I know many of you will say "waste of money" or some bullshit. Well fact is I worked my ass off and saved money to do this. I can't wait to get it and play Crysis and Call of Duty 4 at thier full potential. I'll also be overclocking it. Once I build it I'll take pictures and post benchmarks and such. waste of money. in 6 months it'll be half the price. and that case? ugghh looks like a goofy black jet engine. OMG and look at the cas latency of that ram. YUCK. you wont get much of an overclock out of THAT. and only a complete idiot would buy a brand new graphics card, one that's 10x the price and 2% of the power increase and will use the same amount of power as the country of kenya.

You obviously have no idea what you're saying.
1. I don't care if the computer will be half the price. It happens with anything computers and it's a fact of life I'm going to live with.
2. I like the case and it does exactly what I want. Cool the hardware. This case is one of the most effective cooling cases out there.
3. CAS latency of ram will go up as ram get's faster. Since the ram is so fast the latency times don't mean as much. This ram is also very effective at overclocking.
4. The graphics card is coming out at 450-500 bucks. Cheap for high end card and one card is 30% faster than a 8800 Ultra. Not to mention I'll be overclocking.
5. Power is no issue for me.
I just think you're jealous.

Fuck, why not go solid state HD? You can get 60GB for like $900.00.
It looks like a great computer and it obviously just something you want to do, I've wanted to do the same but every time I get to the moment where I'm going to blow a shit ton of money I realize that I can run anything I wish with half the money.
Like others have said, Crysis and COD4 WILL play creamy smooth on very high settings with less then a $2,000 machine. Just keep that in mind.

I've actually seen motherboards that can have 64GB of RAM. Of course, it was a small server board with 4 processor slots on it, and it was a few years ago. But all new motherboards support 8GB or 16GB of RAM.
I think I read somewhere about Vista only detecting up to like 3 GB.
It's 4GB and it's only for 32bit systems. In binary math, 2^32= around 4 billion. For 64bit computers, 2^64= about 18446744073 billion. It's safe to say with a 64bit system, you won't be limited on RAM for a good couple years.
But like others have said, I wouldn't go with the dual 9800GX2s. If you don't all ready know, the card is actually a combination of 2 cards in SLI all ready. The 2 chips it's using are either underclocked versions of the G92(8800gt) or modified or mobile versions of the G92. Sure, you might have 4(or 6 if you get a Tri SLI motherboard), but if you play any game that doesn't have support for SLI or don't have any benefit from it(and there are a lot), then your $4000 system will end up being slower than a system with a $250 8800gt. The kind of video card that you get should depend on your monitor anyway. 4 G92s are good for 2560x1600 or better, but unless you spent $3000 on a computer monitor, I don't think you'll need anymore than a single 8800gt. If it were me, I'd buy a single gpu that was cheap but had more than enough performance, and then just upgrade in a year with the money you saved by not buying 4 gpus.
You can also save some money on the RAM, too. Intel systems show no advantage using faster RAM, you won't even notice the difference between PC2 3200 and PC2 9600. You also won't see any difference in overclocking a quad core CPU, the fact that it has 4 cores is more important than the fact that it's 3ghz. And with overclocking your GPU, come on. You're using 4 GPUs in a single system. How far do you think you're going to clock it?
JesusTheJedi
01-20-2008, 03:15 PM
32bit versions of Vista will only recognize about 3.3 gigs of RAM, 64bit can recognize 8gigs, though potentially 8gigs can be slower than 4 (unless your RAM has very high clocks speeds, the more memory you have, the more space your computer has to reach through to find what it needs).
And Silver, if you know what you're doing, you can build a $2k computer to play Crysis on all high.

32bit XP and Vista both recognize 4GB; 64bit Ultimate, Enterprise, and Business all support 128GB of RAM or more. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/editions/64bit.mspx
But you're right. The more memory you have, the slower it will go. The difference isn't really noticeable, but it's still a waste to spend all that money on memory that won't be used and will just slow your games down.

8GB is completely unnecessary imo. 4GB will suffice but make sure you pick up Vista x64.
Monitor is a little bit unnecessary imo, but that's a good price for that size + HDMI input. I'd go for a 24" personally.
CPU will drop probably $200 by the time you buy it, but don't get your hopes up on that card coming in Feb. Who knows really, don't be sad if it's not there when you want it. Go with EVGA if at al possible.
The 10k drive is really unnecessary unless you want to have that 10k drive host your OS and then a 500GB drive (or something) host your applications. That's the best way to go for performance + reliablity.
For a case, I'd go with the Antec 900, but that's just me. That 350mm fan on the side won't allow you to take the side panel off for whatever reason (depending on how it's wired), but it sure as hell will keep the mobo cool.

