Plots in Video Games are FUCKING. STUPID.

And by that, I don't mean that plots in video games are bad and I'd like to see them improve. What I mean is that the concept of having a plot in a video game is the dumbest fucking idea ever. I know that I for one always skip the cut scenes if I have the option to.

Classic example: Gears of War. All it was was, according to gamepro.com, "a bunch of hardcore soldiers barking orders at each other, with someone screaming 'they're everywhere!' and stuff blowing up real good." That's the basis of what fucking shooters are, and you can't discount a game for that being all there is to it. Add in a couple cut scenes involving throwaway plot points like a soldiers painful childhood, past love, or just two people yelling at each other, and there you go, geeks everywhere are impressed by its "complex plot." Stop jacking off about video games having plots, nobody gives a shit.

Resistance Fall of Man was a shitty pile of shit compared to Gears of War, but I'm certain that it had a better plot. That doesn't change that it sucked in comparison to Gears of War. That's because in their heartest of hearts, nobody gives three shits about any storyline. You're a dipshit if you don't think gameplay is better than plot. Fuck, I'd even be compelled to say that graphics are better than plot. At least graphics somewhat add to the overall experience. "Having a good plot" on the other hand does absolutely nothing, and the concept of putting one in is douchebageriffic.

Another case in point: Pac Man. Pac Man is an amazing game, and it's also a man's game. Why? Because between each level there wasn't a cut scene with some gay ass crap like "temporarily defeated, blinky and pinky sought to increase their speed to finally capture their dreaded enemy Pac Man. Meanwhile, Pac Man was yourning after his lost lover and feared for the day" ETC ETC ETC. See guys? If people really gave a shit about plots, Pac Man would be a shitty game. It's fucking not. I could give less of a shit about the ghost's motivation to kill pac man, Pac Mans motivation to eat the dots, Pac Mans terrible history and traumatic childhood, or, fuck, their names! IT IS FUCKING FUN.

I'm not a very big fan of action movies. My favorite movie is Pulp Fiction and I suppose you could consider action but that has absoultely nothing to do with terrorists blowing up the world. It has a quite good plot actually.

The types of movies I like are movies that stick with you, and also comedies. Akira Kurosawa's Dreams was an amazing and beautiful work and if you understood it, it would probably inspire you. I definitely reccomend checking it out. And comedies, I should revise that. I like stoner comedies. Cheech and Chong, Big Lebowski, Half Baked, Harold and Kumar, Super Troopers, Grandma's Boy, and this one movie nobody's ever seen called Evil Bong.

It really just comes down to the game. Halo's story is about as typical and redundant as you can get for a Sci-Fi plot. The gameplay is mediocre, but it pulls off that mediocrity well. All the fun is to be had in co-op play. I played through it just to blow more stuff up. I could care less what happened to Master Chief or the flood.

In Chrono Trigger, however, the story is the main part behind the game. It was always the story line that drove me to see the next part. While a few plot devices in that story were once again, typical, they were pulled off extremely well, and the overall plot to it had originality and depth. The battles were simply a way to slow down the pace of the story to me. Luckily, the battle system was interesting and different at the time too.

Yes, for the most part those games have great storylines, some on par to a movie's. The gameplay could be basic but the story keeps moving you forward. Of course shooters have shitty stories that are usually not worth bothering about. Different game genres have different ratios of game to story. It's a matter of preference too.

But the latest Xenosaga is more engaging with the gameplay. FFs usually have good amounts of strategy and gameplay involved.

If there wasn't a plot to video games then some of the greatest games ever made would have been.., well pointless. For example, Mario. If Mario didn't have the goal to save the princess in every game then they wouldn't have a successful game- All he would do eat shrooms and fix toilets. Take your favorite game, Halo 3, and remove the plot. Single player is now pointless (which it pretty much is) but then why pay for an average FPS? If you want a game with no plot I'd suggest WarHawk for PS3. It's online only and all you did is kill people, which, with your attention span, would be good for you.

Don't you ever get the emotions that come along with certain plots? Again, to take it down to your level I'll use Halo 3. Didn't you have a certain rush when in the opening scene the alien (forgot his name) turns out to be on your side now? It's like you've made a friend. Or when the flood start fighting for you because you have the same enemy. Or, at the very end, when Master Chief is in the aircraft, don't you feel any emotions that make the playing experience better?

honestly the plot in call of duty 4 is what kept me glued to my seat for my entire fucking sunday. espeicially (SPOILER) when that damn bomb blows up or when the pres gets shot and it puts u right in the first person view of the events happening. honestly its been awhile since playing a game where i just sat back and thought 'oh shit'.

It really depends on the genre, and how unique and compelling the storyline is. Take Starcraft, for example. The story line for that game is fucking epic, and I'm eagerly waiting to see Raynor and Kerrigan again in SC2. I probably wouldn't have gotten past the first two levels if there wasn't a storyline I could follow.

But for other games, this is definitely not the case. Take the Need For Speed: Carbon, or Acecombat 5. Games like those aren't meant to have a purpose. It's supposed to be "Alright, lets race these guys" and "Eliminate all incoming fighters". Instead, we have to learn about how this douchebag stole your girl and ratted you out to the cops, or how you have some sort of gay relationship with your wingman who was taken hostage so you are left with three other fighter pilots: the loudmouth, the stupidn00b, and the emo chick.:banghead:

meh i think the plot for the god of war series is excellently done and makes u actually want to play the game rather than go 5 minutes into it. Plots are mainly for single player games that have little co-op and or no online play. When you can play online in death matches then of course the plots not going to be excellent. When a games sole purpose is to entertain the single person playing a good plot will keep the player playing and make him want to find out how the main conflicts are resolved
