My second 360 did something crazy just now. Mid-gaming the screen locked up and went all fuzzy with a horrible screeching sound. Turned it off and on and it seemed to be ok, but I'm sure it might be on its way out.
Nice going, Microsoft.
Edit: Now it's totally fucked.

Actually it's sitting on top of a desk on it's own away from the tv, with the power supply as far away as the cable allows.

if you have a wired controller plug it into the usb port and hold the guide button when its off and it might start itself back up its weird but it worked when I had the RROD once and ive never had it since

^^^Having it on the carpet under a cable box? It will definitly overheat quicker. I also heard that having it directly on carpet is bad because carpet fibers can get inside and mess shit up.
to the OP: Join the club, man. Im on my 3rd xbox. Im glad i bought the Best Buy warranty so i dont have to mail it in and wait a month each time.

I realize the 360 is the best for your money, but shit, the quality seems horrible. They sure took their sweet ass time in making a stable console too.
you know what sucks even more about the 360 (dont worry, i have one and a i love it, but the bitch is a bitch!) is that those RROD could mean anything, from the Motherboard melting, to your USB cable detector on the front being loose.
Case in point, I will get the RROD almost every other day when i first boot it up, then i turn it off, then turn it back on and it will be okay. Problem is, I get disconnected from Xbox Live randomly so im thinking my internal internet thing is screwed up!

When i first got my 360, it kept shutting off on me for no reason, probably overheating. I sold it, then got a ps3 and never had a problem with it since i got it. No overheating, nothing. I understand that it doesn't have as many games as the 360 but the majority of games today are multi platform. Chances are the games you've been enjoying on the 360 (excluding halo 3) will be available on the ps3. Also they're definitely kickin in production on more exclusive titles.

They should have at least some tolerance for it. The Xbox 360 is poorly made when it overheats when "sitting on top of a desk on it's own away from the tv, with the power supply as far away as the cable allows."
There's no excuse for the amount of failed consoles Microsoft hurriedly put out.
I wonder how long one of those "new" ones will last? 2 years at the most? Microsoft should give lifetime warranties for the fuckers.

I have never had a problem with mine, a guy from work has had 3 consoles replaced so far.... but Microsoft dont charge you to fix them & the warrenty starts over again when it gets replaced AND the third time he got a free controller sent back with the console.
PS3 may work better but with what? Blu Rays? .... all the games are fucking crap except for the ones that have been released in the last two months.

Meh, if I get a console I'll get the 360, as shitty as it is that they are giving problems, the 360 really has the best games, well in my opinion.
The wii has more childish games, though I love mario, and nintendo's other favorites the wii is still more aimed towards kiddish games.
The ps3, though its flashy, I mainly see them focusing on anime rpg and sport games, mostly Japanese favorites, can't blame them though.
But the 360 seems to be more of a gamers console, its got nice specs, Xbox live is really nice, and they have more gamer type games, but anyways this probably doesn't make sense, so in summery i think the 360 is better even though it has its problems.

My 360 actually has never had a problem and only crashed once whilst playing saints row, even if it had done it wouldve been fixed free of charge and i could still play all the good games, now if PS3 had any good games to even care about it breaking, it might not be as useless as it is atm.

