So im sure you've heard it by now, but most xbox 360's Fail. Ive had mine for about 6 months and it crapped out on me Saturday. I called Microsoft and they are doing the whole deal that they usually do for free, upgrading the power core chip to a .65 nm falcon model and installing a heatsink. the reason my 360 died im pretty sure is because its in a somewhat confined area. its horizontal on wood. in a 3x2x3 cabinet with my T.V. on top, but this is all besides the point.

I have seen countless videos and comments about how if you take your 360, wrap it in about 3 or 4 towels and turn it on with nothing plugged in besides the power chord, then leave it on with the RROD going for about 20-30 mins. then turn it off unwrap it and then let it cool for another 20-30 mins near a fan that it will work fine for about a week or 2 ive only got a couple more days untill my coffin gets here and i wanna get some last minute things done/tell friends and what not.

The thing is this sounds like serious shenanigans and im seriously hesitant. Has anybody else tried this trick and been successful, or failed miserably?

I put a poll just to basically sum this up.

But i would like some discussions.

I heard about a kid who wanted to cool his 360 and came up with a brilliant idea. He wrapped it up in a towel to prevent it from getting wet and he put it into a bowl of water.

No, I am not kidding. Try it.

I don't see how that could help the system. All you're doing is making it overheat, and damaging it even more. I heard the solder points on the system board are not very good to begin with, so when the 360 overheats it cracks the solder points. I may be wrong but that's what i've heard from several people.

Either way, I say don't be stupid and wrap it in towels and ruin it even more. Or go ahead, what do I care. :p

Yeah i tried it at my friends house one time.
Same instructions and everything.
But like barely into the game before you can enjoy it, it freezes.
So I guess you can try it to see the yellow rings light up one more time but thats about it.

if you were really good, you could try modifying the heatsinks to accept watercooling

Try putting over a fire, I think that would work just as well.

I wonder if you could make ball lightning by microwaving a 360...

In theory it COULD work...

The main cause of the 3 red lights is solder failure, it gets to hot and loses the conection.

When you heat the solder back up there is a slim chance that it will reconnect itself thus fixing the problem.

It does not void your warranty so it is worth a shot IMO

So a 360 will get past 300F when wrapped in towels? That is about the minimum to be able to reflow solder. I would think that would melt the plastic case and damage other sensitive components.

Warming does help cracked solder joints temporarily, but as soon as it cools it will go back to the way it was.

I never said that, but it wouldn't surprise me if it did.
