I listen to some jazz, mostly local stuff that my guitar teacher is getting me into though, I try to listen to a wide veriety of music but usually just end up listening to classic rock or metal. Jazz, classical, and other different styles of music just arent as exciting to me

I like Jazz, although I'm really new to it. I only have stuff by Miles Davis so far.

My dad has a mix CD he made with Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, etc and I liked it, so that kinda hooked me onto it.

Miles Davis is a good starting point. Chances are u have the CD "Kind of Blue." I got it for Christmas a year ago and thus discovered Jazz. If you like slower paced Jazz u should listen to Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, and Duke Ellington. Faster paced is Coltrane ("Giant Steps" is a good CD), Dizzy Gillespie, and "Birdland 1951" by Miles Davis. I hope these reccomendations can help you.

wow, i respect you, rep points for you. Jazz is the heart of all of the music we listen to today. The greats such as dizzy, miles, coltrane, monk, dexter gordon, charlie parker, louis armstrong, duke ellington, count basie, art blakey, dave brubeck, wycleff gordon, charlie christian, joe pass, etc etc etc.

that is where it is at my friends!

i'm big into coltrane and davis like most who have posted here, but another guy you should check out is ornette coleman. the guy is genius. it's a little more 'out there' than the standards played by davis and coltrane during the bulk of their careers.

a few others:

sonny rollins
dave brubeck
coleman hawkins
chick corea
sonny criss

it's a huge world and there's lots to listen to.

Yeah, Dave Brubreck! That was the other guy on my dad's compilation CD... just couldn't remember his name.

I don't have any jazz cd's but I like jazz. I also play the trombone at my community college (started playing about 8 years) and we play a lot of jazz tunes (as well as blues and latin). ImTheBestPerson, I agree with you about trying to widen my mood of music. I try getting myself listening to jazz and some classical but I end out listening to rock and dance/eletronica and buying those cd's as well.
