, but pointing out that you have the right to your opinion isn't an argument.
Back in a time when voice acting in videogames was something you avoided at all cost, visuals were (arguably) still striving for that sense of realism and immersion we see in many games today, and the stealth genre hadn't seen any really good action in years; Metal Gear Solid was a "HOLY SHIT!!!" of epic proportions. But the formula of the game hasn't aged well.
It's due a lot of credit for reviving the genre but, as I said, in terms of stealth action, Splinter Cell has vastly outstripped the series in every way gameplay wise.
What most people tout as the highlight of the games and/or what sets them apart from the rest is the story, which was so convoluted and contrived in Metal Gear Solid 2 that it felt like a self parody to me. Metal Gear Solid 3 was an improvement, but it was still a farcry from what they pulled off in their first outing.
As I said though, based on that video, it looks like Metal Gear may end up reclaiming its title. Hell, it looked to me like Snake even took a leaf out of Fisher's book.

That was on the second day or so we got the game, maybe even the first. I won overall. Even beating the great Snake4444 (I told ya I was better than him in bigger matches, and still was up until I didn't play anymore. I might even still be)
I played with the best in MGO, including 4444, tea-bagging was good fun.
I played in games with him before he was even known as one of the best. And just to let you in on a little secret, I was better than him in normal matches >.> 1 on 1 he raped all though. I met him on gamefaqs and we all became a little family, we was a whiney bastard though and will never admit I won against him and with him more in a full match than he has beat me.

You do realize that Hideo Kojima is a Splinter Cell fan, right? You do know that he actually once stated "Wouldn't it be great if we could just make Splinter Cell Metal Gear Solid 3?" Anyway, to my point. MGS is the only real sneaking game they made before splinter cell. Splinter cell was the only other that developed into a genre. Whilest splinter cell is more of a realistic sneaking game, MGS is a bit more fictional BUT plausible in a few senses. Some are just whacky all together. Other than splinter cell being a bit more real, it's a wannabe MGS genre. MGS did it first, it won the hearts, it's still the biggest and always will be the biggest stealth game genre ever made.

So all games are just wannabees of the first in their genre? I cant really see much MGS has in common with Splinter cell except that they are both sneaking games. Splinter cell isnt trying to be MGS.
I prefer MGS. First of all I like the atmosphere, humour and storyline (nomatter how farfetched it might be - hey, its a game). I thought Splinter Cell was too liniar whereas in MGS there are lots of ways to pass an area.

To tell you the truth I wasn't that excited for this game but I know that just like every other MGS game it would be fun and definitely worth the buy. However after watching the gameplay video, the game has seems to be a lot better than I expected ( I chuckled when snake rolled in the barrel to knockout those two enemies). The only bad about the game is that I have to till next year to play it, but I guess good things come to those who wait.

Ever heard the saying "popular doesn't mean right"? Well biggest doesn't mean best. And no, it's not just a bit more real. It's actually a hundred times more real, but I digress, because being more real doesn't necessarily mean being a better game.
It's more engaging, more intuitive, and less restrictive than Metal Gear Solid's completely linear approach.
Oh yeah, and you ducked my point. Kojima has gone on record praising the Splinter Cell franchise. The video of Metal Gear Solid 4 shows certain similarities with trademarks of the Splinter Cell franchise(and quite a few new tricks as well, to be fair).
If Splinter Cell is just some wannabe of the Metal Gear franchise, as you so erroneously characterize it, then explain why the guy who makes your favorite game obviously has nothing but respect for it.

I dont know how the Splinter cell series have evolved, since I only played the first game, but I remember it as one of the most linear games I ever played. In MGS there is one goal, but there are mostly multiple ways to cross an area and the areas are often big (especially in MGS3). You can also go to places that doesnt lead directly to your goal to get items and stuff and backtrack to areas you been before.
People have different taste in games, but I believe you are completely wrong when you say that MGS is linear and restrictive whereas Splinter Cell is not.

Agreed. The Metal Gear Solid series, ever since MGS1 for playstation, has never been nearly as linear as Splinter Cell, nor restrictive in the least, as it allows players to be creative with how they approach the game. Hell, in the FIRST stage of Metal Gear Solid, where you're infiltrating the first building, they give you the choice of either knocking out a sleeping guard and going in through a grate on the bottom floor, or sneaking up some outside stairs, taking out a patrolling guard and camera, and infiltrating through a grate in the topmost floor. Not to mention all the hidden items and easter eggs strewn about the games that require backtracking, branching off from the main path, and locating hidden niches to acquire them. Saying the MGS series is linear and restrictive is enough evidence in itself to reveal that one has never played the series.

