View Full Version : Is a PS3 useless unless you have a high-def TV?

I've got a regular TV. It's not high-def or a flat-screen and the size is average. Would it be stupid to purchase a $400 PS3 with that kind of a TV? If it factors into the equation in any way, I want the console for playing GTA IV at the time.

Not really, High-def is just a awesome thing to have but you can still play w/o it. However, some games have really small text that's a little difficult to read on a SDTV but you'll be fine.

I haven't played 360 and I don't plan on purchasing one, so I couldn't answer that question nor does it really matter for my purpose. Thanks for the response CSPope.

Nah, its fine, but its awesome to play it on a high def screen. The 32 ones arent too expensive, you should be able to purchase it in no time, especially with your low taxes.

Well you wouldn't be missing much in the way of games, not many are actually in 1080p. However the extra money for teh Blu-Ray and HD content will sort of go to waste.

all systems will suck equally if it's not equipped with a hdtv. especially if it's a ps3.

The "tv doesn't make the system," huh? That's great... except you make no fucking sense, and you're continually not grasping the fact that if a console is incompatible with the medium it is to function with, then the end result can be shit. It's not a waste. My TV isn't HD either and I have a blast on the PS3, though it does have slots for component cables which is nice. Only drawback is that some games are made for HD resolutions (Warhawk and Pixeljunk Monsters being a couple of them) so the game's UI will scale itself down automatically to compensate for the uh...non-wideness that HD resolutions have.

Edit: Scratch that, all the games are made for HD res, but only on some of them will it make a huge difference aside from the picture quality.

You're not missing out on anything...that is until you actually play the system on an HDTV...Dear gawd it's beautiful. You can always get a decently priced 24 inch HD monitor on Newegg.com if you're desperate for some of that sweet, sweet high def picture.

I wasn't really impressed by the PS3 until I got a HDTV to be honest, but there weren't that many game out at that time so that contributed.

GTA IV is going to be worth getting a PS3 alone and then when you are ready, upgrade your TV.

OP calm down man, if you did some research you would know that the PS3 allows for composite output, meaning any TV that has standard rca jacks (the red, yellow and white jacks) will work fine.

Sure upgrading your TV to an HD set will allow for improved picture quality, but it's not mandatory.

It's not necessary, but makes for a way better gaming experience. Games like Warhawk and Ratchet and Clank are just meh on a regular TV but on a 1080p will make your eyes shoop some whoops.

that's like asking if your car is useless because you don't have a porsche. Of course you can play it without a HD tv but it won't be as fun or exciting.

meh i think hdtv's are kinda overrated, i have one hdtv and i have an sdtv in my room, and yeah the HD is nice sometimes but really its not that special, plus i find that most HD channels have an overly sharp picture, i guess thats more the camera used to film it rather than the TV.
so yeah you will be fine with a SDTV, especially for video games.
