Now, Microsoft has seen fit to reduce the price of its most expensive accessory for the Xbox 360. Effective August 1, the HD DVD add-on will retail for $179 USD.That's just $20 there, but from the same site,
http://www.dailytech.com/Report+Xbox+360+to+Shed+50+in+August/article8187.htm
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Microsoft will cut the price of the Xbox 360 by $50 early next month. The report noted that its sources did not indicate if the $50 cut would apply to just certain Xbox 360 SKUs or across the entire line.
One analyst forecasted that Microsoft would announce at E3 that the $299 Core system would drop to $249, the $399 Premium down to $349, and the $479 Elite to $399. Although Microsoft showed no movement on pricing at its E3 conference, industry onlookers continue to expect that a price drop to happen before the holiday season.
That's $580 for the Elite system + HD-DVD drive, as apposed to the current $680 for the two.

Maybe instead of really dropping the price they could drop a price on a model and then discontinue it, then make a new model at the same price. And make that the only model available. Wouldn't that be stupid of them!

That would be a desperate attempt by them to sell systems. I don't think they'd ever have to resort to that, since the console can be used for more than just HD movies and 3D chat rooms. Thank God for games, huh?

I'm really thinking about getting an HD-DVD player add-on now. Especially since you get 5 movies if you buy it in august-september. Somebody tell me why I should or shouldn't get one.

Oh god, Sony is fucking ridicolous but at least they do make price drops. They just suck at filling in the gaps.
20gig discontinued + replaced with 60gig for 499$ SWEET!!!
I wonder what the 60 gig is getting in return!!!
Oh yea, 80 gigs ~.~; What the fuck.
If they tried to compete with 360, they would've made 120 or more gigs. Not to mention how stupid the price is now, even though it's a better deal. When it was the 20 and 60 gig, there was a 40 gig difference between the 100. Now there's a 20 gig difference, it's bullshit if you think about it.

The best reason to get one is because it's the cheapest HD player you can get. If you have a CPU or video card that supports HD, you can plug the player into your PC and watch HD movies right there, if you don't have the 360.
And comparing HD to SD is like comparing a movie theater to youtube. Maybe not as drastic, but you get the picture.

I read a review about it in EGM, they said for the price it is okay. They said as compared to other more exspensive HD-DVD players it wasn't very good, but of course those are more pricey.

I can't wait for MGS4 to get an official release date. Ebay will be my friend for a Ps3.

HD DVD hardware sales were up 37 percent from Q1 to Q2 2007, while software sales experienced a 20 percent increase in growth.....Blu-ray hardware sales saw a 27 percent decline from Q1 to Q2, and Blu-ray software sales were down 5 percent.
It's way too early to tell that.

3 of those are the same story written 3 different times. The other is just news of a new BluRay player being released.
But for every news story you can find saying BluRay will win the format war, there's another one saying HD-DVD will win. I'm just too lazy to find 3 other sources.
As for me, I'm sticking with just DVD and illegal movie downloads until HVDs are released, or something is released that can hold a UHD movie.

Yeah, the reasons for my delay in picking up the HD-DVD player are the price and the uncertainty of the format. If more studios keep going neutral, that would help. and the 5 free movies would help too. I just know that if I get one, it'll lose the format war.

I remember the original Xbox costing less than the ps2 did at one point and it came out a year later and included a game. So they were definitely generous with the original and now they are talking about a price drop after it hasn't even been 2 years and they are still not making any money off of them. Not to mention it is already about $200 cheaper than the PS3 and is just as powerful, but they also have handed out 3 year extended warranty's to everyone for free, what a bunch of assholes.
