Is this just the beginning of what we're going to see at this summer's Olympics?

Stuff like that? No. But I don't blame people for protesting or even if they protest during the games. Olympics have always been like this with certain countries.

Oh I don't blame them either. China is a joke when it comes to human rights and we're a bunch of hypocrites for letting them get away with it. If we didn't import 2 gazillion dollars worth of junk from them, I'm sure our stance on them would be far different.

Disregard the troll, just above me.
China has a nine-hundred pound gorilla in the arena. How are they going to contend with it? The torch has been transformed into a beacon of inhumanity.
I don't blame those folk for trying to extinguish it. Keep the Olympics in a civilized community and exclude the Neanderthals. Remember the 1936 Olympics? Me, neither. But I've read my history books.

About 6 months ago my brother was telling me about a website from a guy who claimed to be from the future and had travelled back in time. He had apparently already predicted things that had happened in the past (terrorist attacks and the like), although there was no proof of when he made the predications. But I remember him telling me that one of his future predictions was that the Olympics wouldn't happen in 2008 or ever again in the future.
Does anyone know the website? I didn't pay much attention when he first told me but I would love to have a look now!

I'm with Sander, lets not forget what China did to us at Pearl Harbor.
Seriously, there is no coincidence that the riots in Tibet happen the same year the Olympics are in Beijing. I don't think the Olympics should be boycotted completely, but now that the attention will be on China it's a good time to shed light on some of the major problems over there.

China doesn't give a shit about these protestors, they are only hurting their own countries. Not to mention making complete fools out of themselves.

I can see why Tibetans are protesting, but do the westerners protesting have any clue what traditional Tibet was really like. Does Richard Gere have any clue that his Hollywood shangri la image of Tibet is pure bullshit
I'll give you an example, neighboring Nepal has a brutal caste system where slavery is still practiced. I was flipping around yesterday morning while I ate breakfast and caught a show called Now on PBS explaining this shit. Tibet was almost exactly like Nepal in this aspect, different religion but the same caste slavery system.
Slavery Nepal
An innovative program in Nepal is helping to free young girls that live as modern day slaves.
Unable to make ends meet, many families in western Nepal have been forced to sell their daughters, some as young as six, to work far from home as bonded servants in private homes. With living conditions entirely at the discretion of their employers, these girls seldom attend school and are sometimes forced into prostitution. http://www.pbs.org/now/shows/414/index.html

They hold the second largest amount of U.S. Debt outstanding that's guaranteed by the 'Full Faith and Credit' of the U.S. (whatever that's worth these days). If the Chinese ever decide to 'call the note,' the U.S. Government will be in deep do-do. It would precipitate an unprecedented 'run' on the U.S. dollar; Japan and Saudi Arabia would follow suit and demand payment in Gold, or Euros for their dollar holdings. In short, the International Monetary System might collapse.
This Scenario gives them leverage. If they want G.W. Bush to attend the Olympic Opening Ceremonies in Beijing, he's pretty much obliged to do so. I'm sure there's an or else clause included as an appendix to Bush's invitation

John Titor : Boycott of 2008 Beijing Olympics Begins
Titor said there would be no Olympics held in 2008.
Titor said that 2008 would be the year that the principle of time travel was first demonstrated to work inside the CERN Hadron Collider.
Titor said something would happen in 2012 so catastrophic that he could not describe it, something like the "parting of the red sea." NASA says that for the first time in recorded history, the solar field is in perfect perpendicular alignment with Earth for when it flips magnetically in December 2012. Nobody living has ever seen an event like that before. We're looking top down on a magnetic field that will flip violently in the one of the biggest solar maximums ever recorded in 2012. Even NASA is suggesting that the way that magnetic rip affects this planet is unforeseeable at this time but that we can expect it to be something apocalyptic in significance.
Titor suggested the President in 2008 will be female. The jury is still out on that one.
Lastly and most important of all - Titor said that three billion people will die in a nuclear war that starts in 2015, a first strike by the Russians that will annihilate the U.S. government and most of the urban population.

