I want to learn how to sing hard rock. Two of my favorite singers are Maynard Keenan of Tool and Corey Taylor of Stone Sour. I have very little singing ability right now. What is a good way to practice? Should I get a vocal trainer?

Learning other instruments first can help you develop an ear for recognizing pitches etc. But if you don't want to do that I'd just get lessons from someone, cause it's probably pretty hard to do it without.

After singing since the age of 12 and now 6 years later I'm a good rock singer. I looked to Maynard as the "model" of my voice, but he's a tough one. The best thing you can do is do singing lessons, in a year you'll be able to do what it took for me in six. I took alot of wrong steps and sang wrong for a while and it was little accidents that set me on the right path. I have a good voice, but I still am struggling with my voice. Maynard is a freak of nature when it comes to his voice. He probably spent years of hours a day getting it right. Not to mention each voice has a style it fits in perfectly, Maynard found his.

Corey Taylor and Maynard Keenan? So you want to learn how to sing like a faggot? Go suck on a cock.
Problem solved.

It'd be easier for you to take lessons, and learn to sing first and find out how good you are or how you sound before trying to match Maynards vocals or Corey Taylors vocals. Don't try to immitate them, learning to develop your own sound and voice is far more important for starters.
