I can agree with you on Jimi, he can play the guitar like no other. From him i would branch out to Bob Marley, Ben harper, and Martin Sexton

I like their style. Coldplay stands out, same for radiohead

Yeah Radiohead does..Coldplay as well. Coldplay especially is just extremely talented. I don't own their cd, but i've heard most of the songs on it, and i've got to say-its good stuff.

I like Rush and Prince, but I don't think either is the best ever. that is too hard to define.

Mozart or Beethoven haven't featured too strongly now have they.

If we are using the key words...... musician and all time.

I prefer listening to Beatles, Paul Simon and Cold Play, etc. ... but if we are talking pure genius and talent then It's got to be the top two for me.

i would definately say the beatles, but not as a whole. i dont think ringo star was as amazing compared other drummers as paul and john were compared to other writers. the fact that john and paul could play basically whatever instrument they wanted, and be good at it is just amazing. they are my choice becasue of the way they changed music forever.

How bout real musicians. This thread is abuot Musicians of All Time.

My first would definitley be Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. He was declared the most musicly talented person to ever roam the earth. That counts for something.

Fucking Beethoven. He started the Romantic Era of music. That means something.

Claude Debussy. French Expressionism. Creator of the whole tone scale and movement in parallel fifths.

How bout Leonin and Perotin. First known writers of music ever. Gregorian chant. Creators of primitive musical notes known as "neumes".

All those guys brought something to music. None of the others did.

And if you think people like Miles Davis didn't do anything for music you should be slapped in the face.

1. Led Zeppelin - very talented, good songs (Such as Black Dog, Achillies Last Stand, etc.)
2. The Beatles - lots of rememberable (sp) songs, such as Birthday and Day Tripper.
3. Pink Floyd - very creative band, lots of good songs. But The Wall is better than DSOM.

1) Jimi Hendrix
2) Jimmy Page
3) Eric Clapton
4) John Frusciante
5) Slash

All of these just happen to be guitarists but they have influenced music far more than any other and all of which have their own unique style. Considering Hendrix never read music or knew much theory atall to create the music he did he was a damn good musiscian.

In regards to all time you have to list Bach and Mozart among countless others throughout the centuries. As far as the pop rock era which officially started in 1955 there's the Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Band, The Byrds, Coletrain, Miles Davis ectt It's a long list!

That's a toughie...I mean...I guess we're talking musicians within this century, so I'll go with...

1900-1950:
- Miles Davis for inventing fusion and giving jazz music a total overhaul.
* I know -- he didn't do the fusion stuff till later, but still, he is of this era.
- Scott Joplin for adapting ragtime and vaudeville from Chopin etudes.
- JJ Johnson because he's the greatest jazz trombone player to ever exist.

1951-Now:
- Eric Clapton because of Cream, and he's a great songwriter and player.
- Prince because he writes, moves, sings, and plays about every instrument.
- Michael Jackson because he *was* a true natural talent with presence, dance, and singing.

Musicians= Someone who plays an instrument

He could have been more blunt and said something like "Munky from Korn or Fieldy from Korn"

i dont think i can really answer in this thread, because it would haev to depend on the catagory, every musician is better then the other in my opinion. Iam VERY open minded when it comes to music, i listen to everything. From Tupac, to Motazrt, To Korn ( best rock band in my opinion), John kicks ass, to bob marley the king, to Micheal Jackson, i think the old MJ was pretty kick ass.

Like i said, SO many talented musicians i cant realyl say i have a favorite.

"Everyone who is goes down in history is overrated...for they are human beings, like you and me, prolly dont think they deserve as much attention as they are getting." -Me

That's mostly because people just like the person/s because they're "old school" (or whatever you want to call it) and people just say they like them (most of the time, they've never heard the musician) because all of their friends like them, being into old music has become a fad.

And I don't really get any attention. -Me too

Oh, and how the hell can u put Kurt Cobain???????
The guy couldn't play the guitar worth shit, he could not write lyrics at all, and he could not write solos or many good riffs at all. He is by far one of the worst musicians ever. I hope he roughts in hell.

Hah, Dozzi! I just noticed this post! I guess I must've missed this the first time or I would've responded to it.

I just wanted to clear some stuff up for you since you seem pretty into classical music.

As far as Beethoven goes, he came up with ideas which were widely used in the Romantic period. He got the ball rolling, but the people who really segued into it were the "Beethoven trifecta" -- Schubert, Schumann and Mendelssohn. Given Beethoven implemented so many things which are even still common (use of extentions, inclusion of trombones into orchestra, on and on...) but he's still considered classical.

As for the Leonin/Perotin comment, the oldest written music that has a name attached to it was by Hildegard of Bingen. Leonin and Perotin were part of the Notre Dame school and wrote 30 or 40 years after she did. She was actually neuming before them, but generic texts seem to enjoy giving them the credit for chant notation even though it's basically been around for thousands of years.

I'd also like to add that on top of inventing the whole tone scale and breaking the evil outlook on non-chord tones and parallel motion, Debussey was a badass mofo. He got laughed out of Paris Conservatory three times before one of the more open-minded professors realized how innovative he actually was. But seriously...he went into the conservatory on four separate occasions with the exact same thing to show. That's ballsy.

One more person you should add to your list though is Schoenberg and the "second Vienna school" composers (Webern & Berg.) They brought twelve-tone technique and serialism into this world and made way for a supernova of musical expansion in the 20th century, from Igor Stravinsky's "wrong-note" chordal system to Charles Ives's general insanity to John Adams/Steve Reich's minimalist techniques.

And I agree with you totally. These guys were *really* the ones who brought something to music. And created it.
