Believe it or not..

WoW & FFXI

I know the majority of players from both "sides" generally tend to hate and ridicule the other, but I think they are both great games in themselves.

WoW
************************************************** ********
I. WoW is great because you can play it for 15min. or 15 hours and get something done.

II. Although grinding does get a bit old, there are still raids, and the ability to go solo and actually level, wonderful for those 'anti-social' days.

III. You can customize your job by choosing what to level up in (in a sense).

IV. You can make numerous characters.

although WoW does lack one key ingredient in the recipe to make a wonderful mmo, a solid storyline.
************************************************** ********
FFXI
************************************************** ********
I. Storyline, enough said

II. You can level more than just one "profession" without having to create a new character.

II. Graphics are beautiful, I almost cried when I first started adventuring.

IV. Leveling is more difficult, but more group oriented, which can make the game even more fun!

FFXI does get a bit dull, ex. when you have to walk between areas prior to attaining chocobo license, but with a solid storyline, and plenty of gorgeous scenery to observe, this is an amazing game as well.
************************************************** ********

point of this post, stop fighting over which mmo is better, and grow up to realize that both mmo's have their ups and downs. They are both great games, am I right?

Mm, I disagree. Warcraft 1-3 progressed the game, WoW doesn't have a story line in the sense that everything you're doing is for a reason, a cause.

WoW has many quests which tell quite a bit of back story, but as far as progressing the story there is none. Unless you consider new instances with bosses that shouldn't be killed in a MMO setting as progression.

I feel Blizzard butchered Warcraft, those of us who are diehard fans who hoped to see a linear thrilling RTS leading up to the death of these bosses who are now being killed in WoW are quite upset over the matter. Because we looked forward to this epic battle, now all we have is 12-16 year olds who care little about the the legend which is Warcraft screaming over voice chat "EEEEEE KILL BOSSS PURPLZ!", it's not very fulfilling.

Have you seen the cutscenes from Warcraft III? They're incredible. Blizzard definitely does a better job than just about everybody else when it comes to CG cutscenes.

Tabula Rasa at the moment. I was really, really into Hellgate: London but yeah, no. It was no where near large enough to keep me coming back for more. Being able to play and beat the game in a matter of a day or so and then just farming for epics that had sometimes dropped without...uh..stats...was no fun.

I played FFXI for 4 years. WHM 75, BLM 40, BRD 38, Hume, Rank 8, Cerberus. I had my clothcraft to 91+2 with all other subs to 60. I crafted all my own armor including Noble's & Vermillion's.

Sadly it's suffering a slow death (you can thank WoW for that). I knew the game was dying when I was 38 BRD and looking for pt for 3 hours. I cancelled my account not too long ago. It was fun but time to move on. Right now I play Eve.

Yes, but those games evolve. They become different, new games in a world that stays there forever. That is why you pay monthly for them, constant developments.

Sadly, people can't properly understand that.

It's socially unacceptable to spend a measly $15.00 for a subscription to a game, but it's social acceptable to spend $300.00 a month on booze and people will do it. I know a guy that would buy $100.00 worth of cocaine every weekend but called me a pathetic nerd for paying $15.00 a month for a game.

And as odd as it sounds, subscription is what wards people away, people would rather pay $150.00 for 3 games a month to keep to them entertained rather then pay a "subscription" of $15.00 a month.

FFXI and Guild Wars.

I still play ffxi, best mmo to date imo. I hated WoW it was just too easy and a grind. Animals/monsters would stop chasing you after 40 feet. I wanted consequences when I took on something too strong or slipped up and was seen by something big. FFXI just had the right difficulty; a bit of a learning curve but it's fun.

P.S. Leviathan owns you. Skeet skeet.

I refuse to pay 15.00$ a month to keep playing is because I'm not working, living on my own, or have the money to do that each month. I'm lucky to HAVE 15.00$ a month. Not to mention, I'm not going to spend 50$ for the game, 15$ a month to play it, and than another 30$ for the new expansion as well as 15$ each month. It's ridicolous. If you make such a great game and are proud of it, you should make enough profit from selling it at a good price, not be a greedy bitch and ask for money every month.

Rock on, I just canceled my WoW account and restarted Eve. So far, a lot of entertainment to be had.

Eve is the most open-ended MMO to date. You can smuggle, steal, scam, decieve, you name it.

What turned me off about WoW's PvP was it wasn't that open-ended. Sure you get to kill the guy, but what about looting his dead body? When I killed a guy I wanted to take his best armor that he worked so hard to get, but that was not achievable in WoW.

EvE is a whole different game. You can pop a guy who spent millions if not billions of ISK (Eve's version of gil) on his ship and he can lose it all in an instant. That's what makes this game so great. It's the only game/mmo I've ever played that makes my heart pound because of the risk of losing it all.

They have a team always developing on it. And last I checked developing for a game costs money. Your average fps or shooter doesn't have a team of dedicated developers always working on it around the clock. And who said you have to buy the expansion packs?

Heh..

*cough* MGS2 *cough*

In all seriousness though:

I've posted it here before, and a few people tried it and seemed to hate it, but I'll be more than happy to mention it again.

Shadowbane (http://chronicle.ubi.com/newspost.php?id=15088)

Shadowbane is a free MMORPG designed by the guys over at Ubisoft. It used to be subscription based, but now they let people play for free and use ads for revenue instead. The graphics are definitely dated, the game can be glitchy at times, and the interface is quite a bit cumbersome at first, but it's playable for free now.

