View Full Version : How do you find you music?

I'm just curious about how people are finding music.
Are we all just listening to the same cookie cutter stuff that the record companies are serving to us?
For the most part, I do not like popular music. I like new and exciting groups and artist that are trying to stand out and not sound like everyone else. But these acts are to difficult to turn into a product so the record companies stay away from them.
What does the future of music hold for us?

You have to search for really good music now, because all the mainstream likes is repetitive "hip hop" and "rap." Occasionally, they'll also go for the latest feminine emo band.

Last.fm
It records what you listen to and suggests bands you might like.
I'd say 2/3 of my bands came from there

I usually goof around on MySpace, checking out the friends of bands I like.
My guitar teacher really got me into good music, though. Back when I used to worship Metallica, he forced me to buy "Rust in Peace." Then he got me heavily into Lamb of God, which I dedicated half a year to learning every song off of "Ashes of The Wake." Then he got me into Threat Signal and Meshuggah . . perfection.

I've tried Pandora and Last.fm they're ok at suggesting new stuff but they still don't stray to far from the mainstream. And they require me to do to much. I think that is part of my problem. I like to listen to unsigned artist. Stuff that is really away from the mainstream. But I don't want to have to spend hours searching for stuff. I've tried looking for stuff on MySpace but you could spend weeks looking there and be lucky if you find something more than the neighbors kids uploaded practice.
This is my new mission. To find a way to learn about new music without having to work at it.

I usually ask friends that have somewhat of a same taste as me recommend me some bands. But usually if I hear good stuff from about a band I'll check it out myself and determine whether or not I like it.

Read CD reviews, if you're into metal visit the Rate the song above you*Metal Edition* thread. I found a few bands i listen to frequently through there. Thanks
melodeathpwns for some of those. Also, check out tours. Bands always tour with others that you would probly enjoy.

Two sites:
http://www.progarchives.com/
http://allmusic.com/
I mostly use allmusic. I find an artist that I like and then look at the "Similar Artists" category.

Well there's your problem. People listen to the mainstream stuff BECAUSE they are mostly lazy and they don't have to work to find it.
To find the good stuff, you are just going to have to bite the bullet and do some digging, no other way to do it unless you have really good contacts or just get lucky.

i work as a music director to a radio station. it's a sweet set-up... bands and labels send you their releases for free in hopes that you will spin their album.

Myspace, sky.fm (http://www.sky.fm/), di.fm (http://www.di.fm/).
Youtube also. As much as I hate the cartoon Naruto, at least it's fans have made music videos for virtually every song from every album by every artist throughout the history of the world, which is actually quite useful.

wiki search a band/artist I like. Wiki usually has similar bands hyperlinked in the artical plus there are usually samples that you can listen to at the bottom of the article. Other than that theirs friends, forums, and itunes radio:p

Also Soundclick.com & Myspace.com are great for listening to stuff you can't find anywhere else.
I just Myspace surf. Everything they play on the radio today is garbage.
