Child porn sentence suspended for ex-rabbi


BRIDGEPORT — A former West Haven rabbi and mental health counselor was given a suspended sentence today for possessing child pornography.

"I have great remorse and great sadness. I've accepted responsibility for my actions and I assure you, you will never see me in court again," Edward Schlaeger told Superior Court Judge George Thim.

"This conduct cannot be condoned," the judge retorted as he sentenced the 53-year-old former Trumbull resident to a five-year suspended term, followed by five years probation. He also ordered Schlaeger to register as a sex offender.

Until he pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography, Schlaeger had been the rabbi of Congregation Sinai in West Haven and was a clinical social worker for the state Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services at its Southwest Community Mental Health Center here.

His lawyer, John R. Gulash, told the judge his client has since converted to Christianity and has been attending a church in Trumbull. He said his client intends to relocate to Skokie, Ill.

Gulash also told the judge that his client has been undergoing counseling and will continue to do so.

According to Senior Assistant State's Attorney Howard Stein, Schlaeger's estranged wife, through her lawyer, in September 2005 handed over to the Bridgeport State's Attorneys office two compact discs she had discovered while cleaning the defendant's property out of their Trumbull home.

The discs, labeled with black marker "Fun Times"

and "Downloaded pics," contained 15 pornographic images.

Stein said one of the images was positively identified as that of a child from an investigation in Germany, another was an obvious pornographic image of a child and six others appeared to be images of children.

The prosecutor said police searched the Trumbull home and seized a milk crate containing a large collection of pornographic material along with a genital piercing kit.

Schlaeger's ex-wife also turned over to police his journal in which he described himself as suffering from a sexual addiction, the prosecutor said.

Police later seized a large amount of pornographic paraphernalia from the home in Shelton where Schlaeger subsequently moved, the prosecutor said.

But Stein told the judge that despite the "truckload" of pornographic material seized from the defendant, only two images from the CDs could definitely be determined to be child pornography. He said he agreed to the plea bargain because, under state law, it is a defense to the crime if a defendant has fewer than three images.

You know I can not help noticing that there is a huge lack of attention given to these incidents, I mean when a Catholic Priest commits a crime against clergy abuse it makes national headlines. Now don't get wrong here I'm not trying to single one faith out over another, I just can not help but notice a discrepancy.




And I won't be holding my breath to see this article make it on to Little Green Footballs either... as a fleeing abusive Rabbi with international warrants for his arrest won't make the site what will? of course as we all know if this guy was Muslim or a Hippie it would lead the days events. ;)

I suppose it's because Jewish Rabbi's don't do this type of crap very often, whereas Catholic priests put it in little boys poopers all the time so it has become a stereotype, so when a Rabbi does it it's a one-off (or two-off, in this case) but when a Catholic priest does it everybody's like "Oh look they're at it again... :rollseyes"

I've never personally ran into any Jews that were bad to me, but a friend of mine from New York has a lot. Orthodox Jews in particular, according to him, are always being caught for some kind of fraud. If my friend drives through their neighborhoods, the kids there throw rocks at his car. I've never heard of Muslims doing that kind of think, except maybe to an Israeli tank.

I was speaking about both incidents in concert hence the plurality of my comments in which the other Rabbi encouraged followers to force their children eat feces... thats rather lewd I believe.

i'm only responding to the post you made on this particular case of pedophilia, i didn't catch the story on kids eating...crap. (i'm glad i didn't)

but even so, those two cases (as horrible as they are, don't get me wrong) pale in comparison to the attrocities of catholic priests, which explains why they aren't exposed on the same level media-wise.

you found two examples of rabbi's doing terrible things, (there are more, i'm not trying to kid myself) and want to compare that with the hundreds of priests that have been proven to be abusers, and the 4,000 accused of abusing? is it really that strange?

look, i understand the point you're trying to make about the priests 'hogging' the spotlight as far as scandals are concerned, but you need to be careful what sites you're pulling your information from. i hope you don't align yourself with these jew-haters.

also, i noticed many of the people in that link were accused of pedophilia. the amount of catholic priests accused of pedophilia lies well into the thousands. roughly 4,000 actually, as i said earlier. it's still not even a close comparison. it's not even comparable number-wise. interestingly enough, a few of those cases didn't have anything to do with kids at all. guess they just decided to throw them in there for good measure. pretty dishonest if you ask me.

still terrible though. what's even more important than blaming these monsters is taking measures to help prevent it in the future. i think it should be legal for a priest to marry and have intercourse; it's just unnatural for a man to live a life of abstinence like this.

It's because we like to be told what we already knew. We know priests bugger little boys, so we want to see it happen on the news, we know Muslims blow themselves and other things up, so we like to see that on the news, but we don't all think Rabbis watch CP, so we don't put that in our headlines. Now, if we find a Rabbi being an extreme cheapskate, we'd definately consider it. If we were to find out that the person with the largest nose in the world was a Rabbi, he'd be all over CNN, but CP just doesn't fit the stereotypes.

hmm, that first link doesn't work for me and the second just contains a list of a bunch of rabbis who support the efforts of the awareness center. also, any link i click on the second page brings up a message saying "oops! page not found..." good for those rabbis, though. it seems the jewish clergy doesn't need the pressures of media attention in order to generate change.

constant supervision? it's sad to think we've come to this in church setting, but obviously there have been enough problems in the clergy to spawn suspicion and warrant what may have been construed as 'extreme measures' a few decades ago.
