I wil make this quick cuz i gotta eat my ramen.
This is my take on the two modes of gameplay. I think when making a new game They should only focus on one aspect and thats if they should either incoorperate single player in game only and focus more on it, or make it an online game entirely.
Face it, why do you think most games are shitty, because they bundle both modes altogeather in a disc and focus less one one aspect.
They don't have any room to balance both modes out.
Now for example im a single player guy, Im not attracted to multiplayer at all, ive tried it, but it quickly got boring for me no matter how many headshots or high score i got.
I love single player because thats the main enchillada (sp) of the game, the one where the plot, gameplay, graphics, musical score really takes center stage.
IMHO multiplayer is just gets repetitive quick, single player can too get repetitive (assassins creed) but some games have replay value to them, and even though it doesn't the experience still was good.
So whats your take?

I think a good singleplayer should be the primary focus, and I think sandbox style singleplayer should me mandatory for games these days, for re playability

A good sp game with ability for cooperative play Multi-player, and a good sandbox mode has me squirting in my pants.

Depends on the game you want to make ...

im mostly a MP kinda guy. i rarely play SP in the games these days.
i just prefer playing real people instead of AI. i find re-playability in competing against real people, 2 games will never be the same.
i think games like Bioshock and GTA should remain SP because that's what they do best. although GTA MP should come out as a completely separate game.

Halo 2 balanced them pretty well imo.
They should focus on both, if anything to have less, multiplayer.

I love multiplayer. I also like singleplayer. If the game does well on one of the two I'll play the better half. I still remember logging into my first battlefield 1942 game and also playing Everquest for the first time. Good times good times.

That's what COD4 is for.
Amazing SP and MP.

stole the words out of my mouth, that game has great SP and MP. i do think that CSS has more MP replayability though, due to surf maps gungame tons of custom maps, i rock at it while im just above average at COD, and custom skins, also easier for me to hack when im in the mood =]

How come some people act like there could only be one or another? This is like the graphics + gameplay argument. Just because something has good graphics doesn't mean it could never have fun gameplay.
Same with this, brilliant single play games can have an addicting and enjoyable multiplayer.

hehe, thats the spirit!
Now, would the whole moddable aspect of HL2 and the Source engine be counted upon the Multi player part of the game?
Or just a Single Player Feature turned MP?

It really depends on the game.
The Baldur's Gate games are my favourite games ever, but I don't think they suit multiplayer too well (and I have tried) - it's annoying when people have different paces of gameplay and aren't considerate of it etc. You'll have one player who pauses a lot and another who never does. The mood feels rushed which isn't right for BG.
I'm not a huge fan of hack 'n' slash RPGs, but it's fun multiplaying them at LANs every now and again. At my last LAN, 4 of us started a game of Diablo and I ended up finishing it with one mate because the other two had dropped off.
And I LOVE multiplayer Desert Combat.

after playing mass effect i think every single player game that even remotely incorporates some sort of levelling up/rpg elements should do as mass effect does; i.e. once completed the game, when you replay it you start with everything you finished with, and continue to improve from there.
obviously may need exceptions for story critical abilities

I'm more of a multiplayer person. Always have been. Whether it be 007, Smash Bros, or COD I always like multiplayer more than single player. I've never even beat a COD game single player because all I really enjoy is multiplayer online (obviously not with 007 or Smash bros on 64 though). I guess its just knowing that I'm going against real people and not a computer that makes it more fun for me. Thats just my opinion.

Until AI gets better, I won't be playing a lot of fps single player. The enemies don't evade much and have unrealistic aim to make up for it or just have large numbers... or all of the above.
Multiplayer is fun, but single player can be fighting (even if it's only against AI) and so much more.
Time/money is what keeps game makers from making a game with both great single and multi player, it's not like they have to mentally gear themselves for one or the other.
It's still hard to understand why they fail so hard. Halo 3 was being developed even before the 360 came out yet it looks like they waited until the last minute to rehash Halo 2. If Bungie took 3 years to squeeze out that relative turd, imagine what companies go through to make a new game. Take the time, I'll spend the money.

You really can't take gaming as a whole and then pit Singleplayer against Multiplayer. Games are too diverse, they're all built for different ways of playing.

fuck single player/campaign shit. i used to play that bullshit a lot before and now just think its total shit. the only way i will ever play a single player is if i can unlock stuff for online play. and usually i beat it fast to get the game play over with.
