The person experiencing this is a person from the Penny-Arcade forum community. Now, while I can't guarantee anything as actual fact, the PA community is pretty fantastic.
In other words? I believe him. Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised.
edit: For the lazy
I’ve been given the go-ahead to discuss what has happened concerning my Microsoft issue. It’s a particularly big thing, so you may want to sit down.
I write for a couple of gaming websites at the moment - RealVG, which I helped found in 2006, and GamePartisan, which I’ve been writing for on and off since 2003. My relationship with GP has seen its ups and downs, but right now it’s at a high point and I can only see good things going for that site in the future. So, apparently, do Microsoft.
Yesterday, A Microsoft rep spoke with Jonny DeViney, the Editor in Chief of GamePartisan. While I can’t discuss the ins and outs of what the phone call involved, I can tell you that Microsoft asked DeViney to drop me from the Editorial team - to “remove any potential sources of contention” between the site and Microsoft. I’m not sure what DeViney’s answer was exactly, but the general jist of it from what I’ve heard is that he told them to take their hand and go fuck themselves.
Not content with denying me my request to be able to, y’know, pay for my Xbox Live services, they’ve now taken to flat-out attacking me by trying to lose me a writing job. Well, no. I’m very thankful that DeViney has decided to back me on this one - it would have been so easy for him to shove me out the door, and he would have valid reason to given I haven’t written anything for GP in weeks. I’ll be writing an article about this which will be going up on GP tonight, or tomorrow morning at the latest.
The gloves are off now.

A friend of mine has a PS3 and i played one for the first time yesterday. Some of the games are awesome and the graphics are great, so i'm afraid i must strongly disagree with that statement.

Between the PS3 and the Xbox 360 I'd have to go with the 360.

Yeah this seems fishy. Why would Microsoft do that for a Xboxlive article? I mean look at how many people bitch about Vista, none of them were threatend or atleast reported about it. So why would Microsoft try so hard on Xboxlive? The fact is Microsoft makes enough money to not care about some shitty gaming site.
I don't think this guy realizes that the way consles and hardware is made in UK is different in the US. It's immpossible tp move the account. They probably explained this to him and he refused to listen.

No, he can still access his UK account Via XBox Live. His domain is now set to the USA. They just won't let him pay the USA prices. Turns out that the UK Live prices are higher, and he can't use an American credit card to pay for his account at all. They tell him to buy the UK Live cards, get someone "at home" to pay for it for him, or go back to England.

You know how complicated that would be and how it could be exploited? It's just the rules. He should've called about this before he left if he was this concerned about it. Even then, I don't think Microsoft called the site, it's a really shitty gaming site that I haven't heard of uptill now and I go to alot of gaming sites.

Either way, there is no technical reason they can not switch his account over, if they have no way to switch it, they should delete the old account, and create a new account and match his purchased xbox live marketplace items.
And i for once, actully think this guy should sue microsoft on grounds of racial discrimination, try for a out of court settlement.

I've never had an issue with Nintendo, or heard of anyone with issues with them. Heck, my uncle sent in a Gamecube for repairs, they didn't charge him anything, sent him a brand new GC, along with a controller for "his troubles".

Look it's the way bureaucracy works. The top guys probably never thought of a situation like this. The customer support couldn't do anything because it's the rules. You're talking about contact the UK department of MS then transferering all the data and getting everything right, using alot of resources just to please one guy. There is a soild reason why they can't do it. It's not like there is a one file document that they can transfer or some shit. It's a complicated process that is just to wasteful for the company to do. The people he called couldn't do anything about it. You guys need to think about these situations. I've had to work on my college networks with transfering students accounts to a new network and even then that was complicated, imagine doing that internationally having to abide by all the laws. What he was wanting was something that just couldn't be done.

The quoted section doesn't talk about his original issue, my bad.
He moved to the USA from England, and he's unable to pay for his Live service with his American credit card. When he contacted MS about this, they told him that he'll have to buy UK Live cards, or get someone in the UK to pay for his service with a UK credit card, or just move back to the UK. Since his original account was registered in the UK (the XBox isn't the problem, his actual account is), he can't switch it to the USA.
He wrote an article about his problem, and supposedly someone from Microsoft called his boss and requested that he be relieved from his job. That part sounds a bit far fetched to me.

well, I think he should be 'allowed' to speak his mind about the issue and crityicise it, as long as it's not a rant. if it was a rant and just 'fuck of microsoft' or whatever, then fair enough
either way, I'm firmly in the PS3 camp