Yeah that was the plan. The ram is cheap and it was just another $150~ to get another 4gigs. My friend has the same ram and he has a easy time OCing it.

The monitor is just what I need and because it's 4inchs larger than normal 1980 X 1200 monitors players heads and the terrain looks larger. Many people have said they can see the enemy coming alot easier.

The rumour mill, which alot of sites are saying, is Feburary 19th. Ethier way I'm going to wait tell the card comes out.

I'm going to have the drive dedicated to just OS and Apps. I have a seperate 500gb External HD I use for my music/pictures/videos. I'm planning on buying a SSD drive also.

The case is function more than fashion. I also like the looks of the case and I have seen one in person and it runs VERY cold. The side panel isn't too hard getting off and both fans can be controlled which is also a plus for me.

Have you ever overclocked the Q6600? Mine would run nicely at 2.4 standard. Wack that up to 2.88, Vista boots faster, programs are much more responsive, everything runs smoother and most importantly Crysis runs much better.
OCing a Quad does make a difference, the fact mine still idles below 40 and on full par never goes above 45 also makes overclocking even more inviting since its putting jackshit strain on the chip.
Edit:
Oh and Fungus Amungus I have the 10k 150gig drive running my apps and vista, don't know if it makes much difference but it feels nice to know its technically faster than normal. For all i know it could help game loads, however they arlready load fucking fast for me anyway.

Thanks Random. I've been interested in having a SSD drive dedicated for VIsta and Crysis. Vista boots up in 10 seconds and Crysis gets a huge boost, like 20+ frames.
PsiRedEye22
01-20-2008, 06:55 PM
At your specs, it's unnecessary. You may have the money, but you lack research. 8 gigs of RAM is completely useless for anything now or coming out in the next 5 years.
Also, you will easily get 60 frames in Crysis without overclocking any of that. You seem to want a powerhouse, but there is indeed such a thing as too much power.

Well, you almost can't count AA because the engine really isn't built for it... Only a computer like the one he plans on building could do AA on Crysis, and it won't look much different.
Also, as far as I know, having a 10k HDD will not really improve performance. Games will load faster, and some Apps will start a little faster, because it only increases the speed in which your computer is able to load up info from the HDD, which it usually only does at first (like when you're loading a map)

Go look it up, unless you do some weird major tweaking the 4 Gigs you put in only shows up as 3.3 something.
All 32 bit systems will recognize 4GB. When you start up a system, there are files that are being used in the memory that don't show up because they're really important to the systems themselves. Those files usually stay on the HDD in the Virtual Memory. All the memory in the system from RAM and Virtual Memory and even video card memory can't go over 4096MB in any 32bit system. Those important Windows files might even see a boost if they're loaded onto RAM instead of Virtual Memory.
It might show up as 3.3GB or somewhere around there, but it doesn't change the fact that it's still 4GB of memory there.
Who said I was going to use all 8 gigs as Ram? I could install a program on the extra 4 gigs and have it come up fast. I know it doesn't improve and that it's "useless". I've done the research, but it's a extra 4 gigs for 120 bucks. So why not?
So, how do you plan on installing something onto this 4GB of extra RAM you have? There is only one way I can think of to use RAM as disk space, but it requires a PCI card, and it's really impractical, and you'll have to keep power to your computer 24/7. It's a lot better to just get 4GB and a 4GB SSD.

So, how do you plan on installing something onto this 4GB of extra RAM you have?I think he was talking about preloading applications into the RAM, so they are ready when he needs them. If you got the RAM to waste, I guess there are stupider ways to waste it.
It all seems pretty stupid to me....but oh well...its his money.
Fungus Amungus

