View Full Version : Zednik gets his throat slit (NHL)
http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=229379&hubname=
With the Sabres leading 4-3 midway through the third period, forward Olli Jokinen - who was being checked - fell forward during play and his skate accidently caught Zednik's neck.
Zednik bled profusely from his neck, but was able to skate toward his bench where he was met by the trainer and immediately ushered to the locker room.
Zednik is listed as stable and is being transported to a hospital.

DO NOT LOOK AT THIS IF YOU ARE SQUEAMISH (http://www2.andyserver.com:8083/uploads/zednik.jpg)
Disclaimer: My buddy took a screenshot of the tv right after they blew the whistle and Zednik got off the ice. Do not look at it if you don't like blood. You've been warned.

Kinda reminded me of when Clint Malarchuck got his throat slit. This time it was a sabres player with the injury.

You can see blood just squirt out from his neck on the ice in the last few seconds here. Like a hose.

That is such a strange injury, albeit a life threatening one. Thank God he got immediate medical attention.

Yeah, if it wasn't for both medical staffs working together, I don't see how he would have lived. I hope to see him on the ice soon.

That's why they need all players to wear a neck guard. We don't need another incident like this.

yea but have you ever wore one? they are the most annoying things..kills your mobility and is just a pain in the neck.

While it may kill your mobility...it may save your life. A metaphoric pain in the neck is much better than a literal pain in the neck. Ask Clint Malarchuck and Zednik...they just might agree with me.

yeah but these two events are pretty freak accidents. if visors aren't mandatory then i really don't see neck guards becoming anytime in the future.

The Malarchuk incident and this one are 18 years apart. It's got to happen more often than that for the NHL to mandate a neck guard. The players could just wear turtle necks if they are that afraid of getting their throats slit. It's not fool-proof, but it offers at least minimal protection without inhibiting their head's motion.

The same thing happened to a goalie like 10 years ago, but much worse.

I heard last night that the artery was hanging on by a thread. It was explained that if it had been totally severed it would have retracted into his body and they wouldn't have been able to save him

I agree that neck guards are annoying, everyone used to just cut it open and take the padding out, then re-sew it up. But nowadays even if it is a freak event, I guarantee you'll see some sort of motion to implement neck guards maybe not in the NHL but Junior leagues etc. I don't remember wearing a neck guard in youth hockey, but it was mandatory in high school.

In BC, when we played minor hockey (youth hockey), neck guards were mandatory. You get used to them, and they don't really bother you, however if you haven't been wearing one (for years) and then decide to wear one, it's gonna be really really annoying. I remember when we played kids from Washington State, they didn't wear neckguards, but they had to wear mouthguards. We'd usually have to play kids who were 2-4 years older than us so it would be fair. :)
I heard on the radio yesterday that the kids nowadays wear neckguards that is like a kevlar cloth and is not as bad as the old school cardboard-like ones. But i don't see the NHL doing it, and I don't blame them.
