What Is Riffing?!

Well a few months ago I had speakers at school and decided to use them to listen to my earphones and not hurt my ears!

I put on some Jimmi Hendrix and some guy who is into rock just assumed that I knew everything about a guitar!

He stated that Jimmi Hendrix is a legend or whatever and then said that at concerts, Jimmi would just smoke a bunch and let the guitar "riff", I dont even know if I am spelling it right!

I just nodded my head because there were people around and I didnt want to look like a loser that doesnt know anything, well I am a loser and everybody knows, but pretending to know what he meant gave me credibility!

So someone please tell me what this means, period

Usually a riff is referred to as a set of chords strummed, or (less often) picked. It forms the main, memorable part of a song or more likely the intro. There are a ton of examples:

Intro to:

Substitute - The Who
Spread your love - BRMC

etc, etc, etc.

Riff = the guitar bit you usually remember a song by.
