a city man threw his wife's pet ferret against the wall during an argument with her, police said. The little animal is OK, but the man faces 21/2 years in jail if convicted of animal cruelty — the same jail term he can receive on a charge of assaulting his wife during the argument, police said.

Sgt. John Arahovites said officers were sent to the home of Jeffrey Bodah, 55, of 40 Newcomb St., after dispatchers received a phone call from a woman who sounded like she was being beaten.

When they arrived at 11:05 a.m. Monday, they found Bodah and his wife arguing.

The woman told police they were arguing over food stamps and money, and he had demanded money from her, police said.

During the argument, he threw a remote control at her and began placing her pets outside the apartment in the hallway, Arahovites said. Officers found a bird cage in the hallway when they arrived, he said.

The woman told police Bodah picked up her pet ferret and threw it at her in the hallway, Arahovites said.

"The ferret went over her head and struck the wall and dropped to a landing," Arahovites said. "She retrieved it."

Well it sucks and the guy should be punished, but 21 years for something that I believe happened in a fit of passion. I think he should face some punishment. And I never wished death on the guy who threw the pup over the cliff. I value the life of a human more than an animal.

Ferrets are very resilient creatures, mine do all kinds of crazy stuff you would think would hurt like a bitch and they just keep on truckin'.

Someone needs to edit the story and say the man was a soldier.

While I think animal cruelty should be punishable with jailtime, I really don't think an incident with no injury to the animal deserves any jailtime, let alone two years.

Lack of injury be damned, he could have fucked it up horribly. Plus he's shown he can't control his temper, so what happens when he's angry at her and there's a baby around instead of a remote or a ferret? He threw a life form that was helpless just because he was upset with her. That's inexcusable regardless of what the life form is, I think 2 years is fine for his sorry ass.

I think there could be other factors to take into account, like maybe he tried to toss the ferret to her as she was in the hallway, she ducked, and the ferret hit the wall. As long as the ferret is fine, I don't see why he should be punished with jailtime. Also, he DIDN'T throw a baby against the wall, he threw an animal. At the most he should get a few weeks and community service.

Since when is tossing/throwing a living animal at anything a good idea? And why would she duck if he was just tossing it? Wouldn't a toss mean it was going to her chest and make ducking kind of moot anyway? And how is throwing it at her in anger any better than throwing it at a wall? In either case, it would mean he had no regard for its well-being, and in the event of trying to hit her with it, it means he was actively trying to harm her.

Besides the article says they were already in the hallway when it happened, not him in the apartment and her in the hallway.

And life is life: human or animal. It's unacceptable to show disregard for any life just because of anger at someone else. It's also unacceptable to go all "HULK SMASH!" and throw things in an argument.

I'm still fine with 2 years. Dude's too old to be acting like that. No excuse for not knowing better.
