What are your favorite extreme bands (grind/death/black/etc)?
Behemoth
Between The Buried & Me (i guess they're extreme)
Cannibal Corpse
Cryptopsy - my favorite death metal band
Death (pretty much responsible for the death metal genre)
Deicide
The Dillinger Escape Plan (turned me onto grind)
Genghis Tron (these guys are great, they're like electronic/technoish/grind)
Job For a Cowboy
Meshuggah (they're really not death or grind but I'd call them somewhat extreme)
Morbid Angel
Napalm Death
Nile (egyption themed death metal, who woulda thought?)
The Number 12 Looks Like You
Obituary
Opeth (I use to be a huge fanboy obsess over these guys, great band though)
Pig Destroyer
The Red Chord (my username's a song of theirs)
Sepultura (they're old stuffs real thrashy like Slayer)
Slayer (its said that Reign in Blood is responsible for sparking alot of death metal bands even though Slayer isn't considered death metal, weird)
Suffocation

Deathspell Omega's newest is pretty X-treme. They're like the Rachmaninoff of black metal.

I've never really heard any black metal actually. I've read that they have horrible production for some reason, I guess to get a certain vibe or something. And the makeup and costumes turn me off too. Atleast the stuff like the avatar above this post. (no disrespect to the genre, i just don't get it yet.)

Yes it has bad production. The worse the better IMO. Black Metal with good production just doesn't feel right to me.

Whats a good black metal band? I wanna see if I can get into any. I bought Cradle of Filth a while back but then I read that they're like fake black metal or some shit idk. The instruments were good, I just can't stand their vocalist.

They started off with terrible production yeah. The newer stuff isn't too bad though. It's also better IMO.
they're a great band but I wouldn't expect to fall in love with them instantly.. especially if you don't listen to black metal.

Start with Immortal's most recent three albums and then go backwards through their discography to get a good feel of what you like in black metal. I think the most "pure" black metal band is probably early Mayhem.

I just listened to some of those bands. I dig the music, I just have to get used to the vocals. I was the same way when I started listening to death metal. So is the main difference between death and black the bad production/raspier vocals/more darker(evilish) sound?

I only have Strapping Young Lad - Alien, but I've read that City was their best release by far.
I can't really pick a favorite album by Meshuggah but New Mellennium Cyanide Christ was my favorite song for a while when I first got Chaosphere. That song jams so hard.
As for Behemoth I only have Demigod, I've been meaning to get more of their stuff but never get around to it. I love how people say the vocals on Demigod are audible, thats such bullshit. Sounds like they're layered 10 times over. Slaves Shall Serve melts my brain, in a good way.

Agreed. Immortal is a great place to start. At the Heart of Winter was one of my first BM albums.
I could post a huge list of my fav black/death metal bands, but I'll just list some of my favourites.
Windir - greatest black metal band IMO.
Arcturus/Ulver - not entirely BM :D
Summoning
Bathory
Melechesh
Necromantia

It was my very first black metal album. Now, a lot of my favorite bands are BM.

You're on at 10 now? I used to listen to it in the summer, but then it changed to Thursday at midnight... which is too late for me on a schoolnight.
I'll tune in if I remember.

Anyone heard of The Locust? They're like experimental grind. Interesting to say the least. I'm gonna pick up one of their records soon. And I recently discovered Agoraphobic Nosebleed. Been really interested in Grind lately.

I only really like Opeth and Amon Amarth, although I see Bathory mentioned in a couple of posts, and I like them too, but I wouldn't really call them extreme.
Some of the other bands I can take in very small doses, but I wouldn't say I was a fan.

Anything by SYL is fucking amazing. City is a great album.
I really enjoyed Behemoth's newest "The Apostasy" moreso
than "Demigod." I would so far as to call it one of the best,
if not the best, death metal album I've ever heard.

Where would people classify Dimmu Borgir? I know they're a bit cheesy but I like em.

Behemoth's Sventevith (Storming Near the Baltic) crushes anything else the band's put out, IMO. Of course, it's a different genre entirely from ZKC/Demigod/Apostasy.
Some of my favorite extreme albums of the past year or so:
Absurd - Facta Loquuntur
Bone Awl - Not For Our Feet
Carnivore - Carnivore
GISM - Detestation
Sextrash - Sexual Carnage
Siege - Drop Dead
Slaughter (CAN) - Strappado

Between The Buried and Me (Tommy's growled vocals would obviousy put them in the extreme music genre I guess but they're so much more than that)
The Dillinger Escape Plan
Pig Destroyer
Opeth
The Ocean Collective(Awesome band, they're more like a doom metal symphony, sweet stuff check it out)
Meshuggah
The Black Dahlia Murder
Amon Amarth
Dethklok (I hope I don't keep getting crap about them, I think they're really good)
Gojira
Ion Dissonance
HORSE the band
Isis (would Isis be considered extreme, Turner does growl a lot)
