I am most definitely looking forward to some gameplay videos. This has great potential, and Relic rarely lets me down.

After numerous expansions to its Relic-founded Dawn of War license, THQ has confirmed that a medic has braved the field of battle and returned with the franchise's treasured gene seed, officially announcing Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II for the PC. While the game is not expected to drop until Spring 2009, THQ notes that players who pick up the current game's latest expansion, Soulstorm, will score themselves an invite to the sequel's upcoming multiplayer beta.

According to THQ, Dawn of War II will be built upon the Relic's proprietary Essence Engine 2.0, and will feature a fully co-operative multiplayer campaign. As for what races this latest chapter in the RTS series will offer up, we're left guessing, though the publisher has confirmed that the Space Marines and the Orkish green tides will be included. More information is promised in the near future, and as we get word from the Emperor, we'll let you know.

I recently got the latest expansion, about time that they gave us a sequel. One of the best rounded RTS out there, the sequel looks less cartoony.

Warhammer looks cartoony in itself. Soulstorm was a bit of a let-down.

Just have to say that I just got my PC Gamer with a big article on the game. I am now more stoked than I thought I would be.

They're adding a lot of RPG elements. In the campaign, you have this big Battle Barge for your base of operations, and you choose what missions to take and where to move to fight. You can buy abilities for the Barge which can help with missions on the ground, as well as special weapons for your marines (hammers that can have frost, fire, electric damage, etc).

Each soldier will move with you from mission to mission, and each will have his own name and his own voice in the squad, but they can die permanently. Reinforcements come in drop pods instead of just appearing in the squad.

It uses the Company of Heroes engine, so combat will be similar, and dramatically different from the original DoW. Units automatically move into cover and fire over it, and will get shred to pieces if they get caught in the open. Terrain is destructible. The article talks about a juggernaut that picks up an ork, throws him through another squad of orks, knocking some of them over and going through the wall, knocking it down. This game had better deliver, because with all the new screenshots in the article, it looks gritty as hell.

I'm pretty sure DoW and CoH always shared the same engine.

No, Dawn of War used IC+, the engine that Impossible Creatures used... Company of Heroes uses Essence

That's weird as fuck, I couldn't even tell a difference whatsoever, even the HUDs look the same.

The HUD doesn't mean shit about the engine.

I don't know, I don't remember much of the HUD from Dawn of War, but the engines themselves are extremely different... Down to the physics, shaders, and the overall feel.

Meh, I love Warhammer 40k but those models look too plastic to be badass

No kidding, but you have to think that if they decided to keep something as trivial as the HUD the same, that they wouldn't chuck the game on a new engine. With everything completely maxed, I see a slight difference in graphics. But when I fire artillery, the corpses seem to scatter the exact same way. I'm not debating that it's a different engine, I'm just saying it's odd.

I play both DoW:SS and CoH:OF and i can tell you CoH clearly has a way better physics engine.

Yeah, I see your point now. It's true that the engines do seem a bit alike.
