It's a shame that such an awful RTS is known much more now for it's not-so-great-but-better-than-the-game-itself mod. Boo, Blizzard. Boo.

Are you a retard? WC3 is one of the best RTS games to date.

No, no it's not. It's based around individual unit micromanagement, which is a completely ridiculous concept. The unit variety is shaky at best, and you can usually only win with 1 or two groups of units. It's one of the most simplistic and ridiculous RTSes ever, and the concept of "creeping" is retardedly thrown into the game, making it a game based on who's hero is more powerful. Fuck that, that's a bad RPG.

Dota is/was more popular than the actual game.

no starcraft is one of the best RTS to date, maybe u got confused
WC3 was a bad game for RTS, IF u only want RTS in your RTS. It's my thought that the hero concept in warcraft was on created in order to bridge some type of gap between Warcraft the RTS to Wolrd of Warcraft. Without the heros than it's a game based loosely on and RTS, with the heroes it makes more sense that there would be large heroes roaming about. Regardless, Dota is a bright spot for WC3.

Opinions, opinions. I think WC3 is one of the best RTS games of all time. I still fucking play it since it came out, thats like what 4 years or more? It has the hero system that every RTS has copied, RPG elements that worked perfectly in the game's story and gameplay, and a superb map editor with incredible scripting capabilities. The game is redicilously balanced, has incredible artwork (Blizzard always is the best here) that STILL is aesthetically pleasing even with its 300 poly characters. Opinions, opinions!
It's odd however that you mention Starcraft. I absolutely hate Startcraft, I don't find it any fun at all. However I do realize that it is still religion in Korea and is one of the greatest games of all time. That's where I am different from you two, I can understand what makes a game great even if I don't like it.
I'm glad others like myself also dislike WC3, what a poor man's RTS.

one is an RTS, the other is an RTS with RPG aspects, i like my RPGs to be RPGs and my RTS to be RTS don't combine the 2!

Is this where you guys bring up some obscure, pseudo-history-nerd, roman RTS which blows?
I never said anything about WC3. DotA is awesome. That is that.

You're confusing balance with speed. It has balance in the fact that you do the same exact thing with the 3\4 races. Creep, build, mass attack. There is no alternative.
Let me explain an RTS to you. Because if you think WC3 is a grea game, that's fine, but don't call it an RTS:
In every RTS that exists. I have a multitude of options. My general tactic in any RTS is to set up a siege barrier guarding various resources with grunts in fron of it. Timoshenko's gambit. A solid military strategy, and it is usually decently effective.
In Any RTS but WC3, this is possible. This is because WC3 relies on a single or 2 groups of units. You can't build that many to begin with, and they are impossible to pump out in any sort of speedy fashion. Mainly WC3 boils down to who can control single units faster, and whoever has more experience with hotkeys, wins.
In anything but WC3, I can build siege units. Not like the god-awful Ballista or whatever the fuck awful excuse the other races have, but something that can actually keep swarms of ground units at bay. I never worry about hero units, because usually enough ground units in front of my artillery but out of range of their barrage counter-acts them. Heros in other RTS games are nowhere near as important as in WC3, because you can't possibly win the game without a hero unless you are a hotkey god, or very lucky.
I've noticed a dreaded pattern in Warcraft 3 where most game are decided by who has a level 2 HQ first. That's absolutely ridiculous. This game is a toy RTS if anything near the genre, fused with an all-too-random and overpowered Items system based on killing monsters that have nothing to do with your objective but are needed to make your hero even stronger. Bogus. Warcraft 3 tried to bring something new to the time-honored RTS genre, and it failed, because you can't make a genre better when you don't understand it in the frst place.
Ever played Act of War? Company of Heroes? These games introduce sound strategies that affect the game on a global level, not a bunch of cannon fodder for your heros to unleash game-winning abilities. They should have made this game exactly what people use it for today in the first place: DotA. I can think of no better way to mod this awful RTS into something playable.
This doesn't even count as an opinion. In every way, WC3 fails as any sort of Real-Time Strategy, because the strategies, 90% of the time, are Creep, Mass Units, Attack. Also, if you think massing units and then attacking is the only viable strategy in RTS gaming, you are sorely mistaken. Blizzard made Warcraft for people that wanted nothing but small, fast skirmishes and didn't want to take the time formulating a strategy like in Warcraft 2 and Starcraft. It's a game of pure melee combat, non stop. Except for the beginning when you kill arbitrary monsters for "items" that make or break the whole game.
God I hate Warcraft 3. As an RTS. As a pure mindless battle game, it's fantastic.
