Messed up halo 3 ending? *spoiler*

What in the fuck happened?

In the end we blow up ring, jump onto that ship. As taking off Master Chief almost falls out, he crawls back and sits on the other side of the little control center as to not fall out. Cortana says a goodbye if they don't make it, chief says "we'll make it" and then the screen goes white and immediately goes to the scene where they're paying their dues. The general shakes the arbiters hand and says "I can't believe he's gone" or something along those lines. Arbiter goes home I assume, blah blah the end.

What the fuck? Did the game skip over a huge massive scene? What the fuck happened to the chief? If that's the ending it's the worst ending of any game I've ever played

Okay. I'll explain it. Again.

Master Chief gets on the ship, which takes off and doesn't quite make it through the jump hole. The Arbiters half of the ship makes it through, and returns to Earth, where a memorial is being held. People think the Chief is dead, but he's floating in deep space with Cortana, in a semi-functional ship-half. He climbs into a cryo-tube and tells Cortana to wake him when he's needed. If beaten on legendary, you'll see the ship floating towards a planet. The planet is a shielded planet, just like the ones the forunners escaped to, away from the flood. This shows that something else is going to be done with the Halo series, whatever it may be.

I feel so empty inside over this game today simply because of that ending, I just can't get over how unfulfilling it was.

i thought that ending was a bit abrupt, i mean youd think he would take a shower ,get a bite to eat, heck take a shit after all that but noooo, he just goes into cryo like a terminator or something, soooo unrealistic....!!!!

As I said in the other thread, my biggest problem with the ending by far wasn't the ending itself...but rather the unfulfilled promise it represented. Bungie literally said that this was going to be their "Return of the King", but the ending resembled something more like Matrix: Revolutions, or POTC: At Worlds End. It tries to tie up the most crucial plot lines whilst still leaving the franchise wide open for future installments, and in that it succeeds.
It's not an ending. It's simply the next chapter in a growing franchise...which is kind of lame. I'm too enthralled in the Halo mythos to not keep reading/playing/watching whatever else they put out there...but as a die hard Halo fanatic even I feel a little cheated.
But hey...at least they didn't show his face, and as already stated, the game itself was fucking epic.

Also, I think the Shield world is probably the core that 343 saw when he remarked about the nature of installation 00 during one of the cutscenes, and for those you who read the books, I'm betting the survivors of Ghosts of Onyx are there as well.
Man, in terms of luck Chief sure can give Harry Potter a run for his money. :)