Relating one's personal experience....and stating that all PS3's never break down are two different things....idiot
Owning both a PS3 and a 360 I can safely say that the PS3 was the wiser purchase....reasons...
1.) Yes the 360 has more games...but aside from Gears and Halo...I really don't care for the others...Bioshock was overrated and Pinata is just gay...infact it seems the funnest games are the ones that are multiplatform
2.) My Blu-ray's movies plays clearer on the same TV than my one HD-DVD disc on this busto ass HD-DVD player ....which from what I learned is like the bastard child of HD-DVD players thanks Microsoft!!!!!
3.) My friggin 360 account keeps going back to Silver status so I have to keep calling microsoft to get them to fix it....while my FREE PS3 connection runs flawlessly.
4.) Though Halo is awesome online...I can't get over trying to level up in prestige mode in COD4....no comparison and so since the PS3's button configuration just feels so much more natural for the game...its gravy
5.) My PS3 stays on 24/7 incased in my living room entertainment setup ...which is all black and silver so it looks great and for some reason even enclosed as so never overheats....
6.) My 360 has overheated twice on its own....the first time I had to pay to get it fixed.....than was offered a coupon for more microsoft crap after the warranty came out to make up for it....my second console came back and within two days had the rings of death...took 5 weeks to get it back!! I should be comped free online time to make up for that crap...ontop of that the friggin 360 sits on a glass table far from the ground and other electronics ...in the open...an eyesore for everyone to see
7.) My third console had a fucked up fan so it ran loud as hell and kept "whirring" so I put it in my cased setup with the PS3...turned both on and whammo ps3 killed it...thanks youtube video for the idea =)
8.) Blu-ray movies are 5 dollars cheaper the HDDVD
9.) Running Tvshack in the browser of my ps3 = free movie goodness on my bigscreen without having to waste time to burn them
10.) The wireless that came with the PS3 works so much better than the wireless that I had to buy for the 360..which always loses connection and has forced me to keep the 360 wired for connection ><
................
Allthough my PS3 controllers are way to sensitive and don't feel as sturdy as the 360's .........also marketplace is brilliant while the ps3store is booboo
..........Notice how I didn't say ...oh well the ps3 has tons of great games coming...or home will rock.......
no from personal experience my 360 blows.....and the PS3 has just been a better buy....also just from accessories my 360 has managed to run up higher in total cost than the ps3 ..........that is all

I am really inclined to agree with you. I currently have a 360, and have only had 1 freeze up in approximately 6 months. But I went out to buy a game the other night, and noticed that none of the 360 exclusives really enticed me. Really, the only reason that I wanted a 360 was because of alot of people telling me to get that over the PS3 because of the amount of titles, and the slight price difference.
Not that I regret getting my 360, but it seems like PS3 would have been the wiser investment for a couple of reasons:
1) As was mentioned before, wireless internet connectivity comes standard with PS3. I believe for the 360 adapter, it costs around 100 bucks. Do the math. Buying that adapter and the 360 would cost just as much as just buying the PS3.
2) PS3 may have failures, but I can guarantee that the failure rate is nowhere near as high as the 360. I'm afraid that any day my 360 could take a crap on me. For as many good titles as it has and as great of a system as it is, widespread hardware failures like those are just unexcusable.
I don't know if any of you guys had PS2's, but I have had mine almost since its launch, and that thing is still going strong. I have had absolutely NO problems with it. So I am more inclined to believe that Sony has built a more dependable product.
3) Also as was mentioned before, most of the epic games that are being released are multiplatform. Honestly, and this is just my opinion, 360 exclusives like Halo 3 are VASTLY overrated. Of course there are some exceptions. But when I see games like Socom: Confrontation for the PS3, I wanna just go trade in my 360 and get my hands on a PS3.

Buy the ps3 for one game? People look for a fun and exciting gaming system, you can tack on all those add-ons; but no matter how many stupid add-ons you put on a piece of shit, you still have a piece of shit. The 360 is what people will buy over a ps3 because of games and a better online. So far the ps3 vs 360 is like the psp vs ds; people will choose the ds over the psp for games.

Well when you think about it, people bought the 360 mainly for halo 3. I don't know why 360 fan boys get this misconception that there's only like 5 games existing for the PS3. The 360 might have a few more games but the majority of games released currently are multi platform, that includes Call of Duty 4 which people agree is way more fun than halo 3. Online? I'd rather not pay $50. When playstation home is released, it's going to make xbox live pale in comparison. You can look at your 2d interface and stats all you like, but its going to be nothing compared to a 3d virtual world of social interaction and gaming.
Also, in the game category, the PSP clearly owns the DS, especially with the PSX emulator. No amount of DS games can beat the classics of PSX like FF VII, FF VIII, FF IX, MGS, Chrono Cross-there's too many to name. People who buy DS's are those who are too dumb to fully utilize the functionalities of the PSP. The PSP only lacks games if you don't know how to use it.