If you like grinding for hours on end to see a single level, you're going to hate Shadowbane. You can easily max your character's level (70 is max) within a week if you have the help of some other players. And it appears that all of the best gear in the game is made by other players, instead of looted off mobs. There are, however, some rare runes that give your character extra abilities. Plus, you can't beat the price, it's free now.

So, where's the content? Shadowbane is extremely PVP oriented. For those of you that like having a cost to death, this is your game. When you die, everything that you're carrying that isn't equipped is left at your corpse. That means, if another player kills you, you're corpse is going to be empty when you get back. Yes, gankage galore! Also, there are player/guild owned towns that can be sieged. Not bad for a free game.

The control system and GUI of Shadowbane are terrible. There's also so shortcut key that stops the flying character from flying, I kept constantly running out of stamina and floating through the air at 1mph for about 30 minutes before I figured out why.

The GUI can be customized to any way you want. Any key can be used as a shortcut. You just can't use keys to move your character. I wouldn't blame the GUI for you not noticing your stamina bar draining.

The control system requires that you click to move, and the transparent objects between your character and the camera will recieve the click instead of the ground you're aiming at. That's the single biggest problem with the control system. So if a tree is in front of the camera, your character will move towards it (north) even though you clicked in the other direction (south). It's an annoyance, and one that you'll never completely avoid.

Outside of that, everything else involves a bit of getting used to, and customization.

Haha, I lol'd at how much of an ignorant piece of shit you are. FFXI has a great amount of quests, the main has about 30-50 if you do them all. Then you have CoP, WoTG, and ToAU. Sure there's grind, but name a fun and successful mmo that doesn't have any grind. And this game's grind is fun. Yes, I enjoy partying on this game.

WC 1, 2, and 3 aren't MMOs and their stories are set in WoW's past. While WoW is a decent game, it's too childish (on the alliance side and forum community).

I'd say EverQuest is the best MMO of all time, because it was a standard setter. It reigned supreme for nearly 7 years and WoW's mechanics are just EQs renamed and freshened up. There isn't anything in WoW that EQ didn't have already. To be honest, EQ was far more balanced all around than WoW will ever be.

If you want a real MMO, with a more in depth story, then I'd encourage you to ditch WoW and pick up EQ2 (w/expansions) if you have not. You probably won't look back.

Woah there, buddy. I thought you were talking about EQ1 up until this point. EQ2 has many, many flaws, and the problem with it is that there is even LESS solo content than there was in EQ1. Sure, I love partying as well, but there comes a time when I'd like to do things alone. And unless you are a Shadowknight or Swashbuckler, you have a terrible time around levels 5-10 just LEAVING Qeynos/Freeport and NOT dying.

EQ1 was a masterpiece. EQ2 is very mediocre.

Everyone forgets there's even a storyline because they're too focused on the race to 75 and forget all about it. After Rank 5, they don't bother anymore because they get the airship pass.

That's not true, myself and quite a few others I spend time with online have done all of the rank missions, all of the expansion missions, and several quests.

I got into it initially for the story, because Final Fantasy games all have great stories, but I stay for the people and the fun I have interacting with them.

True, but that only works with a good LS devoted to the storyline.

The LS I was in wasn't all that great so I dropped out and was solo for years. I got rank 5 with the help of a jpn player who had almost every job to 75 with rank 10. He alone helped me get my rank and AF.

It wasn't too long ago I found a decent LS that revolved around quests, NM's & storyline. They helped me get rank 8 and Sky.

So again, it all depends on a good LS. Some LS's stick to missions and quests, while others focus on NM's, BCNM's, etc..

How many times have you stood around shouting for help and waited for hours with no response? It's hard enough to get a party yet alone to get help with a quest/mission. Years ago you wouldn't have that problem.

Unless SE comes up with a new FF MMO, it'll continue dying a slow death. 4 years ago I remember doing a /sea all and over 4,000 players would be on. Now you're lucky if you get at least 3,000. Normal population averages between 1,200 - 1,500. But don't forget, half of those stats are mules and bot fishers.

Every now and then I'll kill some time by playing Trickster Online. The quests are really rewarding so it's always fun to do those, especially the party quests where you have to complete certain tasks with the help of your party members. I'm not sure what the max. level is in that game. I've seen lvl 300 people, it's rediculous. Leveling is kinda quick if you know what you're doing so that's always a plus. I try not to get too involved in MMORPG's anymore because they suck up too much time. It's a cutesy 2-D game, which is good because I can just see myself getting too immersed in a 3-D rpg.

There's also a pretty cool event going on right now where people on all three servers have to excavate these gift box things. If we reach 3.5m boxes dug up, the GMs stock each of our accounts with some awesome crap and 25,000 Myshop Points (which normally costs 25 dollars to obtain). I guess they have events pretty often for different seasons, holidays, and whatnot. There's always something new being added or updated it seems.

Sadly, WoW is just so much of a grind now that if I had to make a choice, I'd play Runescape instead of it.

That's music to my ears.

I used to troll the hell out of Battle.net WoW forums, saying WoW is simply a grind, I could get 15+ pages in 2 hours with people trying to prove me wrong.

Now, WoW has been out for awhile, the game hasn't changed too much and all I read about the game includes something about the grind.

WoW is no grind compared to EVE or FFXI.
