Boy, 5, strangled by electric window (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/08/17/ncar117.xml)

A five year old boy died after his head became trapped in a car’s electric window while he was playing alone in the car.

The youngster, who was named by neighbours as Michael Dury, from Croydon, South London, had only been left in the car for a few minutes when he accidentally strangled himself.

His mother, Wendy Broughton, had parked the family car outside their home in New Addington, Croydon, Surrey, but left the engine running, meaning the electrics were still working.

Michael began playing with the buttons on the door and managed to activate one of the windows which moved upwards and trapped his neck between the frame.

He was rushed to the nearby St Georges Hospital, Tooting while paramedics tried in vain to resuscitate him in the ambulance. Despite their attempts he was pronounced dead on arrival to the hospital.

Neighbour John Peters, who lives on Dunley Drive, New Addington, close to the family’s house, said: "We are all very sad. Our thoughts are with them at this time. It’s a big shock."

Another neighbour who lives on the same road said: "This is an absolute tragedy. We can’t believe it. He was just playing with the electric window as kids do when they are left alone in a car.

"He just kept pressing up and the window closed on his neck and he was strangled. It’s is so sad for the family."

A spokesman for the Met police said: "The incident is being treated as a sudden death. A five-year-old boy was playing in the family car when his head became trapped in the window.

"Police are providing support for the family and will prepare a report for the coroner in due course."

A spokesman for the London Ambulance service said: "We were called at 2.30pm to Dunley Drive in New Addington in Croydon. We sent one fast response car, an air ambulance, one ground ambulance and an officer to the scene.

"The crew treated one patient, a five-year-old boy, and worked to resuscitate him on the way to St George’s Hospital by ground ambulance."

A postmortem examination will be held on August 21 at Queen Mary’s Hospital and an inquest will be opened at Croydon Coroner’s Court on August 23.

Well its dog eat dog world, too bad the electric window has bigger teeth.

I got my head, (not my neck), stuck in an electric window in a car when I was younger. I also got it stuck in the railings on the steps at my grandparents' house. And I got it stuck when I fell between my bed and wall. And I got it stuck in the woodwork of the dining room chairs. And I fell headfirst into a post-hole and got stuck. I get it stuck in sweaters all the time, and don't even ask me to wear a turtle neck.

Not worthy of the darwin award, too young and it's an easy mistake.

Newer cars have saftey features that prevent that sort of thing.

I don't expect 5 year olds to know how that stuff works. That kid probably still wets his bed.
Not natural selection, just sad.

If it were natural selection the parents would be killed, not a fucking 5 year old.

Urm ... it doesn't work like that ...

See the weakest children die off, while the strongest live on. Then when the strong have their children, the weakest of them die off and the strongest grow up and have more children etc etc

Not so much natural selection as an unfortunate set of circumstances.

Unless the car happens to be part of the natural selection in which case it loses because all cars are eventually bound for being caged in a prison via a historic museum or a car collector or the scrapyard.

No one wins.

Well, sort of... natural selection means that the weakest individuals die off before they have a chance to reproduce. They don't necessarily have to be kids when they die. Then, on the flip side, the stronger individuals survive to pass on the genes that made them stronger.

Of course, in this case it's just an accident and nothing to do with genetics.

Natural selection doesn't apply in the least bit in our society. Instead of allowing the weak to die off we nuture and care for them. Also, in no way (that we can know) is this boys genetics any less favorable than yours or mine. Hes a child. At the age of 5, a human is in no way capable of caring for himself. He was left alone and unfortunatly a tragic accident occured. In fact at that age I would say curiosity is a very favorable trait to posses, although occasionaly curosity will kill the cat.

The problem with your statement is that weak human children rarely die off, as they are to be cared for until they reach an age of maturity.

that pretty much sums it up

Natural Selection is debatable

all The violent prisoners would roam free as warriors and Warlords in a society were to broad sword sings and the strong take what they want:lol:

This thread is making me wonder - if natural selection is irrelevant to our society, where is the human race headed?
We have ramps for wheelchairs, brail for the blind, extra-wide doors for the fat...
I think evolution will still continue, just at a very slow rate.

Yeah, but I don't really find it that funny when children are killed. The "joke" would apply to an adult, not a 5 year old.

lol I don't think car windows are a sufficient enough stressor to qualify for natural selection. If hoards of kids were exposed to the neck crushing predator called the car window on a daily basis like a stalking beast on the African Savannah, I'd say it was a stressor for natural selection.

US and Japanese auto makers won't do it, but I'm sure Chinese cars of the future will have the child eating feature, a baby eating feature too in the glove compartment.