I modded my psp, it emulates all systems ps1 and below; I have iso's and all the other stupid shit. It still spends most of it's time as a paper weight. And sales of the psp and ds say different. And a 3d chat room; wow, so much fun, I can't hold it in. And you are clearly ignorant if you think people bought 360s only for halo. And yes, there are barely any games on the ps3 to make it worth buying it.

i used to own all three consoles. but then eventually the whole paperweight thing comes into play. the wii just sat there doing nothing. i played that thing and after just a short time i couldn't stand it. so it just sat there until i just traded it in. now the ps3 is the new paperweight. i just have it sitting there. nothing has come out for the console that has kept my interest. i rent before i buy and i've rented a few games. 5 days for the rental and i end up returning them like the day after. to me the latest exclusive ps3 games just suck. the only console that has been used alot is the 360. mainly for games that are multiplatform like COD4 and GH3 and so forth. but i like the look on the 360 then on the ps3. for some reason the ps3 versions seem darker.

The funny thing is too, I wasn't even making fun of the fact that you sent it in, I'm saying the way you worded your sentance implied that you paid someone to fix your 360 that was simply overheated.
Oh, and I realized your talking about the early 360s. I'm just trying to inform you that I have a 360, not a N64.
Also, periods (.) are used to end sentances, not just trail on a random incoherant thought.

If you keep it on a solid surface away from other eletronics and vertical it will last a life time.
why is it recommended to keep it vertical?

why is it recommended to keep it vertical?
Some guy at EB Games told me to keep my PS2 vertical. I forget why but he said dont leave it flat down.

Leaving it laying horizontal gives it a higher chance to scratch the discs. Or so I was told.

I love how PS3 fanboys think the PS3 never breaks or overheats.
"I got a PS3 and it hasn't broken down. This must be true for the other people who bought a PS3."
Idiots.
I'm certain there are failures with the PS3, but probably around the 1% rate normal of electronics. It's definitely nowhere near the epic proportions of 30% failure rate for the 360. And I didn't pull that 30% number out of my ass.

Well this is gay, I have to find my own box to ship it to them in, and they can't pick it up until late January/early February because of the heavy christmas load. I think I'll just buy a PS3 in the mean time, sure the 360 has the games but what's the point if you can't play them?

Wow is that the only thing you can say to discredit my post? Well let me explain for you then since you obviously weren't one of the first to have a 360....
When the 360 first came out and there were heating problems, we didn't have a fucking warranty and get to send it in for free....no we had to pay shipping and some damn fee to get it fixed from Microsoft...not some random person you douche...its part of being an early adapter....but I guess you can talk mean shit while you play your N64......Nice job, retard.
The only retard here is you, my friend. Only a fucking dumbass like yourself buys the first production unit and then pisses and moans about defects THEN (In all your glory) call someone else a retard. You say 'obviously you weren't the first' as if you're somehow the first pioneer to brave arctic winds to acquire a products first debut. Bravo you fucking faggot. You got just what you deserved for being first in line for a spoonful of bugs and manufacturing inefficiencies. But hey, your 'first in line' gamer attitude gives you right of passage into the only social group left in existance that would TOLERATE you.
It's for that EXACT same reason that I'll never buy a first year car model of any car manufacturer because there hasn't been enough time to allow them to work all the kinks out and discover problems that weren't revealed in their testing capabilities.
It probably wasn't smart of you to keep your Xbox on a dusty radiator either or play it for 12 hours straight.
Mop up the cum. I'm done with you.

I heard if you lean the 360 against the wall at a 45% angle it won't scratch discs.

Madman, I'd reconsider if I were you. I used to be a major PC gamer. I more or less live at my girlfriend's apartment and decided to buy an Xbox 360 for there since I'm never home to use my PC. It was a great choice. I think the PS3 could be good as well, but I'd try the 360 first. I doubt you'll have any problem with it, the newer manufactured units work just fine.
You want to keep the Xbox in a location that's not closed up tightly. Just like a computer. You want to keep it in a ventilated area that'll allow the fans to do their task as designed. I would imagine these clowns are putting their xbox on the floor of a dusty room, enclosed in a home entertainment cabinet, or are poorly caring for their xbox/playing 12 hours straight and overheating the bitch.
I've had mine for a month or so and it's been perfectly fine. I play every day when I get home from work for about 3 - 4 hours or so.

