Santana becomes the higest paid pitcher in MLB history. The exact numbers were not disclosed, but those in the know state he is going to 6 year extension for $139 million, plus a $7 million signing bonus, which brings his annual average iincome to about $22.8 million.

I'm a Mets fan and I am thrilled about the addition of Santana. The best pitcher in baseball over the past 5 years (you could argue Beckett is the best right now). They got Santana for pretty much nothing, when comparing to what they got in return. Local radio was calling it a highway robbery, considering the Red Sox and Yankees were actually offering better prospects and even ML proven players as well. I don't think Santana is going to be able to put up the big numbers towards the end his contract, so I think he was over paid, but that is the market and the Mets really have the money and they actually needed this guy. If they can win at least a title or two, I think it was worth all the money. They are also going to be in a new stadium next year, so they are going to have to fill in the seats, so that was another factor in getting Santana. Mets not making the World Series will be a big disappointment, after this signing.

Woot hes out of the AL! Now I can laugh when the Mets really own the Yankees. I'm just glad he isnt on the Sox, cause they were gonna trade Ellsbury and Buchholz for him, and some others. It really looked like he was gonna be on the Sox then idk what happened.

He should own NL hitting no? Look how good he did in the AL, much better offenses. NL still got some good ones but you know what I mean.

I don't even remember anyone on the Dbacks other than Webb. Who are in their starting staff this year?

I thought he was going to the Red Sox in the beginning as well, because the Yankees weren't going to trade Cano and/or two of their young starters. They would have had easily the best starting pitching staff with the top two pitchers in baseball and and would become locks for the World Series and title. Shocked and glad it didn't happen.

As for him doing well in the NL, I think the pitcher always has the advantage when joining a league where nobody knows your stuff. There is a little bit of inter league play, but for the most part, Santana is a mystery to NL pitching, which is a big boost for him. Also, he will be pitching at Shea Stadium, which is a notoriously pitcher friendly ball park, albeit for one year. Supposedly the new stadium is being designed to be pitcher friendly as well, but its really difficult to judge before it is actually played in. I'm concerned about his age, 29 isn't old, but it isn't young either. He's in his prime, but I wouldn't be surprised if we notice him start going downhill after a few years. He's not a skinny guy and he's a power pitcher. As we know, power pitchers tend to lose their stuff after a certain age and have to adjust their pitching style. I hope he can do that. I think the Mets have to do something within the next couple of years, while Santana is still dominating.

He's only 29 next month, has 2 Cy Youngs, the biggest contract for a pitcher in the history of baseball... life won't get much better for him unless the Mets win the Series. Then he would officially have the best possible life.

Minnesota was basically robbed by NY. They got 4 or 5 prospects and they aren't even the Mets top Minor League players for probably the best pitcher in the world today.

It was 4 players, I'd say 3 are still prospects, while Gomes is going to be Major League ready. He's going to improve at the major league level, mainly his hitting. He's extremely fast and will be in the league leaders in stolen basis, if he can get on base. He's still young, but once he gets more patient and selective at the plate, he will become a fan favorite easily. Of the 3 prospected pitcher, Mulvey and Humber have a lot of potential, but nothing like Scott Kazmir. The last pitcher is unknown to everyone. That said, this was highway robbery, because of how good Santana was, but not really because of the players the Twins got, because there is definitely talent and potential there. Also, consider how well the Twins groom their young players into stars, there is hope there.

That's pretty much all he has over Reyes, which doesn't mean much if he doesn't get on base. He's the only player I liked that we gave up, but this trade was a no brainer for the Mets. A steal.

If I were the Twins I would rather have Phil Hughes by himself than the four guys from the Mets. The fact that the Twins could not get Fernando Martinez is pretty pathetic. Humber and Mulvey are going to be back-end of the rotation starters. Gomez has no plate discipline. I think Guerra is the best player in this deal. He can be a number 2 starter, but he is only 18 and is a long way away.

As a Red Sox fan, I am thrilled with this trade. The Red Sox never wanted to give up 4 really good young players and sign Santana to an extension. Theo successfully kept him away from the Yankees and he went to the NL. It was a great job by the front office.
