View Full Version : How I feed soundboard to phone line and record

I thought I'd offer another solution since I looked hard and didn't like the main tips on soundboard setups. I created my own but should be doable by others.

Well, I didn't like the speakerphone setups most have nor the expensive TeleTool and I only have a cordless phone anyway. I think the TeleTool plugs into the phone's handset. I do have lots of audio cables and adapters lying around though. I figured there's got to be decent way to get the soundboard audio fed right into the phone line.

First I downloaded ModemSpy. It dials and records pretty nicely. The automatic gain control is crappy when there's silence so I uncheck those boxes. I also make sure to record at the default setup since it the cleanest and best sounding.

Then I bought a phone call recording controller from Radio Shack. Item#43-228. Simple and cheaper than the other model they had. I also bought a mono to stereo 1/8 adapter plug.

The controller hooks right into the phone jack on my computer voice modem and also has two wires for sending the phone audio to a recorder or playing the recording into the phone line. I simply want to feed my computer audio (stereo) into the phone line (mono, the reason for the adapter) so the prankee can hear the fake celebrity. That was the easy part.

My computer's audio output is super weak and just couldn't be heard on the phone line. I had to amplify it somehow. Realizing I had an audio receiver in the same room, I could easily amplify the sound with that. I ran my computer's output into the receiver's CD input and then I ran the receiver's headphone jack to the phone line controller. At 80% volume on the receiver, Miss Cleo or whoever sounds loud and normal. I can then fine tune the volume with my keyboard volume control. I could probably get more amplification if I instead hooked the receiver's speaker out jacks to the phone line controller but it's not necessary for most of the soundboards.

You can find one example of my pranks here: http://f1.pg.briefcase.yahoo.com/talkradio@sbcglobal.net

It's the wave file. I like when she consults her boyfriend if he played football in high school after Miss Cleo asks her.

The last part of my setup is that my cordless phone has a headset jack. Since I never use my headset, I broke the microphone off it so nobody can hear me or room noise when the headset it plugged into the cordless phone.

It works really well. I usually have 3 or 4 soundboards loaded up to switch between depending on who answers.

The Jack Black(by Andrew) and the Cleo Ouiji board (by 2400 bps) are pretty good for tricking most.
