PS1.
I had a sega, it was alright but the games were just arcade style, couldn't play them long enough.
Then along came the PS1 with games like Resident Evil, Silent Hill and best of all... FF7.
Never owned a SNES.

Definitely the NES. It had a massive library of games and at the time you couldn't really beat it, unless you took a trip to the arcade.
Edit: This thread needs a poll.

Which one made the most money over the course of its lifetime? Something tells me PS2 might be up there since it's still overtaking the new generation of consoles.

Not yet. I've been caught up in a bunch of other games, but I'll get Xenogears before the year is up. Definitely. Probably. Yeah.
I'll get it with my next order of books from Amazon.

Better than any of the crap the PS2 had for it's first year.

The NES is the correct answer. It dominated the post atari days and had no real competition until SNES and Sega came out. Everyone I knew in grade school had an NES and it had hundreds of games.

Oh and anyone who was born in the early 1980s like myself (84 to be exact) had the best life time of games to play. Been playing since I was 4 and I've definately gotta say video games are so good they ruined my chance of actually making something of myself. Hell I'm not even looking for a job even though I should. Just collecting unemployment and awaiting the release of Smash Bros Brawl, getting pussy, and getting high. =/ Some life huh?

1982 here
The official golden era would be between the beginning of 1982 through the beginning of 1986. Most of the greatest innovations in gameplay and design took place during this time. And many of the leaps that brought about the influences for all video games today happened during this time. I'd probably stretch that to 1987, when Final Fantasy came out, and basically wrote the format for the RPG genre.

Dreamcast, Playstation 3, and the Gamecube are examples of consoles that are not or not yet the best systems for their time, no matter how much you like them. They were or are failures in comparison to some of the older ones and it's too soon to be judging this generation.
I don't know where to check how much profit each one made, but I have a feeling it comes down to the SNES and PS2.

I was born in 89 but I still agree with you. Maybe I'm just not a graphics whore like the others of my generation...NES kicks ass. My NES is older than me, still works, and I still play that shit!
dudes, I can't belive this has gone on for 3 pages. Famicom or N E S, Anyone who thinks otherwise is ignorant.