Ireally don't see the "waste". This 4gb kit is $120, $250~ for 8gb. I like knowing I can run Fraps while playing Crysis or the fact I can leave some of the background programs going. I'm also using Photoshop, 3d Max, and music processing programs, which require a lot of RAM. My belief is you can never have too much RAM.
Awesome specs man. That is going to be one crazy machine. Here's some suggestions from me:
1. I have a Q6600, 8800 gts 640, and 2 gig ram and I can run Crysis on high pretty well (at 1280x1024 or whatever). Once AA comes on, it starts stuttering, and my specs are pretty solid. Your machine will obviously do ALOT better, but I'm not sure you could run Crysis on very high with high AA at 60 fps (especially at 1920x1200). I could be wrong here, but I think you are going to have some stutters at intense moments, so just be prepared. Here's a good link:
http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,2222415,00.asp
As you can see, they got 6 fps on 1920x1200 with 4AA (lol) with a very good setup. I can't say how good you graphics card will be, but don't get your hopes up too high lol.
2. As others have said, I'm not sure how useful 8 gigs ram is. And I also got G.skill ram (1x1 for 2 gigs), but mine was faulty the day I got it. I ran a burn in test and the memory had errors, and anything memory intensive gave me blue screens. I couldn't RMA because I had to have a computer for school but now that I got a laptop I'm finally going to do it. So I would run tests on all the parts that you order right when you get them so you can RMA them without getting dependent/lazy.
3. You could look into a 15k RPM drive, but I don't know how good/dependable those are.
But anyways, you're gonna have alotta fun with a machine like that lol.

Apparently the only way to contact them is through their support ticket email scheme. You will get an acknowledgement and never ever hear from them again regarding your question or issue.
Cons: Every 24 hours or so the optical signal from the card just disappears. Its easily fixed by switching modes back and forth in the audio console, but I'm looking forward to a driver update or fix.

Waste of money or some bullshit....
It's your money but since you made a thread I'm compelled to give my input. Your games are gonna look top notch but there's a relative limit to the visual quality any partiular game and GPU(s) can produce. As an example, if I play Morrowind on a good PC today, it doesn't look any better than it did running on a top-of-the-line PC when it was released, your GPUs are gonna be snoozing even with those games on maximum quality.
You seem to know a thing or two about PCs so you know that your "amazing hardware" is going to be "good hardware" probably by this time next year. So you can spend $2,000 on a gaming rig more than capable of what you want to do now, and an equivalent amount in a couple years. Or, you can go balls to the wall now and still have to get a new rig a couple years. Which ever you choose, good luck. :)

I don't like going to Pre-built computers. I don't doubt their computers rock, but it's cheaper and I feel better playing a computer I made and put together. I've put togather doezens of computers so I'm not worried of malfunction on my part.

Pfft, I custom built a single-core P4 with a gig and a half of RAM and an 80 gig hard drive. It lasted me many, many years up until this christmas.
I had a similar set-up, but what I was trying to emphasize was that there isn't any point in overkill because of the volatility of the PC hardware market.

Like I said, I don't give a shit about how obsolete it will become in the next couple of months. I can't control the hardware market, so why fret about it?

No need to fret at all, it's something we as PC gamers are all subject to.
I don't know what else you are going to do on that PC other than game because I haven't read this entire thread, but spending good coin on hardware that is going to remain dormant so-to-speak, simply doesn't make sense. Quad core processor? sweet, but unless you are a heavy multitasker or run multithreaded apps that are built to utilize those cores -which games do not, not past two anyway - you will see virtually no benefit over a dual core. Likewise with GPU etc. I guess the principal can be compared to buying a server to run Microsoft Word.

Say two people had $4000 and one of them spent all of it at once on a PC that played games at full resolution with maxed out settings at 100fps. The other person spent $1500 on a PC with good hardware that played those same games with the same settings, but at a few less fps. One year later, both computers are considered high-midrange with decent processors, but outdated GPUs. The second person has $2500 left from the year before to spend on upgrading the GPU and the memory if it's necessary, and be on the same level as the first person. Another year later, both PCs are considered low-midrange with outdated everything. It's the year when 100 core processors and fusion processors are king, and quad core processors(even at 4ghz) are practically 16bit. The first person is still using the same $4000 computer he had for the last two years, while the second person has $2000 or so left over.
Also, I don't see why you can't just spend $2000 on an ultra high end pc with $2000 in software for it.

Yeah usefulidiot316 is quite right.
Unless you can literally burn money, going for the complete top spec is a waste of money.
With my PC i got the best equipment but not the ultra best since the difference was negletable, but the money saved was. Now my 8800gtx is running everything for me fine, and the rest of my PC is ready for Nvidias new chipset cards, if my 8800 is struggling by then, which thanks to the console market probably won't happen.
