View Full Version : APB to Change the Face of MMO's Forever?

"This being the Game Developers Conference, Jones spent the first portion of his talk going through his design philosophy for APB. It begins with defining what the term MMO means. "When you say MMO now," Jones said, "immediately they think you've got to go up against World of Warcraft" The term has become almost synonymous with MMORPG and has become tainted with a stigma. Jones wants to make a multiplayer online game with dedicated servers, but wants it to be cool. As he noted, when your friends come over and you ask them to play Call of Duty or Halo, they think the idea is cool. If they come over and you start talking about your World of Warcraft character, they get turned off.
That may generalize things a bit but the point is clear: Things like AK-47s are instantly recognizable whereas their "geek" counterparts (a Braggarts Bow was cited as an example) are niche. Jones' advice is to, "Make games contemporary; make them cool, it lowers the barrier." This is why he wants to rephrase the question from, "What would you do with an MMO?" to "If you have dedicated servers behind a game, how would you embrace them?" APB is an attempt to take the games Jones likes to make and use dedicated servers to take them to the next level."
"To say we were impressed is putting it simply. In a room filled with hundreds of developers eager to see what Jones had cooked up, we sat in a sea of people who make games for a living overheard saying everything from, 'Oh wow!' to, 'Why didn't I think of that?'"

Seems pretty damn amazing, hopefully the final product is spit shined and polished.

You didn't hear it from the guy who created Grand Theft Auto. And the fact that other developers were really impressed with it is a good sign.

Grand Theft Auto is so fucking overrated. People like it because you can kill lots of people, the story is always fucking retarded and the areas are always ridiculously linear, you could do more in Shenmue, which is ancient.
That being said, Rockstar isn't god, and the reasoning behind why he thinks this game will be "revolutionary" is absolutely baseless. Lol AK IS BETER THAN BOW, U LYK GUNZ RITE?
Rockstar is EASILY the MTV of video game companies.

Overrated - GTA might be the only huge game (Halo, Zelda, MGS) that isn't overrated. The only reason people aren't still playing GTA 3 is because Rockstar has a habit of making their previous installments obsolete. I'm sure I'm not the only person that still goes back and plays GTA SA, which came out 3 years ago.
Story - You've got to be the only person that has not yet realized GTA is not about the story. If you want a good story, read a book or watch a movie.
Linear areas - lol.
Rockstar is MTV - hmmm. Harmonix makes music games and is owned by MTV, so I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say Harmonix is the MTV of video game companies.
Back on topic, the game does sound pretty great. Might be the only MMO I'll play for more than an hour or two.

GTA is overrated, and most of the fact of it being overrated is becuase of hookers hot coffee mod and killing random people- everything that draws in the common retarded gamer. Also halo 2 and 3 might be overrated but Halo1 wasnt at all. Zelda and MGS arent overrated though. and neither is Mario- which is one of the biggest gaming "series" in history.
story- the stories suck, and dont give us that overrused comeback "if the story sucks just go read a book" You cant play a game and read a book at the same time therefore so Game with a good story > Game with a bad story
Linear- it is, its just go from there to here then here to there, but hey you can kill random people on the way, awesome!
rockstar is MTV- his point went COMPLETELY over your head. so far over you wouldnt even see it as a speck high up in the sky.

Wow, I don't think I've met anyone who really hates GTA. The third one was released back in 2001. How less linear could you get than the levels in GTA 3? The PS2 wasn't exactly a powerhouse of a machine with CPU at 300 mhz and 32 mb ram.
And approaching a game from a different perspective is exactly what makes revolutionary games.

Yes, with slightly updated graphics and cars, and changing the race/stereotype of their main character, GTA is truly the pinnacle of creativity.
Story - You've got to be the only person that has not yet realized GTA is not about the story. If you want a good story, read a book or watch a movie.
That's my point. You know what GTA is about? Shooting people ad nauseum, and people eat it up like it's the greatest fucking thing since sliced bread. It's not like an FPS where it requires some iota of skill, it's a system where you lock on to pedestrians and fire automatic weapons. Who the fuck cares? Certainly not real gamers, kids made this game popular. Retarded ones.
Linear areas - lol.
Yes, linear areas. Lots of the same city blocks painted differently, with a script in place that generates random cars and pedestrians. Out of this massive world, maybe 30 of these building you can actually enter.
Rockstar is MTV - hmmm. Harmonix makes music games and is owned by MTV, so I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say Harmonix is the MTV of video game companies.
You totally missed my point. Rockstar makes games that appeal to the bloodthirsty, slightly autistic 13 year old with a carrot-top Jewfro and the T-Shirt that says "I fucked your mom". They are all about appeal to this particular person, and while I will admit that the beginning parts of Vice City were fun, the game got ridiculously old and repetative VERY fast.
In closing, the only reason to ever like a GTA game is if shooting random people is somehow theraputic to you. If it is, I really don't care one way or the other, but don't make this "game" deeper than it really is, a murder simulator, and not even a good one, like Manhunt. Just a mediocre one.