There are a few things that can happen. One is that the US could just reprint and devalue the dollar tremendously. That will destroy the world economy- seeing the biggest buyer not buy anymore. But that's if we want our credit to stand high. If there was a "run" on our banks and fed, with the help of the world bank we could probably renegotiate loans.
In the first place, we (USA) are NOT at war with China. Boycotting the opening ceremonies would do nothing other than piss off the Chinese and there are two billion of them...
If all you Liberal fuctards are so fucking upset about a country violating civil rights why aren't you all pitching a pussy fit about the fucking Iranians? And where were all of you when Badass Saddam was poisoning about a million plus Shiite Iraqis?

Boycotting the Olympics or the opening ceremonies would be foolish and pointless. The only thing that US and Soviet 1980 and 1984 boycotts did was strengthan the host nation's national pride by allowing them to win more medals.
The two most memorable political impacts of the Olympics were arguably Jesse Owens winning four golds in Hitler's Aryan paradise and Tommie Smith and John Carlos's black power salute in the 1968 games. Allowing the athletes full and complete access to the games is the only way to allow a strong political statement, which I am certain would come from some if not many quarters. Be it a free tibet sign during the opening procession or political statements from the medal podiums. If the goal is a political statement, the odds are better if everyone participates fully.

I agree 137% on that. I mean, just WTF do we have to gain by intentionally making the Chinaman mad? Slant eyes hold more of our paper than any other country in the world and we also buy a ton of 'lead' shit from them...
China is not a democratic society..never have been and probably never will be...but, Lord, I'll take China over them measly Tibetans any day of the week
Screw Tibet and screw hollywood...Long live capitalism! Let the games begin

So there you have it. Your attack is hit with a massive case of fail. Your people only pretend to be upset about Iranian civil rights because your radio hosts tell you to be upset. It's just a way to get us geared up for a war with them.

I said it before and I will say it again. Boycotting the Olympics will only create a us-vs-them mentality in China and does not have a positive effect on human rights. By choosing a path of confrontation, you risk putting many more liberal Chinese into the camps of communists because they will support their own country first. As far as they are concerned, the West rained on their parade and thus they are the enemy. If you are hoping they will question their government, it's having the opposite effect.
Are Iranians holding the Olympics?
No, but they will hold your not-so-olympic ballz and squeeze them if you don't wake up

She doesn't call for a full out boycott. Just for the opening cermonies. Most politicians here, I think, believe that a boycott is unfair to the athletes who have trained extremely hard to compete.

While I believe China has some work to do when it comes to human rights and what not, I agree that the athletes from all over the world who spend their lives training and dreaming about participating in the Olympics, only to watch self righteous people turn it into a political show to soothe themselves.

I think what ric was trying to say was that people only care about "human rights bullcrap" when something important is going on. What happened to Burman? Oh yeah we did alot there. All the west did was whine a little bit, get jack shit done, watch a cool Rambo movie, and then forget about it. Its just a fad that will come and go. Will Burma change when celebrities star on commercials speaking againist their regime? No. Will China change? NO. China would rather kill half of their population in Tibet just to keep it there. I'm almost positive the only reason people still care about Tibet is because of the Olympics. Countries kill their people. If all the West wants to do is a measely boycott (which would really* help our relations with China) and whine, then we should except the killings across the world to continue.

I am Jack's complete lack of surprise. I can't imagine the Olympic committee was so clueless that they didn't expect something like this when they chose China in the first place. I'm sure corruption and backdoor deals are part of the selection process.
It would have been interesting had they chosen a US city. We boycotted the 1980 Moscow games to protest the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. I wonder how many nations would have boycotted us to protest the invasion of Iraq.

some CANADIAN athletes will chose to boycott but not the government
some small countries nobody likes will boycott
At least 3 but less than 8 famous actors will call for a boycott