The problem with the 360 is that Microsoft designed them with a major flaw.... They have no way to dissipate all that heat. Have you ever felt a 360 after about 15 minutes of use? The thing feels like a freaking oven. If you have one of the newer model 360's, I wouldn't worry about it because supposedly, they have added heat sinks or found some other way to get rid of all that heat so that it doesn't effect the parts inside of the 360. I'd still say that if you have a 360, you still gotta be damn careful with it because there is still that chance of them just taking a dump on you.
My big problem is this: I own a 360, and so far, I have had no problems (although it sounds really loud, and gets REALLY hot). I've had a pretty good experience with gameplay. But I had my PS2 almost since it's launch YEARS ago. I have not had ONE problem with it. It's been on carpet, been played for hours on end, been dusty. But the thing still keeps going. That's the reliability that I look for when I buy a product. This widespread malfunction crap is unacceptable. Also, having to pay for freaking XBOX Live is gay.

Same here. I left my PS2 on for over 14 hours recently and could pick it up and play immediately after. I shouldn't have to worry about caring for a console like some baby. If you have to, that means you have a product that's been shoddily built.
The 360 has a lot of good games and it's cheaper, but the reliability thing would get to me. PS3 has the same games apart from Halo, is a bit more expensive, and it has a typical fail rate. If I get any console from this generation, it'll be the PS3.

I wish I could play the 360 for twelve fucking hours but sadly the thing wouldn't last six without needing to cool down...and I guess some people could mistake the glass table I mentioned earlier for a dusty radiator.......
You Pwnd yourself there. Im pretty sure the more recent xbox's can easily go for 12 hours straight becuase there modified. I have one and it doesnt overheat. Maybe your too fucking stupid to buy an extra fan instead of buying a game?

Tips for getting the most out of your 360:
Place in a very damp or warm place. 85 Degrees Farenheit or above is optimal.
Lean against the wall at a 45 degree angle for maximum gameplay.
Place in a confining home theater stand. Being completely enclosed with no openings is suggested.
Wrap power cord in a blanket. This will keep it insulated from the elements.

Sarcasm...
Also you posted earlier asking why to keep the 360 (or any console) vertically. This is because the heat is able to dissipate better.
I'm not trying to sound like a fanboy here but consoles these days are essentially 'computers' and should be available 24/7. Having to limit your gameplay to 4 hours a day is ridiculous. I could leave my PS3 on 24/7 running @HOME and it wouldn't have a problem.

You are exactly right. We are paying approximately $400 dollars for this piece of equipment, and as consumers, we DESERVE for it to work correctly. That's my problem with my 360. I feel like every time I turn it on, it has the potential to just go to hell. And that's not fair. I should be able to play my 360 for as long as I want to with the confidence that it will be able to operate correctly. That's why I'm seriously thinking about just chucking my 360 and getting a PS3. Alot less hassle and alot more features that appeal to me as a gamer.
I try to limit my game play time to 1 hour sessions. With all of these complaints im sure Microsoft will eventually make one huge update to every system so that overheating and redrings would be a thing of the past. They spend so much on repairs. why not make one big investments and decrease the repair rates/

whats the point of having a console if you only get to play it every other month, cause the turn around time for a broken console is shit?

Maybe the failure rate in Xboxs appears higher because there are more sold than PS3? If there are more Xboxs sold, and more out there than PS3s, then the failure rate is going to appear higher.
Do you know what a 'rate' is? It's a ratio. It doesn't matter how many are out there. For example, if Sony sold a total of 2 PS3's and 1 of them was defective, they would have a failure rate (ratio) of 50% (1/2). Now if Microsoft sells 9 and 6 of them are defective, the failure rate is 66% (6/9).
I dont think M$ knows how much fucking money they might make if they FIX THE FUCKING THING!!! Its been what, 2 years now?? Get ur fucking heads out of ur fucking assholes microsoft!!!!!!!!!!!!