That's fine, I'll even give you that GTA 3 was revolutionary to it's genre. But the following installments are all GTA 3 clones with the same basic shit and bigger places to do them in.

I always got bored in GTA when I had decent weapons and a nice bike. I'd just ride around, shoot up a bit, try to do some nice jumps. I never felt the quests/missions/whatever were that much fun.
But back to APB. I had actually never heard of it however after reading up a bit it seems pretty cool. I think I'd get bored of the outfit part after a while, but the gameplay would more than make up for it, if it's balanced and not buggy. I wonder which side/faction will be more popular and bigger, and what kind of effect it'd have on the city, if any. It'd be cool to live in "Escape from L.A." criminal world.

GTA is a decent game, just looking at the impact GTA3 had on the PS2 tell us that alone.
But you know what, its become so popular I guess the impressionable moronic youth are finding it cool to hate it. Grow the fuck up, if you can tell me what games on the PS2 offers the same amount of content, freedom, gameplay as the GTA series you might just be pushing a rather stupid point, however fact is you can't even do that which just puts your point somewhere between irritating and gay.

The Hot Coffee mod wasnt even around until after San Andreas came out, and the hype had died down, and all of the overrating was over. All the mod did was bring the hype back up again, and what's with this killing people idea? You can kill people in any M rated game. Does that mean every M rated game is overrated?
I admit I was wrong saying MGS and Zelda are overrated, I was just using examples. And yeah, Halo 1 was pretty great at the time, but aside from online multiplayer and dual wielding, Halo 1, 2 and 3 are pretty much the same games.
Yes, I used the overused "go read a book" line, but only because people should know that, in general, you don't play games for the stories. Sure, some have great stories, but the majority of them are pretty bad. Anyway, it goes without saying that if you want a good story first and foremost, do not play GTA or most other games for that matter. Also, a game with a good story is not always better than a game with a bad story. Mario vs almost any game with a great story. Mario wins.
You saying that GTA is linear is just making me think that you're arguing just for the sake of arguing.
"its just go from there to here then here to there"
Ok then, I'd like to know, what games don't do that?
Halo - Kill these aliens, move on to the next...
MGS - Go to this area, talk to someone/kill someone, go to the next...
Guitar Hero/Sports Games - Beat this song/team, move on to the next...
RPG's are about the only games that aren't linear.
I was just joking around with the whole Rockstar/MTV thing. Looking back, it wasn't as funny as it seemed at the time.

Yes, with slightly updated graphics and cars, and changing the race/stereotype of their main character, GTA is truly the pinnacle of creativity.
- Funny how you left out the setting. That alone makes each game feel completely different. And each game adds more then enough new stuff to make the previous game look outdated. The new city and addition of helicopters in Vice City alone makes GTA 3 look bad, and the new, much larger city, and addition of Planes in San Andreas makes Vice City Look bad
- I'll admit when GTA 3 came out, that's what excited me the most, and I was a kid, 12 or 13, but like I said in the my other post, any M rated game is like that, And yes killing people is fun. So is Driving, Wrecking the car you were driving after attempting huge jumps, avoiding the cops, flying planes and helicopters, along with all of the other things you can do in GTA.
Yes, linear areas. Lots of the same city blocks painted differently, with a script in place that generates random cars and pedestrians. Out of this massive world, maybe 30 of these building you can actually enter.
- Again, not many games do things different from what you're saying. Halo, MGS, Zelda etc. all generate the same NPC's too. Who cares if you can't enter buildings? If you could, you'd just be here complaining about how you couldn't go underneath the bed, or move the furniture or something.
- Yes, I was joking about the MTV thing. But if you think Vice City got repetative fast, then what games don't you think get repetative?
In closing, the only reason to ever like a GTA game is if shooting random people is somehow theraputic to you. If it is, I really don't care one way or the other, but don't make this "game" deeper than it really is, a murder simulator, and not even a good one, like Manhunt. Just a mediocre one.
- As mentioned above, there is a lot more to do in GTA games then murder people, though that is among the funnest things to do.
That's fine, I'll even give you that GTA 3 was revolutionary to it's genre. But the following installments are all GTA 3 clones with the same basic shit and bigger places to do them in.
- All good sequels are the same basic shit with new additions. Most sequels that try to do things differently fail.
To put it simply, GTA is not overrated.

Wow. Elephant you're the most uppity little bitch I've ever seen. I don't even see why GTA is the main focus of this fucking stupid argument you guys have going on. Just because you drive and have guns doesn't mean it's a GTA clone. The game was just announced and already you guys give your narrow fucking jaded view. The new features like the insane character customization and the Last.fm integration are enough to at least warrant a "Might be cool" reaction.
Oh and I hope everyone in the video games section has learned to ignore anything Rand0m spews.
