Despite Red's inability to make any real public statement, Japanese publication Nikkei has it that Toshiba president Atsutoshi Nishida will be announcing the final discontinuation of HD DVD tomorrow, as well as halted sales of hardware and media by March (as in days from now). Apparently Toshiba will pull its units from retail shelves, but has no intention to give burned early adopters any refunds (no kidding?); it sounds like the ceasefire will include the bare PC drives as well, so those hoping to keep using HD DVD as a personal data storage medium probably won't have much luck. Apparently the announcement will come alongside Toshiba's plans to build new semiconductor fabs, which we're sure they'll try to spin as an advancement that far overshadows the hill of beans (read: hundreds of millions) they've lost in the format war. Hahah owned. I was looking at the Circuit City catalogue this weekend and saw HD DVD players for $199... No shit. I bet they sold like hotcakes too because people are so fucking ignorant. "Omg HD ... DVD" Wow must be like DVDs but better quality. "Omg blu-ray, wtf I hate people with bluetooth headsets."

What the fuck are you talking about. Do me a favor and punch your self in the nuts. /offtopic
Anywho, I bought the HD dvd adaptor for my xbox. I always felt like Blu would win, but i stayed with the red side due to the price. Now I just have to wait for the ps3 to drop in price one more time. I'm just happy its finally "offically" over and we can mass adapt sooner then later.

You know, those HD-DVD players that scaled regular dvds to near HD quality, that was a pretty nice feature because regular dvds actually did almost look HD quality.
HD-DVD seemed like the easier transition.

I'm glad I didn't buy either. I would have preferred the more affordable one to win though. I was actually leaning toward the Xbox 360 add on since I could use it as a hd-dvd drive for my pc too.
I agree, regular DVDs that are upconverted don't look that bad.

I almost feel sorry for you, all getting a boner over this news and thinking it is ruining people's lives. It's just a format, no one is getting "owned" you simple, unoriginal fuck. $199 isn't even a good deal anyways, I got mine for $99 with the 5 free HD-DVDS months ago.... guess what... it plays DVDS TOO! OMG! a high def DVD player that plays HD-DVDS and DVDs for $99 and $100 in free movies..... total ownage right there! Dumb fuckin' kid, go get a clue.

When DVD first came out, everyone was "Oh my god! It's like real life!"
When BRD and HD came out, again, everyone was like "Oh my god! It's like real life!"
There'll always be something better. Just you wait a few years.

Ok good, now just one format. Prices had better drop a crapload on the discs before I even consider buying.
So who wants in the pool to see how long before Blu Ray dies from being pushed out by downloads, or not even taking off in the first place?
I say 2-3 years and we will be completely free of the tyranny of hard media.

Blu-ray's not gonna die, cause even if we can download the movies we still need to buy the games for the ps3. Unless they crack the ps3 which hasn't happened yet.

I still don't understand why these hd dvd vs blu ray threads keep popping up in the video games forum.

Blu-Ray is in the Playstation 3
Xbox 360 comes with a HD-DVD addon.
Sony is the large player in Blu-Ray.
Microsoft is a big partner in HD-DVD.
etc etc
If Blu-Ray became defunct a massive attraction to the PS3 would become defunct.
Use your brain.

His stupidity got under my skin, I'm actually glad that Bluray has won, the BS is over and we can go on with our lives. Seeing as I have no HDDVDS for the HD player other than the free ones and it's still an upscaling DVD player. I could sell the thing and the DVDS and make more than what I payed for it if I wanted to. When people act like a certain format was so much better than the other and people got "owned", I want to tell that person to get a life.

Well, I'll be one of the first to admit I was wrong. I said HD-DVD would win because of the price difference. I was really wrong. I thought Blu-Ray would have been to big of a step up from where the majority is now. Glad I haven't bought either yet. Still need an HDTV first.

Well I'm just glad that blu-ray won because it means all the people I know who thought otherwise were wrong.

Indeed.
I must admit, I bought Lost, season 3 on regular Dvd and the upscaling made it look quite nice. Not quite as good as on HD channells, but not far off.
