Just got my first Guitar and its electric too.
Turns out that guitars don't 'automatically play songs' and there are all sort of 'chords' and 'skills' a person needs to have.
As you can imagine a google search will turn up about 700 courses, DVDs, Books all claiming to be 'the best beginners method ever invented!',
but,
What would you guys recommend as a great 'learn to play' course/programme out there?
*I am definitely one of those people who learns by the more fun, entertaining way and not so much good with dry 'technical' stuff.
Either way...
..Your pick for the best 'Learn Guitar' beginners courseware??

To tell you the truth, trying to take online lessons isn't very
effective. If you're gonna take lessons, find a real instructor
around your area. Being able to have someone sit down in
front of you is waaay better.
That said, you can get going with a few DVD's. For my first few
months or so of playing guitar, I just noodled around, trying to
play KISS songs, to get a feel for the guitar and familiarize myself.
Then, I moved on to this (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Fender-Getting-Started-On-Electric-Guitar-DVD?sku=961320)DVD, which really helped a lot.
If you've ever got any questions, feel free to PM me.
If you teach yourself how to play songs without tabs, you'll become
a much better player much quicker.

Muchly appreciated Edge.
I do have a superb guitar teacher lined up for weekly lessons but it will be a little while before I get in.
I wanted to get some sort of headstart and I will check out that DVD... looks more like the 'simple approach' I would do better with.
Thx!

Learn the C A G E D system, it's a good way to learn the 5 most used chords and their formations up and down the neck. It will be a good tool to have in the future and I can speak from experience that it will really open you to a whole world in guitar playing.

I figured out these are 'chords' and I don't know if this fits what you are saying but someone told me to learn 'House of the Rising Sun' because it has these '5 most common chords' and if you can play that - you will be able to play most other songs with the same 5.
Thanks smooth.. will add that to my adventures heh.

Thanks Ernie, a few of those were great in that they gave straightforward simple basic visual demonstration of these 'chords' and so that helps.
The one I am really enjoying is:
