I can't help but think we could spend a lot less on #1 if we spent more on #8.

Those of us who are aware of the world probably knew most of these. Still it's informative to break it down in such frank terms. How much did you pay income taxes last year....

#1 42.2 cents of each dollar paid goes to the Military
The biggest chunk of your money -- 42.2 cents of every income-tax dollar -- goes to fund the military. Over half of it, or 28.7 cents, goes to pay for the current war and military, 10 cents goes to interest payments on past and present military debt and 3.5 cents is allocated for Veterans' benefits. #2 22.1 cents -Health

The second largest amount is spent on health care initiatives, including Medicare. (Photo: AP)

#3 10.2 cents -non military debt Defecits don't matter? Who wouldn't like to see a 10% reduction in our income taxes...without giving up anything.

About ten cents of every federal tax dollar is spent on interest for non-military related national debt. (Photo: AP)

#4 8.7 cents per dollar - anti-poverty programs

These funds go to a variety of programs to help the underprivileged. They include food assistance, supplemental income for those with low incomes and assistance for foster care and adoption programs. (Photo: AP)

#5 4.4 cents, Education, training and social services
These funds go towards paying for elementary, secondary and higher education. Other beneficiaries include employment training centers. (Photo: AP)

#6 3.9 cents - Government and Law enforcement

This area covers a variety of programs, including the cost of running the justice system, the cost of running the Social Security program and federal employee retirement and disability. (Photo: AP)

#7 3.3 cents - Housing and community development

#8 2.6 cents - Enviornment, energy and the sciences

Spending in this area goes to environmental programs, energy exploration and any programs that deal with general science, technology and space. (Photo: AP)

#9 1.5 cents - Agriculture, commerce and transportation

#10 1 cent - International affairs
The smallest amount of your tax dollars goes to foreign affairs, including foreign humanitarian assistance, conduct of foreign affairs and international financial programs. (Photo: AP)

I'd be happy with any ratio if I knew each one did its job. Which very few do.

Alas that is not a option the US public will even consider.

That's a good idea: China and Russia are going to be a threat to the US soon, so cutting down military spending is exactly what we need right now.

Its weird to imagine that without this war we would have over a quarter of our budget available to goto something other than killing other people. Amazing.

No money should go to other countries because they hate us so they can go to hell

I'm terrified. We happen to have these cute little things called nuclear warheads. The concept is called M.A.D., might be worth the read.

You're worried about the 1% where if we took a less aggressive policy towards those other countries, and therefore they stopped hating us, we could save anywhere from 20%-40%?

Yes, I'm glad you're not in charge.

The united states spends more on the military than the rest of the world combined and 10 times more than china or russia... i think they could stand to reduce their spending at least a little bit...

Now that would just be reasonable, and we can't have that.

No. Clearly we spend exactly the right amount. If we spent any less the commies would destroy us instantly.

You're obviously a commie for NOT suggesting we spend MORE on the military. Get the commie pinko fag, boys, go on now!
