500hp V8 Ariel Atom

Hot on the heels of the news of the 1000hp/tonne Caterham Seven RS, Ariel has revealed its own 500hp Atom variant. The exposed tube-frame road-legal race car is already a track-day favorite, and the bump to nearly double the Bugatti Veyron’s power-to-weight ratio will no doubt make it even more fun in the right hands.

The similarities to the Caterham project are immense. Also developed in conjunction with RS Developments, the Atom is powered by a Russell Savory-designed supercharged 2.4L V8 engine that produces peak power at an incredible 10,000rpm. The all-alloy motor features five-valve cylinders and a dry sump oil system. Mated to a Sadev six-speed sequential gearbox, the Ariel Atom 500 is about as close to an open-wheeled formula car as a person can get in a road-legal car aside from the Caterham RS and the Caparo T1.

Blurring the line between race-inspired and race-worthy even further, the Sadev gearbox is flatshift capable, meaning the driver doesn’t even need to lift the throttle to shift up, the computer and gearbox taking care of all the work with the flap of a paddle. Launch and traction control are also standard, and likely almost necessary in a car that weighs a mere 500kg, thanks in part to a large amount of carbon fiber bodywork.

Ensuring the lucky few who get their hands on one of these creations don’t have to cut short their day at the track because of fading or inadequate brakes, Alcon four-pot calipers grace all four corners behind Dymag wheels. Aerodynamics are very important to the new Atom 500, as even the wishbones get aerofoil deign and a large rear wing produces downforce for high-speed cornering.

That will be fast. I am almost certain of it.

i dont understand.

how is it going to apply all that power to the ground? in a car that weighs that much, with that much power, how is it possible that its going to have so much usable power to the gound to produce good Numbers?

Probably some sort of traction control system.

Fiiiiiiiiiiight!!!

Gotta see some group testage with the Seven Levante and this being compared for performance.

I wonder how much this one will set you back too. The Levante cost about £115,000.

With an Atom, RPMs are what give it speed, not horsepower. The car is too light to use gobs of horsepower.

Horsepower is a product of revs. Torque multiplied by revs equals power (more of less). The supercharged RST-V8 (as mentioned in the article) generates 500hp+ at about 10,000 rpm and only 300lbft of torque at 8500rpm.

You're sort of right though, massive torque is less important for a light car like 500kg Sevens or Atoms, less mass to move equals less load on the engine (and brakes, and tyres, and suspension...). Hence Chapman's 'Performance through light weight.'

If I wanted to kill myself, I'd buy that car. Suicide by Atom.

Holy fuck that's a tiny V8. I thought my 4.6L was small.

Err, you're right. My mind hasn't been in the game lately.

Hmmmm if the frame was made out of aluminum and magnesium i could see this working... a high displacement high rpm motorcycle engine would make all the difference too , just to cut down on more weight. Than again its not the car or the bike its the driver or rider that makes the difference.

How much does it cost? The original Atom is like £23,000 which is amazing value. One day soon I'm going to have to get me one, it just has to be amazing!

Well the Caterham Seven Levante costs £115,000, but there was a comment in one article I read that said that Ariel were trying to keep costs down, so probably less than that.
