I've been playing Ninja Spirit for the Turbo-Grafix 16 and damn it is awesome. It's a great game that got forgotten along with the system it came out for. I'd recommend downloading a TG16 emulator just to play it.

Crysis got alot of shit for its steep hardware requirements, been in the mists of the new consoles uprising with the worlds largest gaming companies scrambling to explore the what the new consoles offer, money and media attention was drawn off the PC platform.
When Crysis blew its way onto the PC platform, half the worlds gaming media didn't even blink scrambling for a shot of the next blockbuster for the consoles, the gaming communities, heart broken that it wouldn't run amazing on their PC's, angry that it neglected the consoles backlashed against it pushing a negative atmosphere around it. Leading to eventually a rather dull, uneventful launch and has been quiet ever since.
The world 'next-generation' is thrown around alot with the new consoles, however they are built from PC tech that has been around for years. Crysis, completely re-visualising the way a game looks is truely next gen. Regardless of how it plays, its multiplayer, its hardware requirements, the sheer amount of raw rendering power it throws on the screen has done what no game has done for years, and actually blown its players away, the graphical leap its made over its predecessors only contiues to inspire and awe the world.
It helps that the gameplay is just as solid, smart intelligent AI, vast expansive well populated levels, the only area that it fails in is been released a tad to bit early (v1.1 or 1.2 are supieror in their performance).

I wouldn't call Crysis underrated at all. People practically ejaculate rainbows when talking about that game.
Roguelikes in general. Fantastic genre, looked down upon because of the minimalistic graphics. The games always look extremely simple at a glance, but the complexity behind them is amazing.
Starsiege: Tribes and Tribes 2. Neither got the love they deserved, and both have a small, but devoted fanbase to this day. Tribes 2 is slowly bleeding to death because of the (fantastic at the time) master server setup. Since T2 requires you to register the game to play, it's nigh impossible to create a new account now because of the lack of CD-Keys, even though the game has been officially released for free. The only thing that could save it is a different form of registration on the master server, maybe similar to Allegiance.
And speaking of which: Allegiance is also fantastic. Freely available too. A great space combat game that mixes RTS elements into it. All multiplayer, very tactical, and very good. Worthy to check out as well (free allegiance googled should do the trick).
Freespace 1 and 2. Both some of the best space combat sims to this day. Both also available free to download with some digging. Very atmospheric despite the dated graphics.

The graphics were good, the storyline was good, the physics were good, the AI was good, the weapons were good, etc. etc.
But the multiplayer's elite hardcore SUCKAGE killed it. I completed it on the hardest setting in 3 days and looked forward to playing MP, but MP sucked balls, and the SP had no replayability except for having fun throwing grenades into tin shacks and shooting people, but i have a million other games where i can shoot people.
It can be used as a runway for all other developers to build on and launch new games off of, but that's all. Now what we need is a game with those graphics... but more to do.

The Baldur's Gate series. :D
Hardly underrated amongst genuine RPGers and still decently big, but really, let's be honest here... in the general picture, it's slipping into obscurity nowadays. It doesn't deserve to be forgotten considering its reputation.

Games that are under rated:
-General Chaos (GENESIS)
-Out of This World (SNES/GENESIS) (Also known as Another World)
-Super Star Wars (SNES)
-Gauntlet 4 (GENESIS/ARCADE)
-King of Dragons (SNES/ARCADE)
-Super Conflict (SNES)
-U.N. Squadron (SNES)
-Jet Force Gemini (N64)
-Doom 64 (N64)
-Star Control (PC/GENESIS)
-Rise of the Triad (PC)
-Strife (PC)
Of all the games I listed General Chaos is the best one ever. I can have HOURS and HOURS of fun with 2 or 4 people. One player is weird but 2 - 4 people is so much fun I don't know how to explain it. Try those games out ESPECIALLY General Chaos!

jesus christ, that game sucked. they dumbed the RTS genre down to the level that 8 year-olds could pick up the game and beat a military strategist.

Well they obviously played the game. Coming from someone whos been around a few major Crysis forum boards and just generally seen the overal media attention view, its obvious by people opinions that they are pre-judging, biased and really when it boils down to it jealous over what Crysis has achieved.

Shogun Total War, the whole Total War series in fact. With the exception of strategy gamers I don't think the series ever got the respect it deserved
Carmageddon(original) hundreds of hours of fun when I was a kid
General Chaos (sega genesis) simple RTS concept. I wish someone would do a flash version of this game, its perfect for flash

Meh, I adored the TW series until M2-TW came along, huge letdown..
It didn't have that "dark" edge that the original had and the aging of children going faster than the aging of adults and the incorrect timeflow vs. aging plus the inability to name an heir really killed the experience for me, it felt more like an average R:TW mod.

TES: Morrowind.
I wouldn't say underated as much as under hyped.
I never heard about it until I bought it and played it.
Oblivion had mass hype though.

I know what you mean, I got it from a random recommendation from a friend, then months later came across it in a bargin bin at Costco. Epic win, though I didn't know it yet.
Morrowind is better than Oblivion IMO they took alot of shit out and pussified the game somewhat.