Do you realize the physical impossibilities of moving objects with your mind? And, sure... Let's assume it is possible... Let's assume a genetically enhanced person gains psychic abilities and a spy has to take him out. It'll be much easier for him to do it if his controller is in the second slot.
To everyone else. I guess I was misinformed, but being able to call that pixel feast of shit a real stealth action game is the dumbest thing I've fuckin heard in a while.
Ah, the moronic logic of "it's outdated, it doesn't count". Sorry, but regardless of the graphics, stealth action is stealth action.
You would have been better off with saying that the Metal Gear series was the first 3D stealth action game... But, you would have still been wrong.
Hell, take a look at the first Metal Gear Solid game. The graphics are terribly outdated, and the textures look like a patchwork mosaic of colors. Outdated?

Giant Bipedal robots are possible, but not in the context they’re used in Metal Gear. Really, strategically speaking, a Metal Gear is probably the most expensive and ridiculously inefficient weapon you could actually create. It makes for a daunting final boss and looks mighty imposing, but there’s no real logical reason for it to even exist.
virtual simulation,
About as plausible as the holodeck, or the construct from the matrix. Don’t expect it anytime in the immediate future.
even the crazy psychic you had to fight with your controller in the second slot.
As I said, loony.
Obviously things such as a bee swarmed man, guy who can dislocate his limbs to climb trees, and a wannabe vampire that doesn't die aren't so plausible at all.
Not to mention cyborg ninjas, a transplanted arm possessing another person, a lady and/or piece of hardware which deflects bullets, raven’s with magical abilities, stealth camouflage, etc.
Besides, trying to point out that there are plausible things in the Metal Gear solid universe is like pointing out plausible things in the Harry Potter universe. The simple fact is, Metal Gear Solid is in no way shape or form plausible.
That’s not a bad thing. Plenty of great games, movies, and books reject that approach, but suggesting that there’s some kind of plausibility in the universe is a statement of sheer lunacy.
Play Chaos theory.
Saying the MGS series is linear and restrictive is enough evidence in itself to reveal that one has never played the series.
Don't go there. I’ve played them all, going all the way back to the original Metal Gear on the MSX. Can you honestly say that?
I think I'm probably done with this thread. Xerosnake doesn't seem to have any intention of letting up and I've no desire to move on to another discussion.
Who cares anyway. Metal Gear Solid IV actually looks badass for once, and I think most of us can agree on that.

Even if you have played them it seems strange to me that you would think of them as linear because thats one of the last things you can say about the series if you ask me. Could you tell what you think is linear in the game and how Splinter Cell does it with less linearity?

You would have been better off with saying that the Metal Gear series was the first 3D stealth action game... But, you would have still been wrong.
So what would be the first than, my friend? Enlighten my thoughts :)

Be my guest, cuz if you don't it'll be the same thing back and forth. I do assure you I am quite sane though.

It's already been mentioned. Tenchu.

Seems to be so, MGS and Tenchu were months apart in release. Only difference is Tenchu turned into a shitty series and fell into shit whilest MGS stands strong even 20 years after it was first released. MGS did it better, and it did it the best >.> THUS EVERYTHING COPIES MGS!!!

Haha, oh, I went there and am already back. *snap snap*
...Okay that was lame, but yes I can honestly say that! Granted, I didn't play the original Metal Gear games until after I had beaten MGS1 for the (literally) 40th time. I was going to bring those old classics up in my original post, but am glad to see you've already played them as well.
And yes, I can agree that MGSIV more than peakes my interest.

Who are you trying to convince here? Your caps lock key does not impress.
A copy of a copy is still a copy of the original. People call stuff GTA clones all the time. The funny thing is, GTA3 was the second game to feature it's style of gameplay. The first one is a little known game called Body Harvest.
It happens all the time. Someone creates a formula that's awesome, but poorly executed. Later, they (or someone else) take that formula and improve upon it. Sometimes someone else simply came up with the idea first.
Of course, I'm getting a bit off the subject here. You're totally missing my point.
Calling Splinter Cell a copy of MGS is about as accurate as calling any other game a copy of Pong, since Pong is the first video game (well, not technically, but the other one was only created on a single computer). Splinter Cell does it's own thing. Sure, both Splinter Cell and MGS have stealth and action, both have government conspiracies, both have... guns? people? badguys?
Again, you'd be more accurate calling Splinter Cell a clone of Thief, since Thief was the first one that encorporated shadows into stealth.
But you're not about being accurate are you? You're simply about regurgitating the same thing you've said before over and over again. It's not convincing anyone. Take your time before you say something. Do a little research. Think about what you're going to say, and ask yourself, "Does this make sense? Am I making a point? Will I sound stupid?"

Can't we just agree that both MGS and SC are great games?

Yes they are.... but MGS is still better.

I just downloaded the video today off of the PSN and I can't help but be impressed. The video itself makes me want to go through and play the previous games again. As a matter of fact, I think I'll do that.
