Hey guys,

As you know I've been a long time 360 owner and love it. I got up one day to play and got the dreaded red lights, every time I turn it on. So I researched a bit and found out the most common ways to fix it at home are damaging to your xbox and not very effective (towel method or the blow dryer method).

Just making this now because I will be making a video tutorial on how to fix your 360 in a non-damaging and effective way.

The reason I'm making this thread now is to save you guys time by sending them in for repair.

My disc drive has been having problems... sometimes it won't work and will come up with a "disc read error" as the game loads. Other times it will just stop randomly in the game with the disc read error screen.

It seems to happen in spasms and more often with certain discs, too... sometimes I can play GHII, but then sometimes I can't without getting the error screen the first few times. Any idea on what the problem could be? Microsoft is shipping me a box to send it to them in... should I just get a new one?

That was happening with my first GoW disc, but I went back and replaced it and it was fine.

I heard they put this weird oil coating on the bottom of discs, which interferes with the reader, that needs time to come off.

I see the 3 red lights is because of hardware failure since the motherboard overheats and morphs itself. What if you lay the 360 down horizontally, with at least a foot away from everything else on the floor, with the power brick the same? Would it stay cool enough?

Oh and a quick fix for some of you guys, since I had this. After lightning hit our house, my 360 came up as 3 red lights. After tinkering with the power thing for a while, I tried putting the plug straight into the wall as opposed to a surge protector, and it works fine now.

what's the deal with getting it fixed on warranty? do you have to send it in with the hard drive? do you lose your saved games/profiles?

They ask you to just send the console, you keep the HD.

X-Clamp Fix. Takes 20 minutes, at home, is safe and will never break again.

Ok guys, Bump!

I have filmed the whole x-clamp fix in detail and all I need to do is put it all together.

Shouldn't be too long, maybe a week (I'm busy).

Just a warning so that people don't send their 360s into Microsoft for a month or two.

theres another way to keep your xbox running, but its guaranteed evewntual death, but you wanna squeeze every bit of life out of the xbox. you have to wrap it in towels and let it warm up, and it apparently works. but cut the bullshit, get a repaired xbox and 1 month of xbox live free. heh

I'm probably going to get flamed for this, but seriously, if people have to figure out ways to fix a piece of electronics that they paid 300-400 dollars on, then there is something sadly wrong with the production process of said electronic device.

I have a 360, and yes I also love it, and yes I have gotten RRoD. When people have to be creative and fix it themselves because of a failure (or failures), there is something wrong.

Wait you can remove your 360 HDD without voiding teh warranty?

What kinda HDD does it use (2.5", sata?), what speed (standard)?

Heh. I just feel the back of the thing every once in a while and open a window to the fucking freezing air if I feel it getting hot. I think it actually cools the bastard down. Summer might be a problem though.

But for future reference, if Microsoft hadnt sorted out the hardware on the batch mine came from and it breaks, how do I go about returning it to get repaired? I am a noob faggot at warranties and that shit.

I don't know if you know this but the HD is external. You can easily just pull it off.

Argh, don't ever use the towel trick. It's the lazy and risky way of fixing it for a short period of time.
