I think we had a ska thread a while back, but I think we should keep this on up. Just post anything ska in here. Bands, videos, album comments, etc.
Personally, I am just starting to get a little bit into ska. The only band I have listened to extensively is Streetlight Manifesto, and they're awesome (seeing them Tuesday). So, does anyone have any band suggestions for me? I need to branch out a little bit more.

Streetlight Manifesto is so good.
Hell, Tomas Kalnoky (of Streetlight, Catch 22) is just an amazing musician. I suggest you guys all check out Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution. That's one of Kalnoky's side-projects. Think Streetlight but completely acoustic.

The new Streetlight Manifesto is very very good. I suggest getting that. I like ska, but it isn't my favorite genre. However, Streetlight may be my favorite band.

I cant believe nobody has mentioned The Specials yet.... FOR SHAME!
How can you have a Ska thread and not mention the original and the best Ska bands like The Specials, The Beat or Madness?
I prefer all the proper UK Ska from back in the day (70s and 80s), I might be wrong from admittedly only hearing a few modern American Ska tunes but to me American Ska has more aggresive rock undertones as opposed to the UK stuff which is more laid back and has a reggae feel to it.
Oh theres a mint Ska band from New Zealand that a girl on Myspace introduced me to, they are called The WBC, check out their Myspace page, they are pretty good.

Damn. They played at Shadows Bar (Auckland Uni student bar) on the 8th and I happened to be there on the 9th having a drink with mates. Oh well, I was still able to see a pretty cool reggae band.

I prefer the traditional ska, which orginated in Jamaica in the 60's. Also known as the real ska.
The Godfathers - This is a good place to start.
Laurel Aitken
Skatalites
Prince Buster
Desmond Dekker
The Gaylads
Alton Ellis
Heres a few modern bands that keep that traditional sound of the 60's
The Slackers
The Aggrolites (more reggae, but w/e)
Hepcat

Well, I saw Streetlight last night. Unfortunately, Suburban Legends was not there (van stolen in Philadelphia, estimated $80,000 in equipment). The Stitch Up was great, however, and played both MU330 songs and songs of their own.
Streetlight was simply amazing; there's not much more I can say about it. They had a nice long set list, containing songs off all three of their albums, and some BOTAR songs.

I went to see Less Than Jake on their '6 albums in 6 nights' tour recently. I happened to go on the Pezcore night. Ideally I'd have got the Losing Streak or Hello Rockview nights but I had no room to complain as it was simply fantastic.
In other news, I'm estatic that The Mighty Mighty Bosstones appear to be reforming and can only hope for them to visit the UK if they do indeed re-form.
Been waiting for a long time now for RBF to announce a UK tour, its been too long.
Recently I've been listening to a lot of Mustard Plug and I may or may not have Demonoided their newest album. :uhoh:

yea if you wanna get into ska, Streetlight isnt the best band to start with, although they are fucking great.
You can check out some Jamaican bands from the '60s. I believe a number of 'em have already been mentioned. They're considered to be the 1st wave. Basically, good stuff that has a very retro sound to it. Not into it too much personally, tho.
2nd wave would be all the British bands, also already mentioned, like the specials, madness, the english beat etc. The sound is crispier and in some songs, faster. Lots of good stuff.
3rd wave is punk-based (all the Catch 22's and Big D And The Kids Tables). I guess streetlight is 3rd wave, although they're driftin away from the ska sound. My favorite band.
So basically if you want:
Fast, crisp punk sound:
Big D and The Kids Table
Suicide Machines
Catch 22
Voodoo Glow Skulls
Reel Big Fish
Raw, punkish sound:
Assorted Jellybeans
Operation Ivy
Modern-trad, smooth, ear pleasing ska sound:
Go Jimmy Go
Deal's Gone Bad
Westbound Train
The Debonairs
The Aggrolites (reggae that makes you wanna jump around)

Less Than Jake is real easy to get in to. The Suicide Machines are great, so is Mustard Plug.
Also, download 'Magic Flower' by Warsaw. Word.
And Goldfinger kicks ass.

So all of you guys are referring to the Ska/punk fusion of the 90s, right? There's "real" ska and then there's all the fusion. I grew up on punk/ska, actually so i'm pretty fond of it.
