I love Dream Theater and Symphony X, but am branching out. So I need opinions on these bands:
The Mars Volta
Circus Maximus
Queensryche
Porcupine Tree
Riverside
Coheed and Cambria
I've heard people talk about them but never really checked them out.

The Mars Volta is pretty good from what I've heard (have to go check out the new album as well), but some of their songs are too long for their own good.

My favorite Mars album was Deloused in the Comatorium. Queensryche and Porcupine Tree are absolutely stellar. I recommend Operation Mindcrime, specifically the song Suite Sister Mary to listen to from 'Ryche and all of Deadwing from Porcupine Tree. I'm not really into Coheed, they're good, but not my cup of tea. Never really listened to the others.
EDIT - If you haven't already, check out Between the Buried and Me's new album Colors. Should be right up your alley.

Yeah I'll agree with these guys that you should check out The Mars Volta I've got Frances the Mute and I really love their stuff. Now Coheed on the other hand is my favorite band and I really love everything they do. I think they have a really different sound then usual and you should check them out.

I just got Frances the Mute. Pretty good. Cygnus...Vismund Cygnus and L'via L'viasquez are awesome.
I'm listening to Operation Mindcrime right now...

Ok, here are my opinions on those bands.
The Mars Volta - Pretty cool and crazy band with a fairly unique sound. Get De-Loused.
Porcupine Tree - Brilliant prog rock which touches on a fair few styles. Start with In Absentia.
Riverside - Prog metal which doesn't forget its roots. Some nice guitarwork. Get Second Life Syndrome
Queensryche - Just listen to Operation Mindcrime and go from there. Pretty good prog metal band.

If you're interested in going heavier, check out Meshuggah.

Definately check out porcupine tree. Start out with In Absentia and Deadwing. If you like those albums, you will definately need to branch out and check out their older stuff. If you want to go on a song basis, check out Trains, Shallow, Arriving Somewhere But not Here, and .3.
Riverside is also an awesome band. Check out the album Out of Myself .. The songs The curtain falls and The Same River especially.
I don't really care for the other bands you listed, but I have never really heard much about circa maximus so I might have to check them out.
Also another band you might be interested, It's more of a post-rock band with a lot of progressive tendencies is "Gazpacho". Click here (http://www.last.fm/music/Gazpacho) to listen to the full album "night" on the music player, see what you think. Not quite as heavy or hard-hitting as something like Dream Theater or Symphony X.

I agree on Between the Buried and Me....not entirely prog metal since they use death vocals but they're amazing and lead guitar in their songs is very proggy...Probably my favorite band...
And if you like them check out Opeth
