It's got one of steepest learning curves of any game out.

That and it sucks.

eves great. steep learnin curve and requires a bit of a commitment. 40,000 people on the same server at one time is a lil laggy but its fuckin epic compared to the other pre-teen ran shit thats out there

dont bother playing it if your sick of wow. i did the same and regret my time wasted.

dieing on WoW - lose a few minutes of work and pay a few gold
dieing in EVE - lose your expensive ship, all items your carrying, and waste time finding the stuff you need.

dont play it.

I recently started playing EVE, and I must say I like it. However it's not really WoW like. Not exactly a "fast action game".

The mission system is EXTREMELY boring. There are only a hand full of missions that keep returning all the time. But the missions is not really what the game is about. In the end the game is about economics/manufacturing and corporate power.

PvP is basically a tool to protect/destabilize other corporations...or you can become a pirate. As a pirate gang for example, it is totally possible to attack a convoy of goods (players transporting) and ask them money to let them live (heck you can even collect the money and blast them anyway).

But PvP is not all, you can specialize in transporting goods for other players, construct ships and equipment, play the stock market,...

Someone already mentioned "real loss". Meaning that if your ship gets destroyed, you loose it and have to buy a new one (which can cost a lot of in game money). In my opinion this adds a certain tension and charm to the game.

There is a lot to learn about that game, the learning curve is near vertical. But it's a very nice and open game world.

My advice is to just check it out in the free trial and see for yourself.

Eve Online is a niche game. If you love PvE, you'll hate Eve. If you love WoW, Diablo 2, and hate roguelikes and Shadowbane. You'll hate Eve.

If you love knowing that every action you make can have dire in-game consequences, and that you could go from the most powerful player on a server, to another player scraping whatever cash together they can, in a matter of 10 minutes... You'll love Eve.

Eve has the closest thing to permadeath out of all of the MMO's out there that I know of. The loss you feel when you die is quite tangible. Literally, months, or even years of playtime could go down the drain. There have been players that have experienced this, and players that have caused this.

Nothing like playing Eve, thinking you're getting somewhere after a week and up being absolutely raped by some pirates.

Start the process over, and end up raped again.

Alright, is it all on the ship and how is it an MMO? trading, community player interaction and can you see inside the ship and can you have friends come aboard and like man another gun or something of that nature

Sorry for repost!

Rogue is a half-hour journey if you can get that far. Shadowbane is terrible.

Rogue-likes are turn based. A single turn can be a half an hour.

Shadowbane is awesome, but it's also niche. If you don't enjoy the hardcore PvP, there's always other games that are void of PvP, or PvP-lite. And again, if you love PvE, than Shadowbane isn't for you.

SirWilliam-

I do know that there's some sort of skill system, but all the "leveling up" involves upgrading your spacecraft. The entire game revolves around the community, if you can't get into that, don't bother playing (and I mean, REALLY get into it, RP and stuff). And there's supposed to be some huge patch that includes some walking around on stations and stuff, but I don't know much about that. Every player has their own ship, even battlecruisers have a single player on them. Turrets are automated as far as I know.

Damn i love how you could play Jump to light Speed On Star Wars Galaxies like if your friend had a Millennium Falcon type of ship several people could take over the guns while one pilots and it was fantastic. That alas is what i was dreaming of...

Rogue-likes are turn based. A single turn can be a half an hour.

(I am basing this knowledge on Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer)

Monsters in rogue-likes move instantly after you. If I remember correctly, all rogue-likes have 30 levels, and once you can breeze through the first 20 in 15 or so minutes, you can typically do the rest of the game.

I know no one has beaten Nethack yet, but the time will come.

Mr.SelfDestruct
04-14-2008, 09:20 PM
You're telling me that you think nobody has figured out a way to beat Nethack in 21 years? Seriously?

No, there's definitely people that have beaten it. In fact, there's an official wiki with an entire page dedicated to those that have ascended under particular terms.

I know I've played several hours of IVAN without dying.

And all roguelikes are created differently. They can have different numbers of levels, although the most common is 100. Some don't even have levels, but various dungeons (IVAN).

Also, I want Shiren, looks awesome.

I've played several Roguelikes, but I wouldn't call myself an expert. I've definitely cut my teeth though.

ADOM
Nethack (and Falcon's Eye)
IVAN
Angband
DOOM the Roguelike
Zomband (lame)
Dwarf Fortress (AWESOME)
The Tombs (terrible for a roguelike, not bad for a flash based)

Van Hallen, lol. That reminded me of Val Hallen from that spoof of the Super Friends on Dexter's Laboratory.

Anyway, Eve is shit. Star Wars Galaxies was awesome but is now shittier than shit. I'm waiting for that independent project Infinity: Quest for Earth to be released (in 5 years). That game will be the ultimate space exploration MMO if made properly.

Earth and Beyond. The people that made Command and Conquer have also made the best MMO to date. When Westwood was let go though, they took that game offline. I was RIPSHIT.
